THE
FATHER
OF
BLACK
HISTORY
MONTH
CARTER G. WOODSON

Carter G. Woodson was a notable African American scholar,

historian, author, and educator. On February 7, 1926, Woodson
initiated the first celebration of African American history: "Negro
History Week." In the year 1976, President Gerald Ford initiated
an official recognition of Black History Month. This celebration
would become a month-long observence, hence the name "Black
History Month."
Fun Fact: February was chosen for Black History
Month as Fredrick Douglass and Abraham
Lincoln both have birthdays within the month.

Fun Fact: Two countries observe Black History

Month in October rather than February: Ireland
and the United Kingdom. Countries that
celebrate during February include Canada,
Germany, and the Netherlands.

Fun Fact: Rosa Parks was not the first African

American to refuse to move seats on a
Montgomery bus line. Fifteen-year-old
Claudette Colvin had refused to relinquish her
seat just 9 months prior.
BLACK INVENTORS
Lewis Latimer is most known for his
evaporative air conditioner, carbon
filaments for light bulbs, and toilet
systems for railroad cars.

Osbourn Dorsey was an African

American man who invented both
the doorknob and doorstop in
1878.

Miles Alexander was an African

American inventor known for
patenting automatically opening and
closing elevator doors.

THE HISTORY OF
JUNETEENTH
Juneteenth, also called Emancipation Day or Freedom
Day, is a holiday celebrated by African Americans. It
commemorates the day in which Galveston, TX slaves
learned of their freedom.

Many Black Americans still celebrate Juneteenth

today. Parades and festivals are held every year to
celebrate independence and freedom.

In 1866, former slaves combined the words 'June' and

'nineteenth,' creating the name Juneteenth.
Former slave, Nathan
"Nearest" Green, born 1820
in Tennessee is regarded as
the first known African
American master distiller.
He is credited for teaching
Jack Daniel the whiskey
techniques used in Jack
Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey. Uncle Nearest, as he was called
by family and friends, taught Daniel the Lincoln County
Process, which turns bourbon to Tennessee whiskey. When
Jack Daniel opened his distillery in 1866, he appointed Green
as his master distiller. In 2017, Uncle Nearest Premium
Whiskey was founded in honor of Green and was the most
awarded American Whiskey or Bourbon of 2019 and 2020.
