BUSINESS PROPOSAL FOR WASTE PAPER MANAGEMENT

SCMS BUSINESS SCHOOL

SCMS-Cochin has over 1000 students and faculty and waste paper
management and effective utilization is one of the most serious problems the
school is facing.

1) News paper gets accumulated for months in the store room near to the
front office.
2) Lot of paper has been used for various administrative purposes and
exam purposes.
3) Large books have been used for various purposes like in libraries where
huge registers are used to record attendance as well as for the issuance
and return of books.
4) Assignments and case studies too require a lot of paper.
5) More plastic wastes are accumulating in the campus.

Solutions

These are few of the possible solutions that we came up with:

1) Results could be declared through moodle.

2) Case study and assignments submission through moodle.
3) Use of recycled paper for official purposes.
4) College and placement brochures could be printed on recycled plastic.
5) Exams could be held online whenever it could be done.
6) Digitalize library.
7) Leave application could be done through moodle.
8) Records could be digitalized.

Implementation of the solution

These solutions if they are to be implemented, do not require much

investment, but if made practical could save quite a lot of money.
1. Declaring results through moodle is quite a feasible option. Such a
facility could be easily added on moodle. This will also help to avoid the
huge crowd in front of the notice board when results are declared and
which normally leads to a lot of confusion. Also since the soft copy of the
results are already being created for taking the print outs, it is just
enough to upload the soft copy of the results on moodle and save a lot
of time for students.
2. Submission of case studies and assignments could be made through
moodle which is already being done in many cases. Using plagiarism –
detect tools can effectively discourage students from doing “copy-paste”
work from websites, eBooks etc. This move will serve to reduce the
usage of paper by a significant quantity and reduce the cost of disposing
paper waste.
3. There are large quantities of waste and unused paper which can make
recycling a quite economical option. The large amounts of waste paper
could be recycled without much cost and recycled paper could be used
in all departments for all purposes including official documentation.
4. There are now technologies available for recycling plastic. These new
technologies could be explored to understand the best acceptable
method. There are large quantities of plastic waste generated each day
at SCMS. Using the best available technology, this could be made very
useful and economical. Recycled plastic could be used to print college
brochures etc and this could be a very effective marketing strategy if
proper communications are done. The fact that recycled plastic is used
at SCMS – Cochin can be used to differentiate itself from other colleges
and thus acquire brand value. This along with using recycled paper could
help SCMS earn a very positive reputation by being more eco - friendly
than others.
5. More exams are now being held online. This facility could be used as
much possible thus reducing the dependence on paper. Except for end
-term and mid - term almost all other exams could be taken online. Since
such a facility already exists, there is not much investment required in
these cases
6. Digitalising the library is another feasible method. More eBooks could be
made available and those will help address the issue of shortage of
copies of books. Such a move will ensure that there is no shortage of
information for any student. Also the registers for recording attendance
could be done away with completely if a system like a swipe-card system
is introduced. This will ensure more efficiency and attendance of the
students could be recorded in a better manner.
7. Leave application and application for exams could be made online. Leave
application forms, though small are used in large quantities. Making
arrangements for online submission of leave application and exam
applications would help make the overall process simpler. Adding such a
feature on moodle is very much practical and does not require much
investment. The overall process would be made much simpler for the
students as well as for the staff members who need to approve the
applications.

Business continuity

A committee consisting of students of both first year and second year

could be formed which meets once every week to review their activities.
They could focus on establishing the economic benefits of the “paper
management “system. They could seek to find better ways for more
efficient activities which could be implemented in the most cost effective
ways. They could update on newer technologies and focus on building a
brand image as the most eco-friendly business school.
