CHARACTERISTICS
 The method emphasizes the autonomy of the learner; the teacher's role is to monitor
the students' efforts
 Pronunciation is seen as fundamental.
 The Silent Way uses a structural syllabus, and structures are constantly reviewed
and recycled.
 Translation and repetition are avoided and the language is usually practiced in
meaningful contexts.
 Evaluation is carried out by observation, and the teacher may never set a formal test.
STRENGTHS
 Raises the participation of the students in class.

 The self-esteem of the students will be increased and this will enhance learning.

 It increases individual extraordinary cognitive powers.


WEAKNESSES
 This method can be benefited by the teacher only in small groups of students.
 Teachers must know their teaching objectives clearly and make use of the teaching
aids effectively.
 Students may be confused with the symbols of the colored wooden rods.
 Students waste too much time struggling with a concept that would be easily
clarified by the teachers’ direct guide.
 It is difficult for teachers to evaluate students’ progress in their learning process.
