ILLUSTRATING QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

A Quadratic Equation is an equation in which the

highest power of the variable is 2.
Examples of Quadratic Equation

1. x2 + 7x = 0
2. 6y2 + y – 2 = 0
3. z2 – 23z = 8
4. 2w2 = 9
5. 4p2 = -12p
Activity 1

Quadratic or Not Quadratic?

Identify which of the following equations are
quadratic and which are not. If the equation is not
quadratic, explain.

_______________1. 3m + 8 = 15

_______________2. x2 – 5x + 10 = 0

_______________3. 12 – 4x = 0

_______________4. 2t2 – 7t = 12

_______________5. 6 – 2x + 3x2 = 0

_______________6. 25 – r2 = 4r

_______________7. 3x(x – 2) = –7

_______________8. 1/2 (h – 6) = 0

_______________9. (x + 2)2 = 0

_______________10. (w – 8) (w + 5) = 14

Set Me to Your Standard!

Write each quadratic equation in standard form,
ax2 + bx + c = 0

1. 3x – 2x2 = 7 2. 5 – 2x2 = 6x

3. (x + 3)(x + 4) = 0 4. (2x + 7)(x – 1) = 0

5. 2x(x – 3) = 15 6. (x + 7)(x – 7) = –3x

7. (x – 4)2 + 8 = 0 8. (x + 2)2 = 3(x + 2)

9. (2x – 1)2 = (x + 1)2

10. 2x(x + 4) = (x – 3)(x – 3)
