RECAP

We have learned that pronouns are substitutes for nouns or noun

phrases to avoid repeating the same nouns.

Reflexive pronoun reflects the subject of the sentence which tells us

that whoever acts (subject) in a sentence is also the one receiving the action
(object). On the other hand, an intensive pronoun emphasizes a preceding
noun or the noun before it. It looks the same as reflexive pronouns. It can be
removed in the sentence without changing the thought of a statement.
LESSON

The emphasis in writing is important not only to create variety and

maintain interest but also to help readers easily get the main points from
what you are trying to say.

This lesson can be applied whether you are writing a text or when you
are speaking your mind.

Emphasize (v.) - means to give special attention

Here are some of the words and expressions you can use to emphasize
your point:

1. Identical pairs
This expression is used when one word is repeated twice to emphasize
what you are trying to say.

Examples of identical pairs are:

 over and over
 round and round
 again and again
 little by little
 word for word

When used in a sentence, it should sound something like this:

 She copied my essay word for word.

 All in all, I think you should buy a house.
 I’ve told you, again and again, don’t turn up the heat.
2. Coordination and Subordination
There are two (2) simple rules you need to follow in doing this
technique:

1) Use Coordination for Equal Ideas

Coordination means combining sentences or sentence parts
with equal ideas using coordinating conjunctions such as and, or,
so, and but, conjunctive adverbs such as however, therefore, hence,
and nevertheless, transitional phrases such as on the other hand, for
example, and/or in addition to or if your sentences are closely related
just simply make use of semicolons (;) (that looks like a comma, with a
dot on top).

When used in a sentence, it should sound something like this:

 He talked to me yesterday, but he didn’t mention the movie.

(Coordinating Conjunction)
 You’re the best person I know; however, I don’t know a lot of
people. (Conjunctive Adverbs)
 He arrives late almost every day; on the other hand, he works
quite late, as well. (Transitional Phrase)
 Jan started playing fifteen years ago; she was only five.
(Semicolon)

2) Use Subordination for Unequal Ideas

Subordination means combining two ideas that are not equal. In
this case, you might combine a sentence and a clause. These are often
introduced by subordinating conjunctions such as although,
furthermore, unless, because, though, if, and so forth. Sometimes, you
can also use relative pronouns such as that, which, and who)

When used in a sentence, it should sound something like this:

 He said that the party would be on Saturday, though I’m not
sure what time it starts. (Subordinating Conjunctions)
 We will go in August, which is the best time to be there.
(Relative Pronoun)

Now, let’s proceed to the third way you can use to emphasize your
point.

3. Sentence Structure
In addition to using coordination and subordination, sentence
structure can also help you in putting more emphasis. In sentence
structure, you can use Parallelism, Short Sentences, Word Choice, and
Repetition.

1) Parallelism – means using grammatically similar phrases together.

Example:
Last year was fantastic: I graduated from college, moved out of my
parents’ place, got my first job, and married my beautiful wife.

In this sentence, the subject graduated from college, which can

also be identified similar to having a first job. Can you see why it is
called parallel?

2) Short sentences – instead of using long complicated sentences, try

using a simpler approach.

Example:
Instead of saying, ―Get to the point as quickly as possible.‖, you can
just say, ―Get to the point.‖.

3) Word choice – careful word choice is one of the best ways since
this automatically enhances clarity in your sentence.
Example:
Instead of saying, ―I sprayed the ants in their private places.‖, a
better choice would be, ―I sprayed the ants in their hiding places.‖.

See the difference that just made?

4) Repetition - this can be very effective in building up an image into

your reader’s mind as long as you don’t overuse it.

Example:
Strangers aren’t always the people in another country; sometimes
they are the people next door. Strangers aren’t always somewhere
out there; sometimes they’re the people in your home. A stranger
isn’t always someone else— sometimes he’s the person in your
soul.
