5. SPEAKING

Speaking is challenging and requires a lot of preparation! In this unit, you will go on working on different
strategies to generate ideas, organize them and speak them out in order to improve your skills!

Follow the steps to get organized!

STEP 1: ACTIVATING PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE AND CAREFULLY OBSERVING THE PICTURES

- You will observe the set of pictures at hand and read the task carefully.
- You will think of previous houses and homes you have been to, stayed at, visited, lived in or
rented.
- You will recover words and phrases connected to these previous experiences
- You will list the lexico-grammatical sources (words, phrases and sentences) you have
remembered and highlight/circle the ones connected with the task.
- You will find similarities and differences between the two pictures and organize them in a Venn
diagram:

STEP 2: LISTENING TO OTHER SPEAKERS’ PERFORMANCE ON THE SAME TASK

Once you have fully observed the pictures and organized a set of expressions, you can listen to speaking
models of the task you are expected to do. In so doing, you can identify strategies other speakers use to
perform their tasks, reorganise your ideas and plan your own speech for our next Live Speaking Session!

Now, we’re going to listen to a student who is comparing and contrasting photos of living accommodation
and saying which he would prefer to live in.

WHAT'S YOUR CHALLENGE FOR UNIT 4?

This week, we are going to describe photographs, compare and contrast them and express our
wishes about different situations related to housing. Follow the steps in order to prepare for the next LIVE
SPEAKING SESSION!

b. Pay a careful look at the sets of pictures and choose one to describe. Prepare a 45 second-
presentation describing it. Use the following questions as a guide:

your presentation a straightforward, clear, easy-to-follow structure.

➢ Use a variety of lexico-grammatical sources. Remember that you have studied descriptive
vocabulary and verb patterns combined with nouns and adjectives related to houses and homes
in this unit. You can revisit the vocabulary section in order to find the tools to describe!
