Background of the Study
Farming is the primary source of income among numerous Filipino families. Approximately
5 million Filipino farmers cultivate 30% of the country’s total land area. The vast majority of
these farmers rely on commercial fertilizers to produce high-quality crops. Although commercial
fertilizers have already been proven to increase agricultural production, they may contain large
concentrations of hazardous chemicals, including zinc, lead, cadmium, chromium, and even
arsenic. These chemicals may result in harmful effects on human health or even death.
Banana, on the other hand, is one of the most consumed fruit crops in the Philippines. It
is an important source of local and international revenues for farmers. Making use of this fruit’s
peelings and properly disposing of them afterward will greatly aid the country’s land pollution &
chemical fertilizer problem. Banana peels are good for crops because they contain 42 percent
potassium. Potassium helps plants resist drought, and enhance the crop’s flavor and quality.
Therefore, carrying out this research is like hitting two birds with one stone.
