2 Precautions
Laser Safety
Never look into an optical port because the invisible infrared laser light transmitted by the laser on
the optical interface board may injure your eyes permanently.
Electrical safety
ESD
To prevent damage to sensitive components by electrostatic discharge (ESD)
from to the human body when you touch the device, daughter board, board, or
IC chip, wear an ESD wrist strap and connect the other end of the ESD wrist
strap to the ground.
ESD from the human body may damage electrostatic sensitive components on circuit boards, such as
the large-scale integrated circuits (LIC).
Bundling Cables
• The distance between cable ties or binding straps inside the cabinet must not exceed
250 mm.
• Use diagonal pliers to cut off the extra part of a cable tie to the end, and ensure that a
cable tie is neat without sharp burs to avoid hand injury.
Attaching labels
• After cable routing, attach labels to the cable 20 mm away from the connector.
• After a label is attached to a signal cable, the rectangular text area of the label must
face rightwards or downwards.
• After a label is attached to a power cable, the text area of the label must face rightwards
or upwards. Ensure that the side attached with a label faces outwards.

2
Record the attenuation of the tested fiber in the form in Appendix D.
If the difference between P2 and P1 is less than 1.5 dB, the fiber connection is
normal. Otherwise, the fiber needs cleaning. If the difference between P2 and P1
is still greater than 1.5 dB, replace the fiber.
You are advised to select a wavelength near 1550 nm as the light source wavelength
and set the wavelength of the optical power meter to 1550 nm. If the device has been
powered on and has a board that can generate light, you can use this board as the light
source.

Overview
Appendix E: Basic Maintenance for OSU4811
Installing, Relocating, and Replacing an OSU4811
When installing, relocating, or replacing an OSU4811, do not place the OSU4811 on an
unstable box or table. Otherwise, serious or permanent damage will be caused to the
OSU4811 once the device falls off.
Plugging and unplugging power cables
Do not plug or unplug a power plug when the power supply is turned on. When inserting or
removing a power cable connector, hold and pull the connector instead of pulling the cable;
otherwise, the cable connector may become loose, causing poor contact.
DIP Switch Settings
Check the DIP switch settings of the OSU4811, including the ID address, working mode, and
terminal build-out resistor of the node where the OSU4811 is located. Ensure that the DIP
switch settings meet the actual application requirements.
Fiber Connection and End Face Cleaning
During the optical path connection and optical signal test of the OSU4811, ensure that the
fiber connections are correct and the fiber end faces are clean. Use dedicated tools and
detergents to clean fiber end faces to prevent line quality deterioration or service
interruption caused by high insertion loss due to unclean fiber connectors or end faces.
Clean the end faces of the fiber connectors, optical port of the OSU, and adapter, and take
dustproof measures.
Cleaning End Faces of Fiber Connectors
Clean the end face of a connector once in one direction using two layers of dry lint-free
cotton. If a connector is severely contaminated, wet the two layers of lint-free cotton with a
small amount of detergent and clean the end face of the connector once in one direction.
Use another dry lint-free cotton and repeat the preceding steps again to ensure that the
end face of the connector is dry. Do not clean the same place every time. You can also use
an electric fiber end face cleaner to clean the fiber end faces. Exert a proper force when
cleaning the fiber end faces and connectors to avoid damaging the connectors or scratching
the end faces.
Cleaning Optical Ports on the OSU4811
Dip a lint-free cotton stick with a diameter that matches the optical port into detergent,
insert the stick into the optical port, and rotate the stick in the same direction for one circle.
Then, insert another dry lint-free cotton stick of the same diameter into the optical port,
and rotate the cotton stick in the same direction for one circle. After the cleaning is
complete, cover the optical ports that are not used immediately with dustproof caps.
When cleaning the end faces, exert a proper force; otherwise, the end faces of the connectors
may be damaged or the connectors inside the device may be pushed away from the adapters.
When inserting a fiber connector into an adapter, keep the connector horizontal with the
center of the adapter. Do not forcibly push or pull the connector; otherwise, the locking
mechanism of the adapter may be damaged or the internal ceramic socket may be cracked.
Remove a dustproof cap only immediately before installing a device; otherwise, dust may
enter the socket and affect connection quality.

Fiber Connectors and End Faces
Application Scenario
An SC/LC fiber patch cord is used to connect the PON board of the MA5800-X7 to the OSU4811.
An LC/LC fiber patch cord is used to connect the TEST port on the OSU4811 to the OTHF board on
the MA5800-X7. When the LCT is used to check the fiber line attenuation, if the insertion loss is
found to be excessively large, the possible cause is that the fiber patch cord connector or the end
face of the optical port on the device is contaminated. In this case, you need to check and clean
the fiber connector and the end face of the optical port by referring to this section.

Procedure
1. Remove a fiber connector with an excessive attenuation from the MA5800-X7 or OSU4811. (This
operation will interrupt services and you need to obtain the customer's permission in advance.)
