Dodgeball is a team sport in The Game
which players on two teams try Nature and Concept
to throw balls and hit
opponents, while avoiding being
hit themselves. The objective of
each team is to eliminate all
members of the opposing team
by hitting them with thrown
balls, catching a ball thrown by
an opponent, or inducing an
opponent to commit a violation,
such as stepping outside the
court.
The Game - Nature and Concept
The sport is played informally (in
schools and pick-up games) under
varying rules; and formally as an
international sport, under rules that
vary among international governing
bodies, such as the World Dodgeball
Federation (WDBF) and the World
Dodgeball Association (WDA). USA
Dodgeball is the governing entity for
dodgeball in the United States, with
member leagues and clubs across the
nation. International dodgeball day is
April 27.
Formed as a committee of
federations, the WDBF
drafted its first mandate
July 20, 2011 and its first
ruleset to regulate
competition on August 10,
2011. The first WDBF
headquarters were based
out of Los Angeles.

Dodgeball was originally
History played in Africa over two
of hundred years ago, but instead
of the fun & exciting game that
Dodgeball it is today, it was in fact a
deadly game. Instead of using
soft, rubber balls, the game
was actually played with large
rocks and it was used as an
intense work-out for the tribes,
where each competitor would
attempt to hit their opponent
with the rock to injure or
incapacitate them.
Once a player was hit, they
would attempt to be pelted by
further rocks to finish them off.
It would be the responsibility of
the teammates of the fallen
competitor to try and defend
him and force the attackers off
with their own rocks. This
would said to be a great way to
encourage the tribesman to
work together during
skirmishes against other tribes,
working to take out the weak
and protect their own.
A missionary, by the name of Dr.
James H. Carlisle saw what was
happening and was intrigued by
the agility and ruthlessness of the
tribal men , as well as the solidarity
and heart they were showing. He
spent many hours watching the
men, and became infatuated with
the ritual that he saw on a daily
basis. When he made his way back
to England, via Europe, he showed
some of his pupils what he had
seen.
The European men that tried
what Carlisle was telling them St. Mary’s College in Norfolk,
found they didn’t have the natural England
agility or accuracy to dodge or
throw, and with Dr. Carlisle
continuously moving on, he was
not able to encourage the people
he spoke to about the sport to
carry it on. It was only when he
returned to his teachings at St.
Mary’s College in Norfolk, that he
was able to transform the vicious
training in to an all-inclusive
game.
Dr James H. Carlisle

He changed the rock and petrified matter for a

leather ball, which was still hard but not
dangerously so. The sport was played on an
open field with no restrictions as to where
players were able to go, and was played as if a
game of chess or war, with players moving
strategically to try and trap an opponent.
A player was only out
from the game when they
were knocked to the floor
by the continuous blows
of the ball. Players would
look to bat the ball away
with their hands, in an
effort to deflect the power
away from them. This
was played for the next
century in much the same
way, with only minor
variations.
In 1884, St. Mary’s College played host
to a number of their colleagues from
Yale University. Included within that
party was Phillip Ferguson. Philip
Ferguson is generally regarded as the
person most responsible for taking
dodgeball over to America and
popularising it. He saw the boys of St.
Mary’s College playing and he hit upon
an idea for the game that would make it
quicker and faster. He brought in the
idea of playing within a set area, with
teams on either side of the pitch.
Once the sport made it back across
the pond to America, it was there that
the details of the sport we know
today were fleshed out. 1905 saw the
first official rules drawn up, which
included the rules regarding players
coming in after a catch and being hit
once and you were out. With the
colleges across America playing
each other, it enabled the sport to
spread like wildfire. News of this
emerging sport made its way back to
England, and the American
popularised rules became the norm
for which all dodgeball matches were
played.
Schools up and down the country would play for fun, but it was the film of the sport in
2004 that brought the whole world’s attention to the sport. The only place that the original
sport is played is St. Mary’s College, when they host their Yale brethren for a match,
every 4 years, to honour the founding fathers of the sport, and the African innovators.
Facilities & Equipment in Dodgeball
Dodgeball Bench The benches used in Dodgeball are
usually standard metal benches
found in youth sporting events.
Dodgeball benches are generally
large enough to fit all players on a
team, although there are usually are
no exact specified dimensions.
Dodgeball benches serve as the
location of “jail” when a player is out
via either catch or being hit. One
player may exit the bench and
return to play whenever a teammate
catches a ball thrown by the other
team.
In Dodgeball, cones are often used
to mark off lines and boundaries of Dodgeball Cones
the playing area. It is common to
see cones lined-up in the middle of
the court, at corners or along
sidelines. This is especially true for
dodgeball games at outdoor
locations since there may not be
defined lines for boundaries in,
sayan empty field. The cones used
in Dodgeball are generally smaller
than traffic cones, for example, but
the size of these varies by
availability.
DodgeBalls
There are many different ball types
used around the world, including
Rubber Ball
8.5-inch rubber, "no-sting" rubber, foam
and cloth. USA Dodgeball uses all ball
types across multiple tournaments held
by them and their member
organizations. The World Dodgeball
Federation uses primarily foam for their
World Championships with plans to
include cloth in the coming years, as
those are the two balls used most
widely across the world.
The WDBF specifies the use of 6 balls with six
players per side for their World Championships.
Foam Ball Various rule sets governing number of balls and
players are used around the world depending on
the court size, level of play, and the
organization's discretion.
The WDA specifies the use of five balls; certain
national rule sets, such as in Austria, specify
six.Amateur games typically use from three to ten
Cloth Ball
balls, the number tailored to the size of the court
and the number of players. More balls generally
adds to the amount of action in a game, but can
result in stalemate with many blocks. If there are too
few balls, the element of stealth is removed, as
players can see all the balls that might hit them.
Dodgeball Playing Court
Dodgeball can be played on any surface that has clearly marked boundaries and
a center line, such as a basketball or volleyball court or fenced area.
Games can also be played outdoors on a soccer pitch or football field. The
WDBF organizes games on beaches and USA Dodgeball hosts tournaments at
trampoline parks.
Elite Dodgeball specifies a court 50 feet (15 m) by 25 feet (7.6 m), where a zone
10 feet (3.0 m) wide at the junction of the areas is a neutral zone.
Indoor games played on Basketballor
Futsal courts do not often include court
Dodgeball Floor Tape lines and marking to specific Dodgeball.
Since it is more of a recreational sport.
Dodgeball courts are often marked using
tape.Floor tape is usually kept and
applied by a PE Teacher or Game
Official. This is usually non-marking,
easily removable tape such as masking
tape.
While Knee-Pads are not generally
Dodgeball required part of Dodgeball uniforms, they
can serve as an important purpose on
Knee Pads the court. Dodgeball is a game of quick,
unpredictable movements. Players have
to launch themselves out of harm’s way
constantly to stay in the game. This
means hitting the floor a lot. Which
means it can easily damage a player’s
kness.
Dodgeball Sneakers
Having quality Dodgeball sneakers is crucial for players who must be able to grip
the floor and move in any direction quickly. Players are often asked to wear
non-marking, rubber soled shoes in order to preserve the court they play on.
Dodgeball Uniform
D
In dodgeball, uniforms are used to
distinguish teams from one another and
display unity. One of the great features
of dodgeball though, is that uniforms
aren’t really needed if you don’t have
any. Players staying on their respective
sides ensures there is a clear separation
between the two teams even without
uniforms. Uniform rules and regulations
are different for every league. But
general rules are that every member of
the team must be in uniform.
