What I Need to Know

This module provides activities that will help you on


how to use homonyms.
Homonyms will help you improve your comprehension,
vocabulary, and study skills. You will be able to do these by
yourself if you read the discussion and directions carefully.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:


1. share personal experiences; and
2. use homonyms.

What I Know

Read each sentence. Encircle the correct word in the


parentheses that fits the sentence. Do this in your answer
sheet.
1. Argo needs a one (whole, hole) sheet of paper.

2. Lina has a beautiful (dull, doll).

3. Fred catches a big (bug, bag) in the garden.

4. The (hold, old) woman crossed the street slowly.

5. He gained (wait, weight) on his last summer vacation.


Lesson
Using of Homonyms (e.g. flower-
3 flour)

Homonyms are words that have the same sound but


different in meaning and spelling. The word “homo”
means alike.
For example, see and sea are homonyms. See means
to look at while sea means a big body of water.

What’s In

Color the heart red if the sentence tells something true


about homonyms. Do this in your answer sheet.

1. Homonyms are words that have different spelling but


have the same sound.

2. The word “homonym” comes from the prefix “homo”


which means the same.

3. There must be an outline or framework in


the homonym.

4. Scent and sent are examples of homonym.

5. Words with opposite meanings are also


called homonyms.

The teacher must consider the prerequisite skills needed in the
development of this competency including the schema or background
knowledge which may reinforce learning. This module will help the learners
bridge the gap of learning to attain mastery of the lesson in its spiral
progression.

What do you call the pair of words having the same


sound but different in meaning and spelling?

What Is It

Homonyms are words having the same pronunciation


but different in meaning and spelling. Examples are by-
buy, cost- cause, grate- great. These pairs of words
are homonyms, sound alike, but have different meanings
and spelling.
