4. READING
When we read, an array of mental processes is at work: perception, recognition, activation, and comprehension.
Many times, we can’t easily understand texts because we lack previous knowledge about the ideas discussed in
them. More often than not, we even have problems understanding some words, especially in a foreign language.
That’s why you should always keep in mind some questions every time you approach a text:
- How much do I know about the field of the text?
- What is the purpose of the text?
- Who will be the potential readers/audience?
- What linguistic resources has the author used to convey his/her meanings?

1. Look at the photos and the titles of the photos A-D. What do you think the texts are about?

Pictures are the paratext and as such, it is full of meanings. Remember that you can observe the
pictures and scan through the title and subtitles to infer what the general topic of the text is.
