Module 1: Nature and Purposes of Assessment

A. Self assessment Questions:

1. Explain how you can monitor the students’ progress in the classroom.

As a future teacher, one of my ways for tracking student progress is to create individual
learning plans. The first step is to establish the learners' needs, which can be done by meeting
with each student and addressing course requirements as well as individual problems and needs.
Also, I encourage the learner establish a diary since it will assist the learner keep track of where
they are in terms of reaching stated deadlines and course objectives. Also, describe the course
objectives/outcomes to them because they will learn what they need to know and how it will be
accomplished throughout the course. Finally, inform students about the formal assessment
standards.

2. Cite situations where a teacher conducts Testing in classroom teaching Evaluation, Assessment,
Measurement and Testing in classroom teaching.
An individual teacher must conduct a classroom teaching assessment in his/her own subject area
for individual file purposes on his/her grade level.
B. Self-assessment Questions:
1. Why is it necessary to conduct assessment on a regular basis?
Assessment is an important part of instruction because it determines whether or not the educational goals
are being met. It is therefore necessary to conduct assessments on a regular basis. Grades, placement,
advancement, instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some situations, financing are all influenced by
assessment. It is also the way to test the individual child that they are studying , they are aware of their
subject matter, for example short quiz before the class discussion.
2. How can assessment be a source of motivation for the students?
Assessment can be motivating since it allows students to evaluate and estimate their abilities in
order to determine their strengths and weaknesses in their learning habits. It also encourages students to
keep track of their own development, as being able to observe their progress toward various academic
goals may be a powerful motivator. Consider having each student keep a record of their assessment
results over the course of the grading period. This provides students with a constant visual representation
of their assessment results to date, which can aid them in recognizing the steps they need to take to
enhance their performance in the future.
3. Is there a demarcation in the approaches of the assessment (assessment as, of and for learning)?
Explain your answer.
It does have demarcation. The distinction between assessment of learning and assessment for learning is a
function and purpose–a question of ‘who': assessment of learning is a method to observe what students
can do, whereas assessment for learning is a way to see what teachers should do in response.
C. Self-assessment Questions:
1. Cite the importance of integrating the principles of assessment in monitoring the progress of the
students.
Integrating assessment is important since it aids students in their learning. When students can see how
they're doing in class, they can figure out whether or not they're understanding what they're studying.
Finally, it can assist students in becoming more motivated.
2. Discuss the instances where a teacher uses classroom assessment as placement, formative, summative
and diagnostic.
Diagnostic evaluation is a misnomer because it usually refers to "assessment" rather than "evaluation."
This relates to the evaluation of individuals, most commonly pupils. To learn more about a student's
abilities and/or knowledge, a diagnostic test would be employed. It may be a "pre-test" to assess if they
were ready to start a course or unit of study. It could also be used in the admissions process.
Formative evaluation would check something's "value" as it was being used or implemented. For
example, if a new teaching method is being trialed, the instructor will want to know how successful it is
as quickly as feasible before implementing it across the entire program/course. Teachers frequently
employ formative evaluation at the conclusion of particular lessons, when they ask students for input on
the session. The benefit of formative evaluation is that if there is negative feedback regarding, say, a
particular lecture or topic area, it can be modified right away, rather than waiting until the conclusion of
the course to perform summative evaluation, when the ‘damage' has already occurred.

Summative evaluation occurs at the end of a course in education. Completely evaluating all
units/modules/subjects, as well as teaching and learning, as well as how the course is presented and
administered, are examples. Summative evaluation frequently leads to the creation of an annual report
that highlights the program's strengths and limitations, as well as what needs to be improved.
3. Differentiate between norm reference and criterion reference assessment.
Norm reference tests are calculated by comparing the results to those of their peers. Norm-
referenced assessments can be used to assess the acquisition of skills and knowledge from a variety of
sources, including notes, texts, and syllabi. Criteria reference tests, on the other hand, are unaffected by
peer performance. Criterion-referenced assessments assess how well students understand specific
concepts and are frequently utilized in a pre-test/post-test arrangement..
