Η Αγγλικη γλωσσα εχει δυο ειδων αρθρα: το αοριστο (a / an-


ενας, μια, ένα) και το οριστικο (the - ο, η, το, η, της, την, το,
του, το, οι, των, τους, οι, των, τις, τα, των, τα)
1. Χρηση του οριστικου αρθρου:
Α) δεν χρησιμοποιειται με γενικες εννοιες (before nouns which
are used with a general sense, ουσιαστικα που δηλωνουν υλη,
αφηρημενα η κοινα ουσιαστικα)
Wine is a drink, not a refreshment
Love is a mystery
I love pizza
He grows wheat
Beauty is only skin deep
- Όταν όμως αναφερομαστε σε συγκεκριμενο ουσιαστικο η
συγκεκριμενα ουσιαστικα, τοτε το οριστικο αρθρο
χρησιμοποιειται
She is the love of my life
The pizza we ordered last night came from a new pizza place
The wheat we grew last year was of an excellent quality

- Όταν ένα ουσιαστικο επαναλαμβανεται στον λογο


θεωρειται ορισμενο και παιρνει το οριστικο αρθρο
He bought some history and sociology books; the history books
are over there on the table. I don’t know where he put the
sociology ones.
Β) Το οριστικο αρθρο ΔΕΝ χρησιμοποιειται πριν από κυρια
ονοματα προσωπων, πολεων και κωμοπολεων, χωριων, χωρων
και οδων
Jim is very tall
Mrs. Jones is a clever lady
Paris is the capital of France
His office is in Oxford street.
Exceptions 1: the USA, the Congo, the Sudan, the Midlands, the
Netherlands, the Philippines, the Yemen, the Lebanon, the
Levant

Exceptions 2:
- The Oxford Street in Birmingham, with its industrial
buildings, is quite different from the Oxford Street in
London.
- There is also a small village in England where the high
street is actually called "The Street", so there is a postal
address is "4, The Street" (a "high street" is the main road
usually in a village or small town. High Street is a
common name for streets and roads)
- [In the English town of Yeovil there is a road officially
called "Preston Road". But it is very often referred to as
"the Preston Road" because it was the originally the road
leading from Yeovil to the neighbouring village of Preston
Plucknett. And in an English city, "Cheltenham Road" is
referred to as "the Cheltenham Road" because it's the road
that leads to Cheltenham].

- Strand (or the Strand) is a major thoroughfare in the City


of Westminster, Central London. It runs just over 3 ⁄ 4 mile
(1,200 m) from Trafalgar Square eastwards to Temple Bar,
where the road becomes Fleet Street inside the City of
London, and is part of the A4, a main road running west
from inner London.

In some parts of the United States and Canada the definite


article is used with the names of highways that are made up of
numbers only.
- Do not use the definite article with the names of streets,
avenues, lanes, roads, boulevards [λεωφοροι], squares,
ways, circuses
Oxford street, Trafalgar Square, The Great Lakes, The Mall (= a
street in London)
The Royal Ontario Museum is on Bloor Street.
Jill lives on Summerside Avenue.
Meet me on Santa Monica Boulevard at 7:00.

- Use the definite article with the names of highways,


parkways [οδος ταχειας κυκλοφοριας], freeways
[αυτοκινητοδρομοι], expressways [αυτοκινητοδρομοι],
and turnpikes [= toll road – δρομος ταχειας κυκλοφοριας
με διοδια]. (Sometimes the is not used, but the use of the
definite article seems to be more common)

It is much faster driving on the Glendale Freeway.


The Metropolitan Expressway is owned and operated by a
private company.
The Lincoln Highway is famous for being the first road to cross
the entire United States.
- Do not use the definite article with the names of highways
that begin with a word or letter followed by a number.

There is a speed trap on Highway 52.


U.S. Route 101 runs through California, Oregon, and
Washington.
You can get to the hotel by driving along Interstate 45.
Route 66 is very famous – it runs from Chicago to LA.

The 401 always has traffic.


The 99 is a pleasant drive.
David’s car broke down on the 5.

Ε) Το οριστικο αρθρο ΔΕΝ μπαινει μπροστα από τα παρακατω


ουσιαστικα, όταν αυτά χρησιμοποιουνται για τον σκοπο που
δημιουργηθηκαν (for their primary purpose)
Barracks, bed, church, court, desk, harbour / port, home,
hospital, market, prison / jail, school, college, university, table,
sea, work.
Pupils go to primary school to learn
Parents often come to the school to talk to the teaching staff
He was taken to hospital; we went to the hospital to see how he
was
He was taken to prison
Lawyers often go to the prison to see their clients

ΣΤ) Τα ουσιαστικα cinema, movies, pictures και theatre


παιρνουν το οριστικο αρθρο
They often go to the cinema / movies / pictures / theatre

Z) Τα ουσιασικα που δηλωνουν κτηρια, πραγματα κλπ που


θεωρουνται μοναδικα στον κοσμο παιρνουν το οριστικο αρθρο
και συνηθως αρχιζουν με κεφαλαιο γραμμα.
The Sun / Moon / Earth / sky / Pope / Bible / gospel (the Good
News) / Parthenon / Pyramids / Taj Mahal etc.
Τα σημεια του οριζοντα δεν παιρνουν το οριστικο αρθρο όταν
φανερωνουν διευθυνση

H) Με τα κτητικα επιθετα δεν μπαινει το οριστικο αρθρο


Her accessories (τα αξεσουαρ της)
Θ) Δεν χρησιμοποιειται το οριστικο αρθρο με τα ουσιαστικα
mother, father, uncle, aunt, cousin, etc., όταν αναφερομαστε
στην δικη μας μητερα κλπ

Επισης με τα ουσιαστικα man (οι ανθρωποι γενικα / ο

Ι) Τα επιθετα next και last δεν παιρνουν το οριστικο αρθρο όταν


αναφερονται σε χρονο αμεσως πριν η μετα τον παροντα χρονο
(το ‘τωρα’)

They went to China last year

Όταν όμως αναφερονται σε χρονο πριν η ετα άλλο χρονικο


σημειο του παρελθοντος η του μελλοντος, κι όχι του παροντος,
παιρνουν το οριστικο αρθρο

She was in New York last Monday; the next (following) day she
visited Boston.
He was very happy on the last day of his life
He wants to spend the last day of his holiday by the hotel’s
swimming-pool

K) Πολλα επιθετα χρησιμοποιουνται ως ουσιαστικα στον


πληθυντικο αριθμο με το οριστικο αρθρο και χωρις -s,
δηλωνοντας ολοκληρη την κατηγορια των ανθρωπων που
χαρακτηριζονται από την εννοια του επιθετου

The elderly – οι ηλικιωμενοι


The young – οι νεοι
The poor - φτωχοι
The rich – οι πλουσιοι

NOTE:
Breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper
We have dinner at 9 pm
The dinner we had at the Ritz was fantastic

- Το οριστικο αρθρο χρησιμοποιειται με ένα κοινο

- Before means of transport
Travel by car
But: Catch the / a train
The plane finally took off

- Before titles, if after them the name of the person follows
King Richard, Presiden Kennedy but: The President of the USA
- before two-word names, if the first word is usually the
name of a person or place

2. Χρηση του αοριστου αρθρου


Το αοριστο αρθρο στα Αγγλικα εχει δυο τυπους, a, an για όλα
τα γενη. Χρησιμοποιειται μονο στον ενικο. Στον πληθυντικο
χρησιμοποιουνται τα some / any.
Ο τυπος a χρησημοποιειται όταν η επομενη λεξη αρχιζει αρχιζει
με ηχο συμφωνου
A house, a car, a book, a frog, a union
Ο τυπος an χρησημοποιειται όταν η επομενη λεξη αρχιζει
αρχιζει με ηχο φωνηεντος
An apple, an hour, an eighty-year old building
The Indefinite article ‘a’ remains as it is (i.e., it is not changed
into ‘an’) before the word ‘one’
She attended a one month course at Cambridge
To αοριστο αρθρο δεν χρησιμοποιειται μπροστα από μη
μετρησιμα ουσιαστικα, αφηρημενα ουσιαστικα και γευματα,
εκτος εάν εχουν επιθετο μπροστα τους
We’ll have dinner at 10 pm
We had an expensive dinner at the Hilton
The indefinite article is placed after adjectives, if before them
there is one of the words: too, as, how,however.
She is too good a woman to commit a crime
He is too old a man to run a marathon

We use ‘a / an’ to talk about something for the first time. We


use ‘the’ to talk about something we have mentioned before
There is a dog in the garden. The dog is near the swimming pool

d) Μετα το βοηθητικο ρημα ‘to be’ χρησιμοποιειται παντοτε
το αοριστο αρθρο όταν ακολουθει ουσιαστικο ενικου
αριθου που μπορει να αριθμηθει (μετρησιμο ουσιαστικο –
countable noun)
Το ιδιο συμβαινει και με το ρημα ‘to have’
I am a teacher
I have a car
e) before a singular countable noun (a man)
f) before names of professions (she is an actress)
g) in certain expressions
a lot of, a great deal of, a hundred, a dozen, a million, a score
[μια εικοσαδα], six kilometers an hour, a quarter, a thousand, a
couple, to be of a size, to be of an age
h) after the verb ‘call’
they called her a thief
i) after phrases introduced with the prepositions ‘for’ and
‘as’
For a driver, he is not that bad
As a lawyer, he failed
