DAILY LIFE

Each individual has their routine and habits, but it's interesting to see
how different cultures have different attitudes to things like: mealtimes,
work hours and bedtime.

In the UK people start work between half past eight and nine o'clock.

It is common to have a light breakfast of tea or coffee and toast or cereal

before they leave their house.

At eleven o'clock in the morning, many people have a ten minute break
for a cup of tea or coffee.

People usually have lunch between twelve and one o'clock. Most people
have forty-five minutes for their lunch break. They have a sandwich or
soup; it's not a big meal.

After work, the typical time to have dinner is between six and seven o'clock.

Dinner is the main meal of the day. After dinner people watch TV, go to the cinema, read, play sport
or do a different hobby.

Bedtime can be between half past ten and midnight.

HOME SWEET HOME

The houses in the United Kingdom usually have

two floors - we say 'upstairs' and 'downstairs'.
The kitchen, lounge and dining room are often
downstairs. The bedrooms and bathroom are
usually upstairs.

A bungalow is a house with one floor. A

detached house is independent. There are
terraced houses which are in a long line. It is
common to have a garden in front of or behind
the house. People have flowers or vegetables in
their gardens. In the summer people often cook
on a barbeque in the garden. They invite friends
and family and eat in the garden.

In the cities it is difficult to buy a house. They

are very expensive but don't usually have a
garden. In the cities people sometimes live in a
flat.

If you don't want to buy a house or flat, you can rent one. Rent is when you pay money to the person
who owns the house where you live. People like to live near where they work and have friends or
family.

HELPING AT HOME

A NEW STEAK HOUSE OPENS IN TOWN.

There is a new restaurant in town, "Bill and Bob's Steak House". The restaurant is in the High Street.
"B&B Steak House" serves thirty international dishes. English fish and chips and Greek salad are on
the menu, but their specialty is, of course, steak and chips. The owners are Bill Dakota and Bob
Samper. They are from America, but they live in England. They have seven restaurants in England,
Scotland and Wales.

Bill Dakota is a very good chef. He is famous in the United States for his Texas ham omelettes. We
want to know "Do you like to cook, Bill?" "I like to cook, but it is a lot of work. I start the day at half
past five in the morning and I don't go home until ten o'clock in the evening. I am in the kitchen all
day."

Yes, we can see that they work a lot. The food is excellent and the restaurant is beautiful.

TEA AND COFFEE

How to make a 'good' cup of tea and a 'bad' cup of coffee!

Tea is a very popular drink in the United Kingdom.

It is from India originally, but now it is the 'national'
drink of the United Kingdom. When British people
travel, they don't like the tea people drink in other
countries.

It is very easy to make:

- Boil some water. In the UK, people have a kettle

in their kitchen. It is electrical. It boils water quickly.
- Put some teabags in a teapot and then put the
boiling water on them.
- It is important to leave the tea for five minutes.
- Stir the tea with a teaspoon.
- Put cold milk in a tea cup. Pour the tea into the
cup.

Some people like sugar in their tea. People often

eat biscuits when they drink tea. Cups are small and
so often people drink from a big cup called a mug.

When people visit the UK, they often don't like the coffee because it is common to drink instant
coffee.
It has a lot of water and doesn't have a strong flavour.

Many British people don't like the taste of strong coffee like people drink in Italy, Spain, Greece and
Turkey.

Coffee is a popular drink in the morning break at work.

LAS VEGAS

Las Vegas is an internationally famous city located in the south of the state of Nevada. There are
about 558,400 inhabitants in Las Vegas. The city is about 340 square kilometers. Las Vegas is very
hot in the summer and the winters are mild. In summer, temperatures usually are as high as 40-
43°C. On rare days, temperatures can go as high as 47°C. For this reason, all casinos and hotels are
air conditioned. Some hotels even connect with each other by underground tunnels with air
conditioning.

Many people call Las Vegas the "sin city". This is because the city has anything and everything that
can be considered "bad". Gambling in casinos, a lot of alcohol, strip clubs, bars, discotheques, etc.
There are a million ways to spend money. Las Vegas is full of greed.

Las Vegas was very popular for gangsters and mafia in the 1950s and 1960s. There were many illegal
activities back then. That is probably why people still call Las Vegas the "sin city".

Other people call it "the marriage capital of the world". This is because almost every hotel/casino
has a wedding chapel inside. Many young couples enjoy the adventure and spontaneity of a Las
Vegas wedding.

A couple needs just a few moments to prepare a marriage! You can have an Elvis look-alike perform
the ceremony!

FOOD

One of the most typical English meals is fish and chips. It is common to find a 'Chippie' (chip shop)
on a main street.

People buy fish and chips (usually with salt and vinegar) and take it home to eat. This kind of food is
called 'takeaway' because you take it away. It is delicious, but not very healthy because it is fried
like the traditional English breakfast.

It is easy to find food from countries such as: India, Greece, Turkey and China. English people usually
like to eat in a restaurant for birthdays or to celebrate.

There are typical foods in each area of the UK. In Cornwall, you can try a pasty (meat and vegetables
in a pie) for lunch and in Devon you can eat a Cream Tea (cakes with strawberry jam and cream) in
the late afternoon.

You can try bangers (sausages) and mash (potatoes) or a typical roast dinner (meat and potatoes
with vegetables).

Supermarkets sell a big selection of international products, healthy foods and vegetarian food.
People often buy everything in the supermarket: bread, milk, vegetables and fruit.
