Acvtivity #4: Philippine History Excerpt Analysis

The Katipunan, which was founded in 1892 by members of La Liga Filipina, liberated the
Philippines from Spanish colonization when the Philippine Revolutionary War ended; without it, Filipinos
would not have been independent since 1898. The Kartilya ng Katipunan looks to be a late-nineteenth-
century manual written in Filipino, for the Filipinos that aims to ameliorate the solidarity of the Filipinos.

“Kartilya ng Katipunan” is written by Emilio Jacinto. It consists of thirteen lessons for the
Katipuneros and the Filipinos that outline not only the Katipunan's goal, but also the vision for a just and
morally sound Filipino nation. It is from the perspective of a Filipino writer who had just experienced the
Philippine Revolutionary War in 1892. The Kartilya ng Katipunan was established minutes of a supreme
assembly held in December 1895. It is to teach every Filipinos to have and live a purposeful life of being
a true Filipino fellowship.

The ideals of Right and Light, Katwiran and Kaliwanagan, were extremely important to the
Katipunan leadership, such as Emilio Jacinto. They considered themselves as not merely heirs to the
Enlightenment, but also intellectual and moral revolutionaries battling to build and define a post-
Enlightenment society and culture.

Questions:
1. Are there new things that you’ve just learned in Philippine History?
- Philippine History has always been here all the time, but in fact yes! I did learn a lot
especially in this activity. It gave me the feeling of curiosity of what had happened during
the Katipunan and La Liga Filipina Era. It was actually a great experience reading the
Philippine History because I have never put my interest in reading one.
2. How does it feel upon knowing it?
- It made me feel that I wanted to go back at the past and study what had truly happened.
Likewise, the “Kartilya ng Katipunan” is a great manuscript that could possibly change the
humanity. It is a perfect fit to our core values so that the next generation could learn how to
be a wise and patriotic Filipino. If I would be given a chance, I will propose the Kartilya ng
Katipunan as a new core values of the Philippines.
