Research Title:

“The Efficacy of Banana Peel Compost Tea as Organic Liquid Fertilizer”

Background of the Study
Farming is the primary source of income among numerous Filipino families. Approximately
5 million Filipino farmers cultivate 30% of the country’s total land area. The vast majority of
these farmers rely on commercial fertilizers to produce high-quality crops. Although commercial
fertilizers have already been proven to increase agricultural production, they may contain large
concentrations of hazardous chemicals, including zinc, lead, cadmium, chromium, and even
arsenic. These chemicals may result in harmful effects on human health or even death.
Banana, on the other hand, is one of the most consumed fruit crops in the Philippines. It
is an important source of local and international revenues for farmers. Making use of this fruit’s
peelings and properly disposing of them afterward will greatly aid the country’s land pollution &
chemical fertilizer problem. Banana peels are good for crops because they contain 42 percent
potassium. Potassium helps plants resist drought, and enhance the crop’s flavor and quality.
Therefore, carrying out this research is like hitting two birds with one stone.

Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to: (1) determine the effectiveness of banana peel compost tea
as a liquid fertilizer; (2) compare the efficacy of banana peel compost tea and commercial
fertilizer (3) find out the relationship between the amount of banana peels and the compost tea’s
efficiency.

Significance of the Study

The use of commercial fertilizer results in the contamination of surface water via runoffs
and its consequent effects. Consuming nitrate and nitrite contaminated water cause a disorder in
children known as ‘methemoglobinemia’. This leads to various other disorders such as damage
to the respiratory and vascular system, blue coloration of the skin, and even cancer.
That is why it is crucial that we find an organic, safe, cost-effective, attainable, time-
bound, and realistic alternative fertilizer for our Filipino farmers. The use of banana peels as
compost tea or organic liquid fertilizer in plant growth meets all the criteria. Furthermore, this
research will aid in the resolution of the country's land and air pollution problem. This is because
when banana peels undergo decomposition, it emits fumes/gases that contribute to air pollution.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study limits the use of waste banana peels as compost tea. It will take place
at the researcher’s residence in Brgy. Sudlonon, Bogo City, Cebu. The banana peels to be used in
the experiment are guaranteed to be in good condition.

Definition of Terms
Compost Tea- is water in which compost has been steeped.
Nitrate- is a nitrogen oxoanion formed by loss of a proton from nitric acid
Nitrite- is the intermediate oxidation state between ammonia and nitrate
Methemoglobinemia- is a blood disorder in which an abnormal amount of
methemoglobin is produced
