Welcome to the English 1 Self-Learning Module on Recognizing Asking


Sentences!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 2.


All the activities provided in this lesson will help you learn
and understand: Recognizing Asking Sentences.
After completing this module, you will be able to:
1. Identify words used in the beginning of asking
sentences.
2. Recognize asking sentences.
3. Determine what punctuation mark is used in asking
sentences.

RECAP

We have learned that a sentence is a group of words


which makes complete sense. When we speak, we
use sentences. A sentence that tells something is a telling
sentence. It is also called a declarative sentence. It begins
with a capital letter and ends with a period.

LESSON

Look at the picture. What do you see in the picture?

The children are going to school.


They are wearing school uniforms.
They have their bags with them.

Be ready to answer the following questions.

I go to school by walking.

Why is school important?

Is the first letter of the first word in each sentence


capitalized?
Yes, the first letter of the first word in each sentence is
capitalized.

What is found at the end of each group of words?


You are correct! A question mark (?) is found at the end
of each group of words.

Do you understand what the words who, where, when,


why, what and how mean?
Yes, they all ask for something.

The group of words we have read are also


sentences. They are called asking sentences. An asking
sentence starts with a question word to get information. It
starts with a capital letter and ends with a question mark.

Let us study each picture to understand the question

The girl will go to the school clinic if she is sick.

Guided Practice

Raise your two hands if the sentence is an asking sentence,


and raise your right hand if it is not.

1. Who has a dog?


If you raised your two hands, you’re correct! It is an
asking sentence, starts with question word and ends with a
question mark.

2. I have a red hat.


If you raised your right hand, you’re correct! It is not an
asking sentence, it does not start with a question word. The
sentence does not ask anything.

3. Where is your mother?


If you raised your two hands, you’re right! It is an asking
sentence.

4. I like to play at the park.


If you raised your right hand, you’re correct! It is not an
asking sentence, it does not start with question word and it
does not end in a question mark.

Directions: Read each sentence. Put if the sentence is


an asking sentence, and if not.

Directions: The given sentences are not correctly written.
Rewrite each to form asking sentences. Write your answer
on each line provided below. Remember to capitalize the
first letter of the first word in each sentence. Do not forget
to put a question mark (?) at the end of each asking
sentence.
