Thermographic Inspection
Service Data Sheet

Description
During this expert service, ExxonMobil Industrial Lubricants
field engineers will:
• Inspect and document the temperature and condition of critical plant
equipment and processes
• U
se inspection and temperature data to help locate and eliminate
potential problems with equipment, thus helping to extend equipment
and lubricant life and minimize unplanned downtime
• C
omplement existing condition monitoring programs, such as oil
analysis and vibration measurements, by correlating temperature data
with actual visual inspections

Application
ExxonMobil Industrial Lubricants field engineers work with local plant maintenance and engineering personnel to:
• Schedule periodic (generally annual) thermographic inspections
• Identify equipment that shows indications of problems, such as temperature spikes or extreme temperature variances,
and needs to have periodic inspections
• Collect thermographic data and record observations on critical equipment
• Photograph (with plant approval) the components
• Communicate results to plant personnel
• Prepare an Engineering Service Report that includes:
- Details of the theromographic inspections completed
- Interpretation of the data collected and identification of problems
- Comparison of the results with data from previous inspections and other monitoring programs, and equipment builder
and industry benchmarks
- Estimated value of the service to the customer
• Present the completed report to top plant management and key personnel

Potential Benefits
Potential benefits could include the following:
• Reduced unscheduled downtime
• Increased productivity of equipment
• Lower maintenance labor costs
• Fewer component replacements
• More effective maintenance control
• Safety and environmental improvements
Deliverables Safety, Health, and Environment

An Engineering Service Report outlining conditions found, ExxonMobil Industrial Lubricants field engineers:
recommended corrective actions, improvements to operational
• Are attuned to the hazards of handling, storage, and use of
or maintenance procedures, and estimated value of the
petroleum products
service to the customer. The report will include photographs
and tables as appropriate. • Coordinate efforts through designated plant personnel

• Strictly observe the site’s safety rules and ExxonMobil’s

safety practices
Common Opportunity Areas
• Verify equipment electrical and mechanical lockout, proper
• Incorrect lubricant or inadequate lubricant flow
tagging, and potential explosion hazards prior to working on
• Lack of optimum oil temperatures or inspecting equipment

• Steam leak or other temperature variations in components • Provide recommendations to help reduce the hazards
associated with spill, leakage, and fire
• Misalignment
• Provide applicable product safety data (material safety data
• Inadequate oil drain periods and filtration practices
sheets) for the lubricants supplied by ExxonMobil

• Are available to support company-required safety training

• For ExxonMobil Planned Engineering Service (PES)
