Radio 4 is well known for its radio dramas such as ‘darkness’ and ‘vital signs’.
The average age of the Radio 4 listener is 56 years old and skews towards an
older audience. However, their target audience of 35-54 makes up 24% of the
audience. Statistics show that 11.55 million adults listen to Radio 4 each week
and the average listener tunes in for 11 hours each week.

Peter Crawley stated that although audiences for radio drama have shrunk in
recent years, coinciding with more radio adaptations of stage plays, the genre
is by no means dead.

One of the most popular radio dramas of all time is Orsen Welles ‘War of the
worlds’. On October 30th 1938 Orsen Welles panicked millions of radio listeners
with their creative and inventive production of War of the Worlds. The realism
of the radio drama caused listeners to believe the news reading was actual
news, consequently making it one of the most famous radio dramas of all time.
Some estimates say approximately as many as 1.7 million listeners were
'affected' by the broadcast.
