For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the English 7 - Self-Learning Module on Using Prepositions when

EXPECTATIONS

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 7. All the

activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand: Using
Prepositions when Giving Instructions.

Specifically, this module will enable you to:

1. define preposition and imperatives;

2. cite examples of commonly used prepositions;
3. supply the correct prepositions in the given sentences;
4. use prepositions in giving instructions/directions.

PRETEST

Choose the correct prepositions to complete the following sentences:

1. You must come to school ______ time.

A. on B. from C. to D. at

2. This work should be completed ______ tomorrow.

A. on B. by C. at D. in

3. There is no point talking _____ him. He won’t listen.

A. in B. at C. to D. for

4. Stay _____ the bus stop, I will come and pick you up.
A. on B. over C. near D at

5. My grandfather watches the news _______ 9:00 pm every day.

A. for B. at C. to D. on

6
RECAP

The imperative sentence is used to give commands or orders. It

usually ends with a period but can occasionally end with an exclamation
point. These sentences are sometimes referred to as directives because they
provide direction to whoever is being addressed.

In the examples of imperative sentences here, you'll note that each

line is issuing a command:

• Pass the salt.

• Find my leather jacket.
• Be there at five.
• Clean your room.
• Complete these by tomorrow.

LESSON

Complete the following sentences by describing the following pictures. Choose

the letter of the answer from the pool of choices:

A. at B. in C. on D. for E. to

1. The book is _____ the table. 2. The mother is _____ the kitchen.

7
3. The tools are _______ baking. 4. The sign says to ________.

5. The astronaut is looking _____ his watch.

What words did you use to describe the relationship of the subjects or
objects in the pictures? What part of speech shows time, location and
relationship of words in a sentence? They are called Prepositions.

Is it any wonder that prepositions create such troubles for students for
whom English is a second language? We say we are at the hospital to visit a
friend who is in the hospital. We lie in bed but on the couch. We watch a
film at the theater but on television. You will quickly discover that
prepositions are troublesome sometimes. In this module, it will help you
understand and pay attention to the correct preposition usage.

What are prepositions?

Prepositions are words that show spatial (space), temporal (time) or

logical relationship or association of an object to the rest of the sentence.

8
Here are some examples of prepositions and their proper usage:

Prepositions of Time: at, on, and in

We use at to designate specific times.

The train is due at 12:15 p.m.

We use on to designate days and dates.

My brother is coming on Monday.
We're having a party on the Fourth of July.

We use in for nonspecific times during a day, a month, a season, or a year.

She likes to jog in the morning.
It's too cold in winter to run outside.
He started the job in 1971.
He's going to quit in August.

Prepositions of Place: at, on, and in

We use at for specific addresses.

Johnny lives at Blk 5 Lot Borez St. San Isidro Heights, Laguna

We use on to designate names of streets, avenues, etc.

His house is on Borez Street.

And we use in for the names of land-areas (towns, counties, states,

countries, and continents).
He lives in Laguna.
Laguna is in Luzon.
Luzon is in the Philippines.

To keep this as simple as possible, look at the triangle-shaped diagrams

below:

9
“In” covers the biggest area of the triangle, it is the word we use when we
are speaking generally of a place and the biggest or longest amount of time.

“On” is when you want to be a bit more certain, for example you are talking
about a certain place in that vicinity or a certain day or date.

“At” is when you want to be more specific. It covers the smallest area of the
triangle. Example when you want to say a specific address or time.

Prepositions of Direction: by, beside, inside

Use by to show nearness.

He lives in the house by the river.

Use beside to show that something is next to certain thing or a place

Our house is just beside the supermarket.

Use inside to show that something is withing another thing.

There are six horses inside the ranch.

10
Prepositions of Movement: to

We use to in order to express movement toward a place.

They were driving to work together.
She's going to the dentist's office this morning.

Toward and towards are also helpful prepositions to express movement.

These are simply variant spellings of the same word; use whichever sounds
better to you.
We're moving toward the light.
This is a big step towards the project's completion.

Preposition of Possession: of

Use of to show possession, belongingness, and/or origin.

The employees of the company are taking their lunch.

GUIDED PRACTICE 1

Match the missing preposition in each item based on the given picture.
Choose your answers from Column A then write your answers on Column B.

COLUMN A COLUMN B

1. ______ up

2. ______ down

3. ______ above

4. ______ inside

5. ______ on

Do you also know that we can use prepositions on imperatives when giving
commands or directions? The imperative is used to give commands and
orders. The form of the verb used for the imperative is the base form of the
main verb, which is used without a subject.

11
Example: Walk to the corner.
Go straight and turn left.
Turn on the right, then cross the road.
Go across or the opposite side of the street.

Here are some prepositions that are commonly used. Look at the table
below.
