ANALYSIS OF TOTAL ASH & ACID INSOLUBLE ASH CONTENT


OBJECTIVE:

To determine the Total Ash & acid insoluble ash

APPARATUS:

Furnace
Crucible
Desiccators
Weighing Balance

PROCEDURE FOR TOTAL ASH:

 Take an empty crucible and dry it in furnace for 1 hr at 150 °C.


 Cool it in desiccators and weigh.
 Take about 5-10g of sample and place it in furnace for 6-8 hrs at 550 °C.
 Cool in desiccators and again weigh.

CALCULATIONS:

% of Ash = ( (W₂ - W) / (Wₒ - W) ) x 100

Where;

W is weight of empty crucible


Wₒ is weight of crucible + sample before ignition
W₂ is Weight of crucible + Sample after ignition

PROCEDURE FOR ACID INSOLUBLE ASH:

 Add 25 ml of dilute hydrochloric acid in to the total ash obtained and bring to boil.
 Allow to cool and filter the contents through an ash less filter paper.
 Wash the filter paper with hot water.
 Ignite in furnace at 550 °C for 2 hour. Cool the dish in desiccators and weigh.

CALCULATIONS:

% of acid insoluble ash = ( (W₄-W₃) / Wₐ ) X 100

Where;

W₃ is weight of empty dish

W₄ is the weight of dish + sample after ignition

Wₐ is the weight of dish + Total ash = W₂ - W
