Welcome to English 1 Self-Learning Module on Telling Sentences!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed


and reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City
headed by its Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma.
Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin, in partnership with the City Government
of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The
writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this
instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and


independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills
especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity,
Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

Let’s read!

These are called sentences.


What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words which expresses a
complete thought. It contains a subject and a
predicate and it gives a statement, question or
command.
What did you observe about these sentences?
It begins with a capital letter and ends with a
period.
What else?
These sentences tell about something.

Today, we are going to talk about telling sentences.


What are telling sentences?
A telling sentence begins with a capital letter and
ends with a period (.). It tells about a person, a place, a
thing, an animal and also an event. Telling sentences
are also known as Declarative Sentences.

Boracay is a beautiful
place.

Have you visited Boracay before?

The sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with


a period.

The sentence simply tells us about something. It tells us


about Boracay.

How is Boracay being described in the sentence?


Boracay is a beautiful place.

What can you say about the sentence?


It expresses a whole idea which has a subject and
a predicate.

In the sentence, Boracay is the subject or what the
sentence is about, and is a beautiful place is the
predicate or what the subject does or is. This sentence
is an example of a telling sentence.

Remember that a telling sentence tells about


somebody or something.
