1. SCOPE
This procedure covers installation and inspection of Drainage Piping System.
Installation & testing of drainage piping and fittings for all applications in line with
project requirements.

2. PURPOSE
This method of statement is applicable for Installation & testing of all types drainage
piping system in all areas for the project. The Purpose of this method statement is to
ensure that the installation of Pipes, Fittings & Accessories and related activities are
executed safely and in accordance with the contract requirements and that ball quality
assurance / control activities required for the same are conducted in a systematic
manner, works are inspected and conformance is verified and documented.

On receipt, materials will be handled & stored in line with the following procedures:
 All materials shall be inspected upon receipt at site against the delivery note,
packing list for completeness and visually inspected for physical damage/s.
 All materials shall be loaded directly on the store area or safe place where it
could be unpacked lifted and shifted to the final position.
 Materials must be handled with care during transportation and should not be
dragged or dropped especially on hard surfaces.
 The vehicle should have flatbed free from sharp projections of any kinds. Also,
the pipes must be supported strongly inside the vehicle and should not overhand
pipe length more than 1 meter.
 The larger size and thicker pipes should be loaded first. And for more

 Drainage Pipes should be stored on a flat dry level surface free from sharp
projections, stones or other objects likely to cause point loading or pipe
deformation.
 Timber supports spaced 1.5m apart along the pipe can be used to support the
pipes. The width of the stack should not exceed 3m.
 Pipes of different sizes should be stacked separately or where this is not possible,
hose with larger diameters and/or thicker walls should be placed at the bottom
of the stack.
 The height of the stack should never exceed 7 layers or maximum 2m high.
 The storage area will be kept in proper level so that the stacked pipes may be
uniformly supported throughout their length.
 If mechanical lifting equipment is used ensure no metallic slings, hooks or chains
will be used in direct contact with the pipes. Roof or nylon belt sling will be
preferred which will not damage or cut the pipe surface.
 Pipe of different sizes or wall thickness will be stored separately or where this is
not possible, those with larger diameters and / or thicker walls will be placed at
the bottom of the stack.
 All pipes and fittings should be properly covered with tarpaulins to protect them
from UV rays. The tarpaulins are to be fixed to the wooden supports, which allow
a free passage of air around the pipes.
 Fittings will be stored in sheltered conditions in the boxes as supplied to protect
them from weathering and accidental damage.

Pre-Installation
Before starting the installation activities the approved shop drawing and approved
material shall be ready and available at site.
Area and access will be inspected to confirm that the site is ready and is safe to
commence the work.
All relevant documentation and material applicable to a particular section of works will
be checked by site Engineer before commencement of work.
All Installation will be made as per approved shop drawings.
All materials to be used in the installation will be as per approved material submittal.

Prior to installation, the pipes and fittings will be cleaned properly.
All supports will be installed ensuring correct alignment of pipes and location having
regards to manufacturer’s recommendations.
Sleeves will be provided wherever water supply pipes pass through walls, slabs, etc.
Annular space between pipes and sleeves will be filled with rock wool and both ends
will be sealed with fireproof sealant as specified.
Coordination with other trades is checked to avoid conflicts of routings.
Survey and verification of pipe routing is carried out as per the approved shop drawing
and coordination drawing.
Marking of supports must be done as per routing of pipes. Distance between supports
shall be as per specification and load carrying capacity of the hanger.
Drilling must be done for the expansion/ anchor bolt installation.
Install rods and clamps aligned to the direction of the pipe.
Pipes and fittings are joined together as per the methods section below.
For horizontal fixing, the pipes are carefully raised to the high level and fixed into the
clamps. Supports and clamps shall be as per specified.
Fix pipes properly to the clamps provided with the correction location and level as per
the approved shop drawing.
Risers are installed fixing pipes vertically into the clamps and joining riser pipes from
below. Supports and clamps shall be as per specified.
The clamps should not be fastened very tightly as damages can occur due to thermal
expansions of pipes. Expansions and contraction shall be provided as per specification.
Provide water hammer arrestor to prevent development of water hammer in the water
distribution.
Manufacturer’s recommendations are followed as applicable.
In case of open end pipe, end shall be capped and protected from any possible damages.
Provision for expansion and contraction such as expansion bellows, loops will be
provided as required.
Necessary anchor / sliding supports will be provided as required at site to accommodate
the expansion / contraction of the system.
Drain valves will be installed in the lowest point & Air vents will be installed in the
highest point as per requirements at site during installation.

The cleaner to be used in cleaning the pipes will be as per the manufacturer’s
recommended cleaning material.
Piping installation will be fitted with expansion loops as necessary. Pipes will be fixed
inside the block walls with full coordination with civil works and distance from wall
finishing distance will be considered. Wall angle valves will be installed after a full
coordination with interior design fit up of the room or wet rooms.
Pipes and fittings shall be fixed following proper spacing and with proper supports. Pipe
interface with other services shall be ensured.
Valves shall be installed according to the location stated in the drawings which shall be
accessible for ease of maintenance.
Crane shall be used to lift the water pipes and fittings as necessary.
Install piping parallel to columns and/or walls. Pipe shall be laid over the supports a per
approved shop drawings and in coordination with other services.
Vertical piping shall be supported in the centre and bottom of each riser with approved
steel brackets to prevent swaying, sagging and vibration.
Inspection request shall be raised for installation inspection for Consultant approval.
Upon approval of Installation, Pressure Test shall be carried out.
After the successful pipe installation, pipes shall be protected from being damaged.
Capped off plug or cover all exposed pipe ends to avoid foreign debris from entering the
pipes. Flushing and sterilization methodology shall be discussed separately.
Manufacturer’s recommendations shall be followed to connect the piping to the sanitary
fixtures.
All PPR pipes will be connected using welding joints.
Housekeeping to be carried out after piping work is completed.

7. QUALITY CONTROL
Quality of installation and materials at site will be ensured by our project team
consisting of a Project Manager, Project Engineer, QA / QC Engineer and the site

Foreman. Quality of the work will be according to the NFPA standards and local civil
defence authority requirements.

8. STORAGE AND HANDLING


The pipes will be stacked in the site store on a flat surface at a height not exceeding
1.7m. From the bottom layer. Fittings will be separately packed and stored as per the
sizes required for the project. All open ends of pipes will be covered to protect from
foreign matter, dirt/debris.

9. RESPONSIBILITIES / SUPERVISION
1. To ensure that all the preparation and application works are carried out according to
the Contract Specification and Manufacturer’s data sheet.
2. To ensure that the progressing of works is carried out according to the planned
program and as per the approved method statement.
3. To ensure that all the equipment and material required executing the work are
available according to the planned construction program.
4. To co-ordinate with the Main Contractor MEP Coordinator & Safety Officer for a
safe and proper execution of the work
5. To provide all necessary information and to distribute responsibilities to his
construction team.
6. The Foreman will be responsible for the following:
7. The foreman will carry out his duties by maintaining continuous coordination with
the project engineer on daily basis, to ensure proper distribution of the work force in
the required and planned locations.
8. To provide to the project engineer a daily progress report indicating the works
achieved and discuss with him the planned activities for the next day.
9. To ensure that the daily work is progressing as planned and to advise the project
engineer of any requirement for additional resources
10.To be aware of test frequencies related to the pipe work and Hydrostatic.
11.To control disposal of waste materials according to the instruction received for the
project engineer.

12.To ensure full coordination with the safety officers to maintain safe working and
proper housekeeping of the site, following the approved safety measures and further
ensure that all his working team are aware of the same to prevent accident and losses.
13.To inform the project engineer about the readiness of work for inspection and it’s
checking, if any.

11.FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM DESCRIPTION


8.1 Sprinkler system: Definition.
An Integrated system of underground and overhead piping designed in accordance with
fire protection engineering standards. The portion of the Sprinkler system above
ground in a network of specially sized OR hydraulically designed piping installed in a
building, structure, OR area generally overhead and to which sprinklers are attached in
a systematic pattern. The valve controlling each system riser is located in the system
riser OR its supply piping. The system is activated by heat from a fire and discharges
water over the fire area.

A sprinkler system employing automatic sprinklers attached to a piping system
containing water and connected to a water supply so that water discharges immediately
from sprinkler opened by heat from a fire.

8.3 SYSTEM COMPONENTS

8. Minimum one four-way inlet breaching connection – to 2 1/2” fire hose and two-
way inlet breaching connection to 1” fire hose reel system will be connected
according to the accessibility to connect with fire department vehicle.

12.WORK SEQUENCE AND METHODOLOGY


9.1 Installation of fire sprinkler system
1. The installation of Fire Sprinkler System shall be according to the approved detailed
shop drawings and also as per the recommendations of NFPA 13 & civil Defence
requirements.
2. Pipe hangers shall be spaced at intervals as specified in our approved shop drawing.
3. Threaded piping will be made with Teflon tape or with a suitable pipe sealing
compound (jute and mastic combination) applied on male treads only. Ends of pipe
will be renamed out before being made up into fitting.
4. 2” and below sizes of pipe are made threaded & 2 ½” and above sizes are normally
grooved type. Groove can be made roll groove.
5. All black steel pipes coming underground to gate valve will be wrapped with
polyvinyl chloride tape.

6. Sprinkler Head Location shall be installed in accordance with approved system plans
and coordinated RCP layout.

9.2 Installation of Sprinkler Head:


1. All the Sprinkler Heads must be installed according to current NFPA 13 standard.
2. The system piping must be properly sized according to the approved drawings and
calculation to insure the minimum required flow rate at the sprinkler head.
3. Install the Sprinkler Heads after the piping is in place to avoid mechanical damage.
4. In the event of a thread leak, remove the unit, apply new pipe Teflon tape, and
reinstall.
5. The face of the sprinkler fitting should be installed a nominal 3/8” to 1” behind the
finished ceiling line, adjustment may be made via the push-on escutcheon plate to
compensate for variation in the fittings.
6. Hand tightens the sprinkler into the fitting using the proper size of wrench.
7. To install the escutcheon plate, align it with and press it over the sprinkler body until
the outer edge of the escutcheon meets the mounting surface

9.3 Installation of OS&Y Gate Valve:


1. The OS&Y Gate Valve should be located as per the approved drawings, also to
make sure that it is located where it will be readily accessible for operation,
inspection and maintenance.
2. During Installation make sure that the valve Gate does not interfere with the
operation of other systems components immediately adjacent to the OS&Y Gate
valve.
3. The inlet and outlet piping adjacent to the valve should be properly supported to
prevent excessive stress on the valve body. The valve should not be used to force a
pipeline into position as this may result in distortion of the valve body.

9.4 Installation of Flow Switch:


4. The flow switch should be located as per the approved drawings, also to make sure
that it is located where it will be readily accessible for operation, inspection and
maintenance.

5. The flow switch may be mounted on a horizontal or vertical pipe. On Horizontal
pipe they should be installed on the top side of the pipe where they will accessible.
6. Drain the system and drill a hole in the pipe using a circular saw in a slow speed
drill. The whole size shall be 2”.
7. Clean the inside pipe of all growth or other material for a distance equal to the pipe
diameter on either side of the hole.
8. Roll the vane so that it may be inserted in the hole; do not bend or crease it.
9. Insert the Vanes so that the arrow on the saddle points in the direction of the water
flow.
10. Install the saddle strap and tighten nuts alternately.
11. The vane must not rub the inside of the pipe or bind in anyway.

13. METHOD OF PRESSURE TESTING OF PIPING

10.3 Method of Testing


1. Flushing the pipe network
2. Install all the sprinkler
3. Close all the drain valves.
4. Fill complete pipeline with water avoiding any air column. (For this purpose keep
the drain valve at the highest elevation slightly open, while filling water when line is
completely filled with water close the valve)
5. By a pressure pump pressurize the line to an intermediate pressure, say 100 psi.
Wait for 5 minutes; check all major joints for any visible leak.
6. If the system is OK as per point No. 4 again pressurize the system to 150 psi and
wait for 10 minutes for any drop in pressure or leakage.
7. If the system is found to be leak proof as per item No. 5 pressurizes the line to the
required testing pressure and keep for 2 hrs.

10.4 Functional Testing for Sprinkler System
