302-02 Assignment 3 Spring 2022

1. Textbook problem 1.3. For the spring-mass system shown, determine the
effective stiffness, circular natural frequency, and the equation of motion.

2. Textbook problem 1.6
Consider the free motion in the x y plane of a compound pendulum that consists of a rod
suspended from a point (Fig. P1.6). The length of the rod is L and its mass is m is distributed
considering that the width varies from zero at O to b at the free end (hint centroid is at 2L/3
from O). The angular displacement of the centerline of the pendulum measured from the y-
axis is denoted by θ(t).
a. Derive the equation governing θ(t).
b. Linearize the equation for small θ.
c. Determine the natural frequency of small oscillations.

3. Textbook Problem 1.11. For the beam shown (assume massless SDOF
system), determine the stiffness and the equation governing the free
vibration of the system.

5. Textbook problem 1.17 modified with values for variables w, E, h, A:
A heavy rigid platform of weight w = 20 kips is vertically supported on four
columns, which are hinged at the top and the bottom. The system is braced
laterally in each side panel by two diagonal 1.5” diameter rod steel braces
with cross-sectional area A and elastic modulus E = 29,000 ksi. Each brace
is pretensioned to a high stress so that it contributes to the lateral stiffness.
Neglecting the mass of the columns and wires, determine the circular
natural frequency of the system and derive the equation of motion
governing free vibration in (a) the x-direction, and (b) the y-direction.

Hint: Assume 4 effective braces in each of the x and y directions as being

effective in resisting lateral loads. The columns are hinged at each end, do
not flex, and only carry vertical loads but not horizontal loads.
