SECTION H: METAL WORKS

H1.00 Cleanliness

H1.01 The Contractor is advise to take particular care of the anodized aluminium surfaces by
using masking tape or other methods of protection and is warned that the SO may
required the removal and replacement of aluminium work which has been damage due to
lack of adequate protection.

H1.02 All materials shall be free from scale, rust damage or defects. All welding, bracing or hot
forging shall be carried out by approved processes.

H1.03 All metal work shall be approved by the Employ s Representative before starting painting
works.

H1.04 All steel items which are not galvanized or zinc-coated are to be primed with a coat of
approved rustproofing primer applied to all surfaces at the workshop or on site
immediately after delivery and before erection and to be touched up where necessary
after erection.

H2.00 Pricing

H2.01 The cost of supplying and fixing metal work generally are to include for horizontal, raking
or vertical work, cutting members to length, for all shop and site welding, rinding, drilling,
countersinking, bolting, rivetting, assembling, adjusting and fixing complete. Rates for
items manufactured in the shop shall include for preparing and submitting shop drawings
for the Supervising Officer's approval before manufacturing commences.

H3.00 Aluminium Windows and Doors (Not Used)

H3.01 Extruded aluminium sections should be in alloy AIMgsi.5 with temper F22 (DIN Specifications)
or equivalent.

H3.02 All visible surfaces of the sections shall have a powder coated finish. Samples of colour shall
be submitted for the Employ s Representative approval before work commences.

H3.03 The sections shall be powder coated to a minimum thickness of 80 microns. The supplier must
submit necessary evidence to the satisfaction of the Employ s Representative that
the thickness of coating is not less than 80 microns. In case of doubt the Employ s
Representative reserves the right to send sample pieces to independent testing
laboratories, at the cost of the supplier. If the testing laboratory report states that the
thickness or quality of the anodization is deficient, the Employer may ask the supplier to
treat the order as cancelled and the supplier in such a case shall immediately indemnify
the Employer of any/all losses incurred by the supplier.

H3.04 Aluminium doors and windows are to be obtained from an approved supplier and shall include
all necessary ironmongery. The doors and windows shall be constructed of extruded
powder coated aluminium sections with joints accurately machined to ensure perfect fit
and mechanically jointed.

H3.05 All items shall be strengthened, tapped and modified as necessary to receive ironmongery.
Windows shall be fixed light or opening as shown on the drawings. Opening lights shall
be hung or sliding as shown on the drawings complete with approved flyscreens. Where
opening lights are hung, solid stainless steel hinges with stainless steel pins and washers
shall be used. Ironmongery shall be provided, and samples shall be submitted to the
Engineer / Client for approval. Where glazing beads are used, they shall be of matching
aluminium. Glass shall be as specified in Glazing Section of the Preambles.

H3.06 All frames should be made to fit the actual openings with a 5mm clearance all round.
Discrepancies in overall width or height exceeding 5mm will not be allowed and the
frames will be rejected in such cases. Any small discrepancies shall have the gaps
suitably backed and then filled with gun-applied mastic sealant.

H3.07 At all opening windows and doors and where there are louvred screen and doors, a flyscreen
shall be provided to the approval of the Employ s Representative, constructed
following the principles and specifications as described elsewhere in this Specification.

H3.08 Insect screens shall be in aluminium mesh, or stainless steel 18 x 16 meshes per inch.
The gap between the insect screen and the shutter shall be covered with an adaptor PVC
section.

H3.09 For reference to window types see general arrangement drawings, elevations and quantities.

H3.10 Tolerances are to be approved by the Employ s Representative before manufacture.

H3.11 All ironmongery which is to have the same finish as the frames it is on shall be approved by
the Employ s Representative

H3.12 The Contractor shall provide shop drawings for aluminium windows and doors which shall be
submitted to the Employ s Representative for approval. A sample of typical window is
to be submitted at 900mm X 900mm actual size using the specified glass and frame
colour, clearly labelled complete with Ironmongery.

H3.13 Approval by the Employ s Representative of the shop drawings shall not relieve the
Contractor of his responsibilities under the Contract.

H3.14 All assembly screws shall be in 18-8 stainless steel.

H3.15 All Brushes to be heavy duty.

H3.16 Glazing sections shall be in special tempered glass and of channel type. Separate glazing
sections on each side of the glass will not be permitted.

H3.17 Rubber to be EPDM.

Sliding Windows and Doors

H3.18 Weatherstripping - high density acrilan or wool weatherpile shall be used. There should be
double brushes at every contact between shutter and frame sections for complete
insulations. These should be present consistently throughout the unit between the inside
and the outside and no portions without it are permitted.

H3.19 The rollers for sliding shutters for both windows as well as doors shall be of adjustable
type. The adjusting screws must be accessible in the assembled state of the shutters and
a vertical adjustment of 7mm should be possible.

H3.20 All sections for sliding windows and doors should be of tabular shape and the cross
sections dimensions of the sections should be not less than 60 x 40mm.

H3.21 The outer frame must be suitable for accommodating sliding fly screens as required.

H3.22 The handle-latch set should have all visible surfaces of stainless steel materials to approval.
The handle must have a proper grip. A small projecting flange or a recess in the shutter
sections cannot be accepted to serve as

handles. The latching mechanism should not be surface mounted but should be
concealed within the sections.

H3.23 Sash rails of vertical sliding windows are to be of tabular box sections with corner joints of
outer frames and sashes interlocked, and the balance mechanism is to be an approved
proprietary product.

Side Hung Windows, Doors and Ventilators

H3.24 All windows and doors should be weatherstripped with heat resistant PVC sections. The
weather fighting action should be achieved by a positive compressive action against the
PVC section and should not depend on an external contact with the PVC section. At
every contact between two weather stripping sections should be provided for complete
weather protection.

H3.25 The bottom sections for hinged doors must be capable of being adjusted vertically if necessary.
The gap between the bottom section and the floor should be covered with a pair of special
flay-type PVC sections.

H3.26 The shutter sections for both windows as well as doors shall be of tabular type and shall be
of overall size 57 x 45mm and door sections shall be overall size 81 x 45 (including
flanges).

H3.27 The shutters of the windows and doors should be assembled with concealed corners of high
rigidity. Hinges should be stainless steel concealed within the sections.

H3.28 Hinges shall be in stainless steel with stainless steel pins and nylon washers.
Handles shall be in stainless steel and mounted with self-lubricating nylon washers.

H3.29 A mortice cylinder rim automatic deadlock of high quality with double pin tumbler is to be
used.

H3.30 Windows shall have stainless steel handles and a latching mechanism securing the shutter
to the frame both at the top and bottom.

H3.31 The glazing vinyl shall be in heat resisting PVC and of channel type. Individual glazing sections
on both sides of the glass will not be permitted.

H3.32 Fittings were required:

(a) Single action door closer concealed in the head bar of the outer frame and mounted
on an adjacent pivot at the threshold and deadlock fitted.

(b) The left hand leaf of double doors with flush bolts at head and sill with deadlock
fitted to the right hand leaf.

(c) Escape doors to have panic bolt assembly with vertical elements concealed in the
stile and door closer as in (a).

H4.00 Flyscreens

H4.01 Flyscreens shall be fitted to all opening leaves of windows consisting of a separate metal
subframe filled in with flywire as previously described. The flyscreens shall be adequately
secured with suitable slips, set screws or turn buckles and shall be removable for
maintenance purposes. Flyscreens doors shall consist of similar sections to the metal
casement doors and shall be fitted with removable panels of flywire, in manner similar to
that described for window flyscreens.

H5.00 Louvres

H5.01 For details of louvred windows refer to window details. Louvres will generally b e powder
coated aluminium box section for the main frame and powder coated aluminium blades .
Flyscreens will be fitted externally to all louvres.

H6.00 Sealing Joints

H6.01 The Contractor shall ensure that joints are dry and remove all loose material, dust and
grease.

H6.02 Joints shall be prepared in accordance with sealant manufacturer's recommendations using
recommended solvents and primers where necessary.

H6.03 Adjoining surfaces which would be impossible to clean if smeared with sealant shall be
masked.

H6.04 Backing strips shall be inserted in all joints to be pointed with sealant.

H6.05 When using backing strips, the Contractor shall not leave gaps and shall not reduce depth
of joint for sealant to less than the minimum recommended by the manufacturer.

H6.06 Cavities shall be filled and jointed with sealant in accordance with the manufacturer's
recommendations.

H6.07 Sealant shall be tooled to form a smooth flat bead.

H6.08 Excess sealant shall be removed from adjoining surfaces using cleaning materials
recommended by the sealant manufacturer, and shall be left clean.

H8.00 Cat Ladders

H8.01 Cat ladders where noted on the drawings shall be galvanised steel with anti rust coat and
unless otherwise detailed shall be constructed as follows. Ø50mm M/S powdercoated
paint grab bar attached to the structure with cat ladder protection ring (Shop drawing to
be provided by Contractor for Engineer s approval)

H8.02 Treads shall be formed of Stringers shall be 65mm x 9mm Galvanized Steel flat bar and
Ø22mm Galvanized steel rung every 300 (max.)

H8.03 Safety loops shall be fitted to cat ladders with Ø20mm aluminum powdercoated rod bracket
with M12 anchor bolt with 500x50x10mm thick aluminum powdercoated fixing plate.

H9.00 Expansion Joints

H9.01 The Contractor is to provide at all expansion joints in floors, roofs, ceilings, walls and columns
extruded aluminium expansion joint cover systems as appropriate and as shown on the
drawings (manufactured by Construction Specialists Inc.) and fixed in accordance with their
printed instructions including all necessary components and fixings.

H9.02 Floor joint covers shall be 2" deep. Butt joints within continuing runs shall be a maximum
of 20 feet apart and will be sealed during installation using C/S butt joint sealing method.

H9.03 Wall and ceiling joint covers shall be standard grey.

H9.04 Roof expansion joint covers shall be Fosroc s Thioflex 600, Sika or other equal approved..

H9.05 Transition pieces at changes of direction and at joints between horizontal and vertical joint
covers shall be factory fabricated.

H10.00 Handrails and Balustrades

H10.01.01 4' high 'Kynar' gold painted or powder coated cast aluminium railing fixed on concrete steps
for staircases as specified including ashwood top rail, decorative type aluminium base
plates, stainless steel bolts & accessories, etc., complete
(Allow a PC Rate supply and fixing of railing : Dhs. 500.00/)

H11.00 UPVC Windows And Doors

H11.01 Properties

H11.01.01 All quality assurance standards of UPVC Windows and Doors must conform to RAL-GZ
716/1 and DIN E 16830 Window sections from high impact uPVC: Part I- method, Part II
requirements.

Only AL logo marked and RAL-GZ 716/1 Quality secured profiles from extruders with
DIN ISO 9001/DIN Iso 9002 accreditation should be used for the manufacturing of uPVC
windows and Doors

H11.01.02 All uPVC Windows and Doors are complying with DN 7748 PVC U, EDL 082-38-28
(1985 Edition), for the manufacturer of uPVC Windows and Door sections, suitable for
heat welded corner joints. Physical properties in accordance with DIN 53448, 53453,
53752-8, 52612, ISO 527, 179, 2039, 62, 306.

H11.02 UPVC Material

H11.02.01 All frames, sashes, mullions etc. of windows and doors must be made of modified high
impact moulding/ extrusion compound, unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, white colour
outside and inside, surface finish to be nonporous, smooth silky gloss, extruded,
producing a rigid minimum three chamber sytem for all main profiles.

H11.03 Design

H11.03.01 All main profiles will be of minimum 3-chamber system in frame and sash with galvanized
steel reinforcement with main chamber as required.

H11.03.02 The corners of the profiles must be homogenously welded.

H11.04 Reinforcement

H11.04.01 The frames and sashes must be reinforced as per static calculations with gakvanized steel
within main chambers of the profile.

H11.05 Gaskets

H11.05.01 All glazing and weather gaskets and seals must be EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene rubbers)
in accordance with DIN 180 1629.

H11.05.02 Glazing and weather gaskets shall be retained in purposedly-designed grooves. Glazing
gaskets shall be butt jointed at corners. Wether seals shall be continous at corner with
butt joint at the head.

H11.05.03 In casement Windows all weathering and glazing gaskets to be provided on sash.

H11.06 Fittings

H11.06.01 Turn/ Tilt- Windows and Doors must have turn and tilt mechanism with multiple perimeter
locking system and suitable handles.

H11.06.02 Sliding- Windows and Doors must have sliding mechanism, espagnolettes with minimum 2
point mushroom head cam locking systems and suitable handles.

H11.06.03 Tilt/ Sliding- Windows and doors must have tilt and sliding mechanism, espagnolette with
multiple perimeter locking system and suitable handles.

H11.06.04 Hinged- Doors should be provided with locking system conforming to RAL-RG 607/3.

H11.06.05 All fitting must be Zinc dip galvanized as per DIN 50961 and 50941. Hinges for hinged
door can be powdercoated.

H11.07 Glazing

H11.07.01 All Windows and Doors must have double- glazing. Minimum thickness per glass pane
must be 6mm. Both panes must be sealed against an aluminum spacer, containing a
desiccant and providing on air space between 8-12mm. Glazing can vary in color,
shading and performance and panes has to be assembled in accordance to required
specification.

H11.07.02 In case of side hung, turn/ tilt, tilt/sliding, fixed Windows and Doors, as well as heavy-duty
sliding Doors double-glazing must have the overall thickness of 20mm unless mentioned
in particular specifications.

H11.07.03 In case of sliding Windows and Doors, Double-glazing must have the overall Thickness of
20mm unless mentioned in particular specifications.

H11.08 Insulation Door Panels

H11.08.01 All insulation door panels must be cladded on both sides with UPVC plastic sheets in
white colour wiith wall thickness not less than 2mm each and must have high density
polyurethane foam insulation in between these sheets. An overall thickness of insulation
door panels must be 24mm and they must conform to a K value of <1.2W/m2K.

H11.09 Accessories

H11.09.01 Roll-up fly-screens- consist of an aluminum head box containing a spring loaded roller
tube carrying the mesh. Roller tube must be of extruded aluminium and rotate in nylon
bearings. The type of spring motor used must have suffiecient capacity to completely
rewind screens conforming to the maximum dimensions. The mesh should should have a
core of fiberglass and be UPVC coated. The diameter of the individual fiber threads must
be 0.3mm.

H11.09.02 Roll-up Window Blinds- consist of an UPVC head box containg a hand operated string
driven roller tube mechanism, which is carrying the fabric. Roller tube must be of extruded
aluminium and rotate in nylon bearings. Fabrics or shading foils must be UV resistant, can
vary in color and shading performance and has to be assembled in accordance to required
specification.

H11.09.03 Rolling Shutters- consist of an UPVC head box containing the mechanism which is carrying
the roller slats. The roller slats are made of aluminum and powdercoated to RAL Standards.
The mechanism will be either manually operated with help of a belt/crank shaft or it
can be electrically operated with a tubular motor connected to an integrated system. The
concealed nead box must have access to reach the moving parts for inspection. Roller
slats will move in uPVC side channels.
