Reading Aloud Short Stories/Poems with Short Vowel Sounds.

After completing the module, you will be able to:

1. Read aloud short stories and poems consisting of short a, e,
i, o, and u words with speed, accuracy, and proper

i, o, and u vowel sounds.

Mom got me a pet named Pat.

Pat is a black cat, and it sleeps on a white mat.
Pat, my big fat cat, likes to sit on my red bag all day long.
Like a lazy creature, chilling and listening to a song.
But Pat turns mad every time it sees a rat.
It will run and chase the poor little rat.
Pat smiles when it finally caught,
the naughty little rat he fought.
That is Pat, my favorite fat cat!

6
RECAP

In our previous lesson, we learned how we can read words

with initial and final blends such as flag, grass, check, brass, nest,
belt, gift, pond, sand, lift, melt, and pest.
Supply the blanks with the missing initial or final consonant
blends to make each set complete.

7
LESSON

A vowel is a sound such as the ones represented in writing by

the letters 'a', 'e', 'i', ' o', and 'u', which you pronounce with
your mouth open, allowing the air to flow through it. In many words,
vowels do not make a long sound. They make a short vowel sound
instead. How can you tell the difference? Read aloud the story
below.

Read aloud the story about the effect of the virus COVID-19 to us
and in our environment. Underline the words with short a, e, i, o and
u vowel sounds.

COVID-19
It's been months since the cities in the Philippines were under
community quarantine. The Sanchez family was in the living room
when the twins asked their parents some questions about the
pandemic.
"Dad, why do we have to stay at home?" Lin asked.
Mr. Sanchez looked at her and said, "It is because going
outside will expose us from the COVID-19 virus, which can harm our
health. The virus can kill people".
" I’m sad, does it mean we can’t jog and run at the park or
build a tent to play outside?" Len asked.
“We have to stay here at home Len and just rest. We could
help mom by doing some chores. After sleeping we should make
our bed, and then clean our room. We can also feed the dog and
fish,” Lin said.
“Yes, you are right, we could start organizing our things. Bags,
pens, fans, shirts, pants, and donate some of it to the needy. I’m just
sad that we can’t go to the mall and beaches like we used to,” Len
said.
Mr. Sanchez smiled, "But at least we
can spend more time with you now.
Also, our environment is better now. We
have cleaner air, forest, and seas due to
the quarantine. It's time for our mother
earth to improve".
" I hope people learned how to take
care of our environment, to prevent
pandemic like this," Lin added.

15
" Let us help take care of our environment in our little way, "
Len said.

WRAP-UP

To summarize the lesson, let us remember that:

Reading and identifying words with short a, e, i and o vowel
sounds is easy. It takes good practice to do it. Short vowel sounds
occur when the letter is not pronounced the way it sounds. When
producing short vowel sounds, the middle of the tongue stays in a
lower position.

Short vowels usually sound like the following:

• A = 'ah' as in 'alligator'
• E = 'eh' as in 'egg'
• I = 'ih' as in 'iguana'
• O = 'awe' as in 'octopus'
• U = ‘ʊ’ as in ‘bun’

VALUING

The world is our home and we have the responsibility to take

care of our environment, most especially if we want all the plants
and animals to stay for the future generations. We can do
something to help mother earth in our small little ways.
