Introduction

We must have knowledge of our enemy but not fear him. We are
called to be aware of his tactics without being preoccupied with the devil.
Before answering different questions on the topic of deliverance, I would
like to set the background concerning who the devil is. Scottish minister
M.G. Easton, author of the Bible Dictionary defines Satan.

Satan is called adversary; accuser. When used as a proper name, the

Hebrew word so rendered has the article "the adversary" (Job 1:6
12; 2:17). In the New Testament, it is used as interchangeable with
Diabolos, or the devil, and is so used more than thirty times. He is
also called "the dragon," "the old serpent" (Revelation 12:9 20:2);
"the prince of this world" (John 12:31; 14:30); "the prince of the
power of the air" (Ephesians 2:2); "the god of this world" (2
Corinthians 4:4); "the spirit that now worketh in the children of
disobedience" (Ephesians 2:2). The distinct personality of Satan and
his activity among men are thus obviously recognized. He tempted
our Lord in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). He is "Beelzebub, the
prince of the devils" (Matthew 12:24). He is "the constant enemy of
God, of Christ, of the divine kingdom, of the followers of Christ, and
of all truth; full of falsehood and all malice, and exciting and
seducing to evil in every possible way." His power is very great in
the world. He is a "roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" ( 1
Peter 5:8). Men are said to be "taken captive by him" ( 2 Timothy
2:26). Christians are warned against his "devices" (2 Corinthians
2:11) and called on to "resist" him (James 4:7). Christ redeems his
people from "him that had the power of death, that is, the devil"
(Hebrews 2:14). Satan has the "power of death," not as lord, but
simply as executioner1.

Who are demons?

We know that demons are fallen angels who serve Satan (Revelation
12:8, 9). Demons are called evil spirits, unclean spirits, familiar
spirits, lying spirits, and angels of Satan. Since the Devil is not God,
he cannot be in all places at once, so he does most of his dirty work
through his demonic agents. Their goal is to entice, harass, torment,
enslave, cause addictions, defile, deceive, and attack the physical
body. We know that the kingdom of darkness is very well structured;
different demons have different territories and different names and
assignments attached to those names.

Are there different ranks of demons?

Yes. Demons have ranks in the spiritual world based on their
assignments. There are different spirits that control regions and
territories. In the Old Testament, Daniel’s answers to his prayers were
delayed by the prince of Persia, a strong territorial spirit operating
behind the Persian Empire (Daniel 10:12). The Apostle Paul told
Christians in Ephesus that we are fighting principalities, powers,
rulers, and spiritual hosts (Ephesians 6:12). This explains why some
regions of the world have a higher crime rate, such as murders or
violence. Even when Jesus was casting demons out of a man, the
demons begged Jesus to let them stay in that region. Those legions of
demons were cast out of the man but not out of the country. That’s
why it is so important for the local church to recognize that spiritual

7
warfare is extremely essential because much of what happens in our
communities are affected by spiritual warfare.

What types of demons are there?

Spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7). It’s a demon that causes unnatural fear
that invades your life, fear of circumstances, fear of death, fear of
driving a car, fear of people, fear of insanity, chronic timidity,
paranoia, fear of isolation, fear of failure, fear of losing a job, fear of
getting married, fear of getting sick, horrors and nightmares, etc.

Spirit of lust (Hosea 5:4) is an evil force behind pornography,

adultery, fornication, prostitution, and homosexuality. Many times
this demon brings sexual dreams and appears as a spirit-husband or
spirit-wife.

Spirit of addiction (Romans 8:15). This demon operates behind the

addiction to alcohol, drugs, smoking, gambling, and video games.
Other addictions also are attributed to this demon, such as addiction
to food, television, phone, computer, money, work, sleep, or habitual
tardiness.

Spirit of infirmity (Luke 13:11). These demons many times can cause
allergies, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, constant weakness, mental
disorders, hunchback, organ failure, nerve disorders, chronic rashes,
and fungal infections.

Spirit of pride goes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18). Pride is not

just an emotion; it can be an evil spirit. This spirit brings arrogance,
revenge, rebellion, egoism, lust for power, criticism, anger,
independence, cruelty, vainglory, and jealousy.

8
Spirit of python (Acts 16:16). His main assignment is to deceive. A
girl who once had this demon was saying everything right but under
demonic influence. Many times this spirit operates through occults
like Freemasonry, Mormonism, Scientology, secret societies, New
Age, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Eastern religions, fortune-telling, chain
letters, black and white magic, calling out the devil, hypnosis,
numerology, devil worship, water witching, levitation, iridology,
charms, ouija boards, gypsy curses, horoscopes, zodiac signs,
acupuncture, and dream catchers.

Can a Christian have a demon?

I believe a born again believer can have a demon but a demon can’t
have him. Christians can be oppressed but not possessed by the devil.
For example, my wife and I have had other people live with us in our
home for as long as I can remember. These renters were not owners
of my property. They had a room that they lived in and a common
space we occupied. They also had a key which I gave them. And that’s
how demonic oppression in a believer works. Certain demons that
influenced either previous sins before we were saved, or else recent
ones, acquired the key to certain parts of our life. Jesus is the owner.
He occupies the master suite but they can still have access to some
guest rooms. Unless you evict them and change the locks, they will
continue to come and cause torment.

When a “non-Christian” Gentile woman came to ask for the

deliverance of her daughter, Jesus said that deliverance is as
children’s bread (Matthew 15:26). Even when Jesus addressed the
Jews who believed Him, Jesus said to abide in His word (often
referred to as bread), so that they can be His disciples. Jesus

9
continued saying that we should know the truth and the truth will set
us free (John 8:31-36). When you read it in context, you will see that
He spoke to those who believed in Him.

Those who advocate that a Christian can’t have a demon have

probably never cast out a demon before. If you attempt to cast out a
demon from an unbeliever, it’s like trying to force an owner out of his
own house. Even if you do succeed by sheer force, it’s illegal, and you
will go to jail for it because the owner of the house has a right to live
there. During the exorcism, the demons will scream “this person is
mine.” You can quote all the verses you want, but if that person is not
born again, deliverance will not happen unless that person repents.
Even if by the power of the Holy Ghost you do expel the demon, it will
attack that person again unless they submit to the Lordship of Jesus.

I personally don’t pray for deliverance for non-believers unless they

repent and receive Jesus. What’s the point? So that the demons will
return and bring more demons with them (Matthew 12:43-45)? If
they don’t want Christ but just relief from torment, I remind them
that the greatest miracle is salvation and Jesus wants to be their
Savior and Lord. If they don’t want Him, then this torment is just an
appetizer of what hell will be like. It sounds brutal, but it’s true.

How can a demon and the Holy Spirit live in the same
person?
We are triune beings with spirit, soul, and body 1 Thessalonians 5:23
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and
may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” . When we get saved, it’s our spirit
that was saved, not our soul. Our spirit is saved but our soul is being

10
saved. Our soul is the place where the renewing of the mind happens,
healing from hurts and wounds occurs, and deliverance takes place.
That’s why it’s possible for a believer to have sin, hurt, wounds, wrong
thinking, and demonic influence in their soul, and still have the Holy
Spirit.

If Christians can have demons, why does the Bible say,

“light and darkness can’t exist together”?
Actually the Bible doesn’t say that. The Scripture that people refer to
when they misquote the Bible is this one: “Do not be unequally yoked
together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness
with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?”
(2 Corinthians 6:14). This verse does not say light and darkness
cannot coexist. It says they should not exist together. Paul is telling us
the way things should be, not what they cannot be. Paul first states,
“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers” and then
discusses how darkness and light should not have any fellowship
together. If darkness and light cannot coexist, then Christians cannot
date unbelievers. We know that this happens all of the time. It should
not, but it does. The same thing happens with demonized Christians.
They should not be under this demonic influence, but nowhere in the
Bible does it say that this is not possible.

If you have a demon, does that mean you won’t go to

heaven?
A Christian can have a demon, but a demon can’t have a Christian. A
born again believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). We
are going to heaven on the basis of Jesus’ grace, not our righteous
deeds. Jesus’ righteousness leads to holy living and His grace is not
an excuse to live in sin but the power to overcome it. When we are
born again, our spirit is saved but our soul is being saved and our
body will be saved. None of us will reach the state of perfection in our
soul; it’s continuous growth. Therefore, I believe a person can go to
heaven being poor, sick and even in torment but he can’t go to heaven
without Jesus. So, the real question is, did this person get saved, not
is the person being attacked by demons?

We go to heaven because our spirit has been saved, but more of

heaven comes to us as our soul is being renewed daily. And one day
our body will be saved, totally made new by resurrection. The New
Testament word for salvation is sozo which means to save, to deliver,
to protect, to preserve, and to rescue from danger. Sozo is not just
forgiveness of sins as mentioned in Matthew 1:21: “For He will save
His people from their sins” (the word used in this context for save is
sozo). But also, in Matthew 9:22: “And the woman was made well
from that hour” (the word used in this context for made well is also
sozo). As in Luke 8:36: “They also who had seen it told them by what
means he who had been demon-possessed was healed” (the word for
healed is sozo). From this we can see that salvation (sozo) goes from
the spirit to the soul and even to healing of the body. We are going to
heaven on the basis of our spirit being made new and becoming one
with Jesus. We are saved by believing in Jesus and confessing Him as
Lord, but at the same time we are being saved in our soul---that is

12
sanctification, and one day we will be saved in our body--- that is
glorification.

Are demons behind suicidal thoughts?

Yes. The thief comes to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). Satan
“was a murderer from the beginning” (John 8:44). A person
struggling with constant intrusive thoughts of suicide needs
deliverance.

We encourage people who were delivered from the “demon of death”

to continue to receive counseling and in some cases even seek mental
health specialists. When the demon-possessed man was freed by
Jesus, he not only had demons but also had a mental illness.

“Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to
Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had
departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right
mind. And they were afraid. They also who had seen it told
them by what means he who had been demon-possessed was
healed” (Luke 8:35, 36).

Demons departed from the man, but he was also restored to his right
mind. Deliverance and healing took place. Those who came, saw him
as healed, not just delivered. That is what usually happens during
deliverance. Physical healing can take place as well. I have seen this
happen many times that when a person gets freed, they also get
healed physically. Keep in mind your brain is a physical organ.

There are cases when deliverance doesn’t bring healing. A person is

freed from demons but they still need to continue to walk in faith and
take proper steps to see the restoration of their mental state.

13
Therefore, we encourage people who are delivered but have had
abuse, trauma, or suicidal tendencies to see a professional counselor.
In our church, we even have a fund dedicated to helping our members
receive professional help.

It’s true that you can’t counsel a demon, but also, not every mental
illness is treated with exorcism.

If a person commits suicide will they go to hell?

This is a very difficult topic. There is a theological debate about this
subject, but the topic becomes different when someone in your family,
who struggles with demonic torment, takes his own life or dies by
overdose. There are cases of suicides in the Bible: Saul intentionally
fell on his sword, Samson pulled the temple down on himself,
Ahithophel strangled himself and Judas hung himself. All these
people are seen in a very negative light in the Bible.

Prophet Elijah prayed "It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am
no better than my fathers!” (1 Kings 19:4). And the apostle Paul told
the Corinthians that his trials were so difficult that he "despaired
even of life" (2 Corinthians 1:8).

Suicide is a sin because it involves taking your own life. But this sin is
not an unpardonable sin. Jesus’ death on the cross took care of every
sin---past, present, and future. It doesn’t give me an excuse to sin; the
opposite is the case. It gives me the freedom to overcome the power of
sin. If Jesus’ sacrifice covers my sin, the sin of taking my own life is no
different than any other sin. It’s horrible and heartbreaking, but not
unforgivable.

14
What happens if the person taking their own life didn’t have time to
confess their sin? We are not in a place to know that; therefore, we
can’t make those judgments. Also, most people who die by suicide had
a previous mental issue as well as the devil’s grip over their life. They
die because they aren’t thinking clearly and suffering from
excruciating emotional pain. They feel that death will end that pain.

“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take
credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the
good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it”
(Ephesians 2:8, 9 New Living Translation). These are comforting
verses for those who are born again, following Jesus, and yet they
wrestle with certain habits, struggle with affliction, experience
torment and never experience complete victory. They die in that
struggle. I don’t believe in universal salvation or that you can live as
you want to and still go to heaven. Paul referred to believers who built
their Christian life using poor material, which was burned in the end,
but they themselves remained saved. “If anyone’s work is burned, he
will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire” (1
Corinthians 3:15).

At the moment of our death, very few of us will be able to be

completely perfect in our thoughts, motives, behavior, and attitude.
Our salvation doesn’t hinge on making sure all things are confessed
before we die; our salvation is in Christ, not in our confession.
Confession is important. Repentance is vital, but Jesus is the giver of
eternal life.

I believe God is bigger than our sins and mistakes. Because of Christ,
we do not need to live in constant fear of losing our salvation.
Although a person is able to walk away from Christ, renounce his
salvation and forfeit his place in heaven, those who are children of
God can set their hearts at rest with no condemnation, “For if our

15
heart condemns, God is greater than our heart and knows all things”
(1 John 3:20).

My goal is not to encourage those struggling with whether or not it’s

okay to take your life but to let you know there is total freedom in
Jesus. Don’t look to death as your deliverance; look to Christ. Seek
deliverance while here on earth, not in death. Get help; seek out a
counselor or a professional specialist. As long as there is breath in
you, there is hope for better days. The devil lies by saying that the
world would be a better place without us and that death will stop all
the pain. Yes, suicide stops the pain for the individual, but it will pass
all that pain onto everyone who truly loves and cares about that
individual.

10

Do I have a demon if I have nightmares?

The answer is yes and no. Many people who have demons usually
have bad dreams and after deliverance, the attacks in the dreams
disappear. The enemy loves to attack us while we sleep using
nightmares, horror dreams, or snakes, and spiders appearing in
dreams. It’s the work of Satan---his goal is to rob our peace and
power. “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares
among the wheat and went his way” (Matthew 13:25).

With that said, I don’t believe you can receive a demon through sleep.
Nor do I believe that you can get saved in your sleep, even if you do
see Jesus in a dream. For example, God showed up to kings like
Abimelech, Pharaoh, and Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, but it didn’t
mean that they got in right standing with God via a dream. Our
relationship with God is built on our faith while in our conscious
state. Being attacked in a dream is not a sign that you have demons.

16
But the enemy loves to use nightmares to bring confusion and fear
into our life so that when we are in our conscious state, we give him
that open door to traumatize us.

If you are attacked regularly in your sleep, you need deliverance. If it’s
not frequent, exercise dominion over it. When Samson went to sleep,
Delilah cut his hair off. Compare it to Jacob. When he went to sleep,
God visited him in a dream. Samson lost his hair while sleeping;
Jacob got a revelation while sleeping. One was sleeping on the rock,
the other on the lap of Delilah. The question we have to ask ourselves
is what “pillow” do we put our mind on before going to sleep? The lap
of Delilah (compromise, bad tv shows, movies, music) or the Rock of
Ages (worship, scripture, fellowship with believers)?

Before you go to sleep, read the Scriptures instead of being on your

phone or watching TV. Meditate on the Word of God before you fall
asleep. Commit your night to the Lord in prayer and praise. If you
wake up with a nightmare, rebuke it right away. You can pray
something like this, “In the name of Jesus, I rebuke this attack of the
devil. I don’t accept this dream as reality. I believe in what God says
about me. I am covered by the blood of Jesus.” Something as simple
as this prayer will stop the nightmares from coming back. Avoid
filling yourself with junk during the day (ungodly influences from
music, movies, or bad company). What you do during the day does
affect your dreams. If night terrors continue, seek prayer from your
group leader or pastor to help you overcome the bad dreams.

11

What is a spiritual spouse?

A spiritual husband or spiritual wife, as you have probably heard of
during deliverances, are demons that attack through dreams

17
imagining sexual relations with a person. At times, this demon gets so
ingrained in a person’s subconscious that they have kids in the spirit
realm. In the dream, they have a totally separate life with another
person who is actually a demon taking the place of a spouse. Sex in
dreams is one of the main demonic operations that cause sexual
immorality in a person’s life. This demon is behind pornography,
masturbation, homosexuality, and prostitution. These spiritual
spouses cause confusion in the home and are also known to be the
cause of infertility. I have prayed for people who were oppressed by
these demons and after deliverance, they were free. The dreams
stopped, sexual immorality stopped and barrenness was gone.

12

What are the major open doors to demons?

The Devil is like a dog on a leash, he can only bark at Christians but
cannot bite them if they stay out of his territory. His territory is sin.
As God does nothing without faith, Satan does nothing without sin.
Sin is the ground on which the devil operates.

The occult i s a huge open door for demons. The occult includes
astrology, witchcraft, the black arts, fortune telling, black magic,
white magic, Ouija boards, spiritism, tarot cards, horoscopes, and
talking to the dead. It also involves partaking in false, deceitful
religions that directly or indirectly worship the Devil.

Bringing demonic objects into your home opens the door for the
demonic. Power flows through people, places, animals, and objects.
God used Moses’ rod, the water of Jordan, the saliva of Jesus, and
handkerchiefs and aprons to bring about supernatural miracles. Paul,
during a revival in Ephesus, had people burn occult books (Acts
19:19). Achan was destroyed for taking the accursed objects into his

18
tent (Joshua 7:11-25). Demonic objects as books on magic, charms,
dream catchers, ouija boards, tarot cards, horoscopes, etc. bring
demonic influence into a person’s life and home.

Demons can gain access through abuse. It’s probably the most widely
open door for the demonic in the west---abuse. Demons enter
through abuse, trauma, rejection, rape, and molestation. Abuse
creates inner hurts and bitterness in people.

Generational curses are another way that demons are passed on to a

person. In the first chapter, I addressed the issue that some of us are
fighting battles that were passed on to us. It can be that parents were
devoted or dedicated to the devil and that a curse got passed on to the
child. If the child was conceived as a bastard child, the demon of
rejection could have entered it in the womb. Or parents took kids to a
“native doctor” or “witch doctor” to bring healing or to reveal the
future and that child was marked by the devil. All these are potential
doors for demonic intrusion.

Words spoken can open the doors to demons. The power of life and
death is in the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). Curses pronounced by those
in authority can release demonic influence on a person’s life. This
includes self-imposed curses that we place on ourselves by constantly
calling ourselves bad words and negative confession.

Illicit sexual encounters can open doors for demons. S ex is not just a
physical act; it is a spiritual matter that affects the soul, which is the
center of your mind, will, and emotions. An individual becomes one
flesh with another individual when they have sex (1 Corinthians 6:16).
Condoms can protect from sexual disease but not from sexual
demons. Demons can be transferred from one person to another
through one sexual act. I have heard plenty of testimonies of people,
who were in the kingdom of darkness, who were assigned by the devil
to recruit as many people as possible by having sex with them.
Viewing pornography also opens doors to demons. Most people who

19
view porn get a demon; they know that because an evil spirit enters
them. That’s what happened to me. I needed deliverance from the
demon of pornography.

Committing an abortion. When we commit injustice against others, it

also brings a curse (Deuteronomy 27:18, 19). Cain was under a curse
after he murdered his brother (Genesis 4:11, 12). Abortion is nothing
less than murder, and it brings a curse. It’s premeditated. I have
previously ministered to people who became possessed by demons
after having an abortion. When we take someone’s innocent life,
especially when they are so helpless, it opens our lives to the demonic.

Stealing and perjury are other open doors to demonic curses. “ ‘I will
send out the curse,’ says the Lord of hosts; ‘It shall enter the house of
the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name. It
shall remain in the midst of his house and consume it, with its timber
and stones’ ’” (Zechariah 5:4). Stealing is a sin because it breaks one
of God’s commandments. It also opens doors for curses upon our
entire household. Judas was a disciple of Jesus, yet he was a thief.
Thievery led to demonic possession and to Judas’ eventual
destruction by suicide. If we have people who work for us, and we do
not pay them a fair wage but grow rich from their labor, then a curse
will enter our house and consume our lives. Robbery, burglary,
identity theft, stealing from the office, taking intellectual property,
illegally downloading content, and shoplifting are some acts of
sowing, which will result in reaping many curses. Those who stole, for
example, men like Achan, Gehazi, Judas, and the thieves on the cross,
all suffered a curse for their actions---but Jesus wants to forgive
thieves and break the power of this curse over their lives. Jesus was
crucified between two thieves; one had the curse broken and received
salvation, and the other kept his curse and died without breaking it
over his life.

13

How can you know if you have a demon?

There are a few ways to know.

One way is through the gift of discerning of spirits. One of the gifts of
the Holy Spirit is the gift of discernment. The operation of that gift is
the discerning of the spirit world, including demonic spirits. A person
walking in that gift “can see” whether you have a demon or not.

The second way is a manifestation t hat happens when prayer is

offered. Laying on of hands by anointed servants of God works like an
X-ray machine, it exposes demons---it makes them manifest.

Thirdly, you can know if you have demons by the strange activities of
demons in your life. For example, the man who was demon-possessed
in the Bible exhibited very abnormal behaviors---he lived in the
cemetery, walked naked, fought people, and broke chains (Mark
5:3-5; Luke 8:27, 29). That’s not normal. When your life begins to
have signs of abnormal behaviors, it might be a sign to seek
deliverance. If being demonized means that demons control a part of
your life, usually it is very easy to identify that part; it’s the part you
have no control over. At times people say things like I lost control of
my temper. If that happens all the time, it is most likely that the spirit
of anger is in control. You need deliverance from that.

14

Can demons enter animals?

If God used a donkey to speak to a prophet, demons can use animals
as their vehicles to bring death and destruction. Demons can enter

21
animals because they are spirits looking for physical bodies. Their
main goal is to possess human bodies, but if need be, they will settle
for animal bodies.

“So all the demons begged Him, saying, ‘Send us to the swine,
that we may enter them.’ And at once Jesus gave them
permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the
swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran
violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the
sea” ( Mark 5:12, 13).

All creation including human beings has a self-preservation instinct

to care for themselves and keep themselves from danger. Even
animals have this self-preservation mode. But we see that when
demons entered pigs, they self-destroyed.

15

What is the difference between curses and demons?

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed
Me...to proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the
prison to those who are bound” ( Isaiah 61:1). Earlier, the prophet
Isaiah said that the anointing breaks the yoke (Isaiah 10:27). The
power of the Holy Spirit brings liberty to the captives and opens the
prisons of those who are bound.

Captives and prisoners are two sides of the same coin of bondage.
Demons make the person a captive slave. Curses put a person into an
invisible prison. Curses are different from demons.

22
Revelation 12:9 states in more simple terms that demons are the
angels that were cast out of heaven with the devil. A curse is a
negative pronouncement that affects some areas of a person’s life.

16

What is a curse?
A curse is like a dark shadow from the past that’s affecting our daily
life. It’s like a chain that holds us back from going where we want to
go. Today, because of the original sin of disobedience, we live in a
cursed world (Genesis 3:17). Although the curse is everywhere in the
world, it can land on a person’s life directly if they open their life to it.
Every curse has an original cause. Just like birds of the air fly
everywhere, but they don’t build their nest everywhere, so it is with
curses (Proverbs 26:2). We live in a cursed world, but when we
commit particular sins, we open our life for that curse to land and
remain on us. The word “curse” occurs nearly two hundred times in
Scripture.

17

What are the sources for curses?

God Himself. God declared a curse on those who would curse

Abraham (Genesis 12:3). God also pronounced twelve curses for
breaking the law of Moses (Deuteronomy 27:15–26).

Men on behalf of God. Joshua cursed Jericho (Joshua 6:26). Elisha

23
cursed Gehazi who deceptively took goods from Naaman (2 Kings
5:26, 27). Jesus cursed the fig tree (Mark 11:12–14, 20, 21).

Parental authorities in the home. A father or mother (or

grandparents in some societies) can pronounce a curse or blessing
over a child. Noah cursed his son Ham but pronounced a blessing
over Shem and Japheth (Genesis 9:25, 26). Husbands can also
pronounce curses over their wives.

ebekah took a curse upon herself when

Self-imposed curses. R
convincing Jacob to steal the birthright (Genesis 27:11, 13). Also,
when Jesus was on the cross, Jews pronounced a curse on themselves
and their future generations (Matthew 27:24, 25).

Satanic agents. The Moabite king Balak hired the prophet Balaam to
curse Israel so that Moab could defeat them in war (Numbers 22:4–6,
12). A witch or witch doctor can pronounce a curse on a person, but
that curse can’t stick to that person if they are walking with the Lord
(Proverbs 26:2).

18

What are the open doors for curses?

Idolatry, false gods, and the occult ( Deuteronomy 27:15). When we
worship idols we open our lives to the demonic.

Disrespect for parents (Deuteronomy 27:16). Honoring our parents

brings blessings from the Lord (Ephesians 6:2). The opposite is also
true; dishonor brings curses. We see when Ham disrespected his
drunk father Noah, he received a curse from his father for his
improper behavior, which in today’s world could be easily justified,
but at that time was condemned, (Genesis 9:20-27).

24
Injustice to the weak and helpless (Deuteronomy 27:18, 19). Hurting
the weak, widows, and orphans opens the door to curses. This is
especially true when a person has an abortion. Since abortion is
killing an innocent child, this barbaric act goes along with the nature
of the devil who came “to kill, steal, and destroy.” When they commit
an abortion, they manifest his character and invite his evil power to
ruin their lives. That’s why many people who hurt the helpless will
have strong depression or suicidal thoughts, and the spirit of murder
plagues them unless they repent and renounce that sin.

Illicit or unnatural sex, incest (Deuteronomy 27:20-23). God created

sex to be between a man and a woman, to be enjoyed only in the
institution of marriage. When sex goes outside of marriage it brings
guilt, hurt, and demonic attacks. Condoms can protect you from
sexual diseases but not from the demons that come through illicit,
immoral sex. The demonic world of the occult uses unlicensed sex as
a means of receiving more controlling power from demons. People
can be initiated into the kingdom of darkness by having sex with
someone who belongs to that wicked dark kingdom.

Anti-semitism (Genesis 12:3; 27:9). God mentioned from the

beginning that blessing Abraham brings blessing and cursing him or
his descendants brings a curse. Hating the Jewish nation opens the
door for demonic spirits. Let’s not forget that all the authors of the
Bible were Jewish, our Messiah was born to Jewish parents, lived in
Israel, and is returning to that country. Respecting the Jews sets us
up for a blessing. Anti-Semitism opens the door for curses.

Stealing and perjury (Zechariah 5:1-4). Satan is a thief; his work is

the work of stealing. When we steal anything, we open the doors of
our finances to demons. The foundation of our financial success will
have cracks in it if we build our life on stealing. Robbery, burglary,
shoplifting, identity theft, stealing from the office---all these open the
doors to demons to attack our prosperity. Judas was a good example

25
of a thief who dipped into the community purse of the disciples;
through stealing he opened the door to demons (Luke 22:3).

Stinginess toward God ( Malachi 3:8-10). It’s very clear that we are
under a curse when we withhold our tithe. When we live in
generosity, we model God’s blessing and attract more of His blessing
upon our lives. Tithing causes God to rebuke the devourer---the
devil---for our sake. Neglecting to tithe allows that devourer to roam
free. That’s why God is asking us to BRING our tithes, not to GIVE
our tithes. To bring them means they are not ours, they belong to
God.

19

What types of curses are there?

There are three types of curses: the generational curse, the spoken
curse, and the earned curse.

Generational curses are passed down from generation to generation

with the same problems and troubles coming down through the
bloodline.

Spoken curses can come into your life through inappropriate actions
you do that cause people to speak a curse over your life, or when you
curse yourself or others.

Earned curses c ome into your life through practicing the occult or
willfully sinning. Any unbroken curse you bring into your life will turn
into a generational curse. This is why deliverance is very important
for every Christian.

26
20

What are some of the signs of curses?

Common signs of curses are chronic diseases, phobias, and fears,
premature death, loneliness, divorce and infertility, poverty and lack,
being accident-prone, cycles of limitations, misfortunes, etc.

21

What’s the difference between a character flaw and

demonic oppression?
We must understand that we are fighting three enemies
simultaneously: the devil (invisible enemy), the flesh (inward enemy),
and the world (visible enemy). The spiritual enemy, the devil, is
overcome by repentance, renouncing, resistance, and/or deliverance.
The inward enemy, our flesh, is overcome by crucifixion, self-denial,
or in other words personal discipline. The world is the ungodly
organized system controlled by the devil which operates through
people who are opposed to God. This enemy is overcome by fleeing.
We are told not to love the world (1 John 2:15-17), or as the psalmist
says, “...Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in
the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful” (Psalms 1:1).

You can’t cast out the flesh and crucify the devil. When a demon has
control of a part of your life it will affect your character by creating
dysfunction in that area. Usually, the area that demons control is the
area you do not control. For example, anger. When you become
angry, you lose control over your temper, or with pornography, you
lose control over your eyes.

27
Demons are cast out through deliverance. Once you are delivered, you
get control back, but deliverance alone doesn’t fix your character or
lifestyle. Character is a result of taking responsibility for your actions
by remaining in the Holy Spirit and that character is called the fruit of
the Spirit. The fruit is developed slowly and naturally.

An example is illustrated in King David’s life when “Satan stood up

against Israel, and moved David to number Israel” (1 Chronicles
21:1). The devil prompted David to do something not good and David
did it. It brought the judgment of God upon him and Israel. When the
prophet Gad came to rebuke David, his response was one of humility
which revealed good character in him. “And David said to Gad, ‘I am
in great distress. Please let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for His
mercies are very great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man’ ”
(1 Chronicles 21:13).

When David saw the angel of the Lord punishing the people, he fell on
his face and wept. He took responsibility for his actions and the
consequences; he didn’t blame the devil. He went on to offer up an
offering and refused to do it for free. David was a man of character
and principle. Getting delivered doesn’t fix your character, your
blame game, rebellious attitude, pride, or greed. All these need to be
regularly crucified since they are works of the flesh. You can’t cast
them out; you have to crucify them.

Compare Adam and David. Both men were moved by the devil to
commit sin. But Adam blamed his wife; David took responsibility.
Adam lost paradise; David remained a king.

22

Why do people manifest during deliverance?

When the Holy Spirit fills a person, glory can be seen in their face.
There is peace, joy, and love that is visible. Sometimes people who
spend time in God’s glory would have their face shine or others would
see them as the face of an angel. Spiritual manifestations are real.

Demonic manifestations are very common, especially in the presence

of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. At times when Jesus showed up at
the Synagogue, a demon in a person would manifest. Common
manifestations of demons are displayed when a person begins to hiss
like a snake or even crawl on the floor or mimic wild animal sounds
and actions, shaking of the hands or sharp pain in the body. I have
seen a person’s eyes roll upward or flutter swiftly. I remember the
first time I saw a demon in the eyes of a person. I can’t explain it but
their eyes changed. “The light of the body is the eye...if your eye is
bad, your whole body will be full of darkness” ( Matthew 6:22, 23).
Sometimes even the skin color of the person changes. At times, a
person full of demons starts laughing or speaking in an unknown
utterance.

Other common manifestations during deliverance include coughing

and vomiting. Not all demons come out the same way; some people
cry them out, others breathe them out and some shake and vomit
them out. We don’t seek manifestations, but we aren’t afraid of them
either. When the anointing shows up, the demons will react; you can
count on that.

29
23

Do I have to manifest to be delivered?

Some people would argue that if you don’t manifest and the demon
doesn’t speak through you when interviewed, then you’re not truly
delivered. Jesus said, “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free
indeed” (John 8:36). Deliverance is one of the works of the Holy
Spirit, and the Holy Spirit does as God wills. Therefore, it is not
possible to say why some people who receive deliverance manifest
wildly and others do not, even though both unquestionably are
delivered and changed. This is why it is important for ministers of
God to be filled and led by the Holy Spirit in order to work with God’s
people. They must not do merely the physical side of what is meant to
be a spiritual operation, like the seven sons of Sceva tried to do in
Acts 13.

The anointing of the Holy Spirit brings about deliverance, not

manifestation. The Holy Spirit is the invisible power behind
deliverance. “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the
kingdom of God has come upon you” ( Matthew 12:28).

Manifestations of evil spirits are a physical reaction to something that

is happening in the spirit realm. We do not often see anything
physically leave the person’s body during a deliverance, even though
the evil spirit is definitely removed. Hence, a manifestation is a sign
that something beyond the ordinary is happening in the spirit realm
in a person’s life. Equally, it is not a demon’s will to manifest. They
want to remain undisclosed in the dark. It is the power of the Holy
Spirit which forces the demons to manifest during deliverance. When
the delivering power of God is not present, demons can continue to
hide in the people they are tormenting.

30
Manifestation is a powerful sign during deliverance. Especially when
the demon leaves, there is usually a change in a person’s demeanor.
“Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of
him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, ‘He is dead’. But
Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose” (Mark
9:26). Usually, after deliverance, the person collapses and doesn’t
remember what happened to him. They feel as light as a feather and
testify that something left them. Others recall some of their
experiences or sensations of heat, electricity, or power during the
deliverance process.

I don’t believe that you have to manifest to be free, though. Don’t

make a mistake of comparing your deliverance to somebody else’s. A
little boy was delivered, and there was a manifestation (Mark
9:14-29). The woman who got freed from the spirit of infirmity didn’t
make manifestations, or at least it’s not mentioned. “Immediately
she was made straight and glorified God” (Luke 13:12, 13).

24

Why do you speak to demons during deliverance?

There are a few things we must keep in mind. In the Bible, we are
commanded to cast out demons and that requires speaking to them.
To be clear, we are not encouraged to have conversations with
demons. But, during deliverance, at times we ask questions like,
“Who are you?” “What have you done to this person?” “How did you
enter this person?” These are not conversational questions, these are
interrogation questions of inquiry.

Some have claimed that while doing public deliverance, interrogating

a demon glorifies the devil and embarrasses the person. On the
contrary, we have found that deliverance embarrasses the devil,

31
builds people’s faith, and instills God’s fear in this new generation.
Jesus did not exclude deliverances from any of the Gospels nor did He
perform them privately. He did not do them for a show, but to glorify
God and bring help to those who were struggling.

With that being said, here are a few of the reasons for interrogating
demons as we and others do. Jesus did it. M ark 5:8-9 states: “For He
said to him, ‘Come out of the man, unclean spirit!’ T
 hen He asked
him, ‘What is your name?’ ” Jesus told the demon to come out of him
and then asked the question, “What is your name?” And the demon
answered. The demon’s answer didn’t indicate that it lied about the
information. This is the only mention of Jesus asking that question,
but with the vast number of deliverances that Jesus performed, I am
sure that it’s not the only time that He questioned a demon. Even if it
did happen only once, His example in no way prohibits us from doing
that.

If a demon obeys and responds to you about its name, then it

acknowledges your authority as a follower of Christ. Acts 19:15 states:
“And the evil spirit answered and said, ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I
know; but who are you?’ ” T he sons of Sceva tried to follow Paul’s
pattern of casting out demons without being born again and without
being filled with the Holy Spirit. They tried to cast it out in the name
of Jesus that Paul preaches. The demons responded that they did not
respect the sons of Sceva and injured them because they did not
personally know Jesus who gives authority over demonic spirits. I
have witnessed many times during deliverance when demons have
said things like, “You can’t cast me out,” “You’re too small,” “You
don’t have enough anointing,” “This person is mine,” or, “They belong
to me.” It’s similar to when Goliath tried to intimidate David by
calling him a little boy (1 Samuel 17:42). All these are the devil’s
attempts to diminish our confidence in Jesus. We don’t cast out

32
demons by our own power but by the power of Jesus’ mighty name
and the Holy Spirit’s anointing.

If you ask the right questions, demons reveal other demons. M ark 5:9
says, “Then He asked him, ‘’What is your name?’’ And he answered,
saying, ‘My name is Legion; for we are many.’ ” A t times, there are
other demons that are hiding, and interrogation helps us to expose
and expel them as well. We must not rely on information from the
demons but revelation from the Holy Spirit. His gift of discernment of
spirits is available to us when we are doing deliverance. But at times,
we can do what Jesus did and command the demon to reveal his
name, number, and nature.

Interrogating a demon can help the person who is receiving freedom

to close doors and not sin again. When you find out how the demon
entered, it can help that person to close all open doors to the enemy
and avoid committing those same sins again.

When demonic plans are revealed, people are warned. For example,
God told Gideon to go to the enemy’s camp and listen to what they
were saying (Judges 7:10, 11). God’s Word and directions should have
been enough for Gideon, but God wanted Gideon to hear the same
message from his enemy.

25

Is everything that a demon says true?

Speaking of satan Jesus said, “When he speaks a lie, he speaks from
his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it” ( John 8:44).
Demons are always lying and deceiving by nature. It’s true. We can’t
trust what demons say; therefore, we command them in the name of
Jesus to tell the truth during deliverance.

33
In the two famous instances when demons spoke in the Gospels,
namely the demoniac of Gadarenes (Mark 5:1-20) and the man in the
synagogue (Mark 1:23-26), the demons were forced to speak the truth
by the power of the Holy Spirit. Following Paul and Silas for many
days, even the demon-possessed slave girl with a spirit of divination
cried out truthfully saying, “These men are the servants of the Most
High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation” (Acts 16:17).
Most of us would be grateful for such good publicity, but Paul had the
discernment to know that behind such a “truth” were demonic spirits.
Nevertheless, the girl filled with a spirit of divination was not lying.
But, when a demonic manifestation does take place, it’s usually not
because the demons want to show up, rather, it is the superior power
of the Holy Spirit exposing the powers of darkness in a person’s life.

During deliverance, we rely on the Holy Spirit, the gift of

discernment, prayer, and listening to what God is saying, as well as
learning from previous experiences and using common sense on how
much of the information we accept from the demon.

What we do stay away from are the rabbit trails that demons want to
take us on by talking about nonsense and wasting our time. Seeking
supernatural revelation and extra spiritual knowledge from demons is
an unreliable territory. Jesus is the Truth, and the Holy Spirit is the
Spirit of Truth; demons are liars. The only information we ask of
demons pertains to a person’s total deliverance, thus closing every
legal right that the demon might have had.

26

Can there be many demons in one person?

A person can have many demons. Jesus cast out seven demons from
Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9). A legion (a thousand) of demons lived

34
in one person (Mark 5:9). Spirits don’t have space and size, nor are
they physical entities; therefore, many can fit into one person.

Usually, there is more than one demon in a person. Demons seldom

operate alone. The demons who possessed the man in the synagogue,
screamed, “...Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of
Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the
Holy One of God!” (Mark 1:24). See the “leave us alone” and “You
came to destroy us”. Usually, one demon is the gatekeeper who brings
in other demons (Matthew 12:45). For example, bitterness brings on
rage. The demon of hate brings a spirit of murder. When you open the
door to one demon, that demon will open the door to other demons of
its kind.

27

How do I know that I am free?

When the demon is cast out, sometimes the person ministering to
you, through the gift of discernment, will declare you free even before
you feel free. Take that by faith! It is like when you pray the sinner's
prayer, and then based on God’s Word, you are declared forgiven. You
take that by faith without consulting your feelings.

Most commonly, those delivered feel a change in their hearts. Upon

interviewing hundreds if not thousands of people who have gone
through deliverance---the most common change is that they feel
peace in their heart, relief, joy, and a deeper love for Jesus and their
neighbor.

For some, intrusive thoughts are eliminated and they can finally think
for themselves. For others---and this is also a big one---they can

35
finally decide by themselves to say “no” to a certain destructive
behavior.

For example, someone shared a testimony that before their

deliverance, they couldn’t control their overwhelming desire for
fornication. It was like a primitive impulse that needed to be fed, and
all intellectual restraint would be shut off until the sexual craving was
satisfied. However, after the deliverance, they were able to say “no”
and control their impulses. The willpower was given back to them.
They were back in the driver’s seat again, not “riding shotgun” in their
life any longer.

On the other hand, some people don’t feel any different right away
and just have to take it by faith that when the Lord sets you free, you
are free indeed (John 8:36). In the same way, we do not have the Holy
Spirit because of a feeling or emotional experience but because God’s
Word plainly indicates so. There is, therefore, no need for any
physical reaction or experience when an evil spirit is delivered out of a
person, and lack of physical experience or feeling does not mean that
deliverance did not take place and the evil spirit was not cast out.

Generally speaking, the bigger the demonic strongholds in a person’s

life, the bigger the change after the deliverance.

28

Why do I still manifest after I was delivered?

There are several different ways of receiving deliverance. Some people
receive it instantly at one event and everything is cast out. Others go
through a long process of deliverance as some people have more
intricate demonic issues. You can liken it to a hospital visit. Someone
who has appendicitis goes through a pretty straightforward surgical

36
procedure while someone with a brain tumor would need a more
intricate surgery and possibly more surgeries over a period of time to
completely remove the cancerous mass. This is because the mass is
intertwined with the person's body. In the same way, demons can also
be intertwined with a person's mind, emotions, physical body,
behavior, and attitudes.

Sometimes after the first deliverance session, a person who needs

more deliverance may still experience manifestations until the whole
process is completely finished. Others who may have had demons
attached to them for a long time and have gotten so used to the
feeling of the manifestations, that even though after the demons are
gone, it’s a comfort issue to willingly fall back into the same dramatic
behavior that always happened when prayed for. In such cases, that
person needs to be counseled that he is truly free and no longer needs
to behave in such ways because it does not glorify Jesus for all that He
has done in his life.

29

Can I experience self-deliverance?

Deliverance like healing can be experienced without someone praying
for you individually. A person can even receive the most precious gift
of salvation without a preacher. Though it’s very helpful to have
someone minister to you, you can experience deliverance through
someone praying for you over a video, telephone, or through a book.

Deliverance from demonic powers happens through the Name of

Jesus, the Blood of Jesus, the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit. These
mighty weapons are available to all believers.

37
These are a few steps that can help you to experience self-deliverance:
Recognize that there is a demonic activity or an open door.
Repent: confess your faith in Christ; confess any known sins; forgive
anyone who sinned against you.
Renounce all contact with the devil and the occult. Throw away any
demonically dedicated items.
Release yourself in the name of Jesus.
Resist the devil who will seek to gain control again.
Replace whatever the Lord has delivered you from with God’s Word.
Renew your mind in your new identity in Christ.

30

Can demons come back?

Demons will come back into a person after receiving deliverance if the
emptiness they leave behind isn’t filled with something else more
powerful. It is extremely important for us, after having received
deliverance, that we fill that void with the abiding presence of the
Holy Spirit and God’s Word. Normally after receiving deliverance, a
person will experience an empty feeling inside but, as wonderful as
that relief may be for the first time in a long time, that emptiness
should not remain. It needs to be filled with the living Word of God in
order to prevent any further demonic influence. Surround yourself
with God’s people, seek out a mentor, listen to video-sermons, and
join a life group in the church.

When Israel left Egypt, Pharaoh pursued them. Nonetheless, they

proceeded forward with God; pharaoh and his entire army drowned.
Their winning secret was that they refused to return to Egypt but
marched forward into the promised land, and the same applies to us.
Demons try to come back, but we must not return to our old ways

38
which would permit them entrance, but rather we are to walk forward
with God.

This does not however mean that you will never experience another
attack. Being attacked by demons and being controlled by demons are
two different things. An attack is a sign that you are on the right track.
Control, however, means you are under their influence.

So, the real question is not whether demons will come back into your
life to bother you again, but rather will you allow them even partial
control of your life? Will you live like a totally victorious overcomer
in Christ Jesus?

31

What role does soul healing play in deliverance?

As stated earlier, sometimes deliverance becomes a process in a
person’s life that takes more than one quick prayer to rid the mind,
body, and soul of all the toxicity that years of demonic influence and
oppression may have caused.

Many times, there are particular traumatic events that may have
catapulted a demonic power into a person’s life such as sexual abuse,
rape, or molestation in the early years. These awful things may cause
demons to enter right away, depending on the intentions of the
person performing these malicious immoral acts, or in other cases,
they can cause demons to enter gradually due to unforgiveness and
bitterness in the victim’s heart.

Our soul, which is our emotional life and willpower, can be ripped
open and wounded terribly from such situations, or even by situations
that may not be as extreme. What hurts or doesn’t hurt you does not
depend on the occurrence itself, but depends on you. Deliverance

39
does not automatically heal your soul wounds. Your soul may have
been deeply hurt repeatedly and a deliverance may have taken place,
but because the soul is so badly wounded, it needs to undergo
profound healing in order to enjoy a satisfying Christian life. This will
include much soul searching, repentance, releasing forgiveness,
breaking bondages from generations back, curses in our lineage, and
so on.

Once the soul is released from the bondage of unforgiveness and

offenses, demonic forces lose their strong grip on a person’s life.

A person can be delivered without the healing of the soul. For some of
us who have experienced traumatic events, especially during the
formative years of childhood, it is especially important to find total
healing for our soul so that the power of the demonic strongholds are
removed since they thrive in wounds, hurts, offenses, bitterness, and
unforgiveness.

32

What is the difference between demons and

strongholds?
The strongman is an evil spirit that plunders a person’s peace, joy,
finances, and health (Matthew 12:29). We must bind the strongman
in order to get freedom from him. The strongman is a demon and a
stronghold is a house of wrong thoughts. Our weapons are powerful
for binding the strongman and for breaking down strongholds (2 Cor.
10:4).
Demons come quickly and usually exit at the same speed. Strongholds
are built up over time and get torn down over time. The Devil is not
only interested in ruining your life but also in building a mindset in

40
you so that even when he is gone, you will still live in defeat as though
he were still there.
A stronghold is a house the devil builds up in your mind. It is the
house for the strongman. That’s why deliverance is both “if the Son
makes you free” (John 8:36, 32) that speaks of deliverance from the
demon and “you shall know the truth” that speaks of freedom from
strongholds. Deliverance from demons is by the anointing of God, but
freedom from strongholds comes by you knowing the truth and
renewing your mind.

33

Are demons behind every sickness?

Demons are behind illnesses whether directly or indirectly. “Who
went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the
devil” (Acts 10:38). Jesus healed those oppressed by the devil. But,
nowhere in the New Testament do we see that Jesus “prayed” for the
sick. He only rebuked sicknesses, even an ordinary head fever (Luke
4:39). Jesus also commanded a certain woman to be free from back
issues that had troubled her for eighteen years (Luke 13:12).

It doesn’t mean that if someone has a sickness that they necessarily

have a demon. Nor does God give sicknesses to people; otherwise, the
Bible wouldn’t say that the sick were oppressed by the devil. If God
gave sicknesses to people, then Jesus contradicted God’s will by
removing what God gave people.

Jesus did not pray for healing, He simply healed people. On many
occasions, He spoke to the demon behind the sickness and cast it out,
and the person was healed. I have seen many illnesses being healed
after a person was delivered.

41
34

Is mental illness demonic?

The issue of disorders and demons is very complicated. It’s a very
sensitive issue when one of your family members has a mental illness.
Demons can cause those disorders, but sometimes it’s just a physical
problem that needs healing and medical treatment. I have seen the
deliverance of a man named John who had four mental disorders, and
after deliverance, God healed him totally from all of them. Jesus
delivered a man who had a legion of demons, and afterward, he was
also healed. But, that doesn’t mean that every mental illness has a
demon behind it. We as a church shouldn’t abandon people with a
mental illness by equating mental illness only with the work of
demons, or suggesting that the mental disorder was the result of
personal sin. Though there is an example of Nebuchadnezzar where
God used mental illness as a chastisement, we must not generalize his
example for everybody.

Dr. Steven Waterhouse in his book, Strength For His People, says the
following: “The Bible itself makes a distinction between disease and
possession” (Mark 6:13). Thus, Christian theology should recognize
the difference. At least six factors differentiate schizophrenia from
demonic possession as described in the Bible.
1. Attraction to Religion vs. Aversion to Religion. D emons want
nothing to do with Christ. Conversely, people with mental illness are
often devoutly religious.
2. Irrational Speech vs. Rational Speech. In New Testament accounts
involving demons, the demons spoke in a rational manner. Untreated
people with schizophrenia will often speak nonsense and jump
rapidly between unrelated topics.
3. Ordinary Learning vs. Supernatural Knowledge. Demons in the

42
New Testament would speak through people to convey knowledge
that otherwise could not have been known to the possessed
individuals. Those with mental illness have no such ability to know
facts that they have not acquired by normal learning.
4. Normal vs. Occult Phenomena. There is an aspect to demon
activity that is just plain spooky (e.g., poltergeists, levitations, trances,
telepathy). These have an impact on others in the room, not for just
the possessed. With schizophrenia, the effect of the disorder affects
only the disordered, not others.
5. The claim to be possessed. Authors who have clinical experience
both with demon possession and mental illness believe those who
claim to be possessed are very likely not possessed. Demons wish to
be secretive and do not voluntarily claim to be present.
6. Effects of Therapy. If prayer solves the problem, then it was
probably not schizophrenia. If medicine helps alleviate the problem, it
was not demon possession.2

We pray for deliverance for those coming for deliverance if they have
a mental illness, but we do encourage them to seek medical help after
the deliverance even if the mental illness is gone. Some people
experience a breakdown in their minds due to the usage of powerful
prescription drugs; they need supernatural healing for their brain.

Is yoga dangerous?
"Should Christians stay away from yoga because of its demonic
roots?" asked megachurch pastor Mark Driscoll. "Totally. Yoga is

demonic. If you just sign up for a little yoga class, you're signing up
for a little demon class."3

The former Vatican chief exorcist agrees as well that yoga is demonic.
"Practicing yoga is Satanic, it leads to evil just like reading Harry
Potter," Father Gabriele Amorth said in 2011. His objection: Yoga
derives from Hinduism, a heathen religion which teaches that there is
reincarnation. Pope John Paul II in 1989 also warned against the
dangers of yoga as a seduction of spiritual seekers that "can
degenerate into a cult of the body."4

Bob Larson, the world’s foremost expert on cults, the occult, and the
supernatural said, “Yoga, in Sanskrit, the ancient language of
Hinduism, means "union with god," small "g." Its purpose is to bend
the body into many forms to master the mind and soul of the
practitioner. Quite literally, yoga's goal is to tune the body to the
Universal Mind and thereby achieve god-consciousness and attain
oneness with the universe. At least that's what they've been doing for
thousands of years in India regardless of whatever some ignorant
Christians in America may call their brand of Holy Yoga.”5

In reading studies of people who have more knowledge and degrees

than the rest of us, I noticed that many of these people come to the
same conclusion that practicing yoga opens the door to the demonic. I
agree with them. There is nothing wrong with stretching and
breathing exercises. I myself am committed to a healthier lifestyle by
exercising and eating better, but doing yoga stretches or going to hot
yoga classes are like going to demon classes.

What is the difference between Eastern meditations and

Biblical meditation?
The Bible mentions meditation twenty-three times; nineteen of them
appear in the Psalms. David, a man after God’s heart, knew the power
of meditation. He wrote more about that topic than any other author
in the Bible. Meditation has become very popular in our culture but
it’s not the same as the meditation described in the Scriptures. Here
are a few differences:

Eastern meditation empties the mind. Christian meditation fills the

mind.

Eastern meditation is detachment. Christian meditation is an

attachment to God.

Eastern meditation is passive. Christian meditation is aggressive.

Eastern meditation is demonic. Christian meditation is Holy

Spirit-filled and inspired.

Why is deliverance not practiced today in churches?

First of all, just because the church doesn’t do deliverance on the
stage or post a video on YouTube, it doesn’t mean that deliverances
don’t happen there.

45
I believe that every church has to be a 4x4 church. By 4x4, I refer to
four main values that the church should have:

Passionate prayer: the church is a house of prayer. Prayer prepares

the atmosphere for the anointing in which demons can’t stay.
Churches that don’t see deliverances are usually churches not praying
and fasting.

A heart for evangelism: this is huge because when lost people get
saved, usually deliverance follows. Churches that don’t see
deliverances might be those where no lost people are getting saved.

The expectation of the miraculous: we create services where miracles

are expected, instead of creating sermons to explain a lack of
miracles. We need to add to our services: praying for the sick, sharing
testimonies, and coming with a mindset that the impossible will
happen today.

A confrontation of the demonic causes deliverance to happen. Some

are scared of doing spiritual warfare in the church service. I think
prayers at church need to have a part where demons are confronted
beforehand, and those who are designated to that specific prayer need
to be trained and equipped.

When Apostle Paul put the bundles of sticks together to start a

bonfire on the island, a viper came out. When we build a fire, snakes
come out. Our goal is to build a fire, not to look for the snakes. Fire
exposes and expels snakes. Also, the fear of God must be stronger in
our hearts than the fear of people. Many times ministers are afraid to
teach deliverance because of the opinions of people. For those
ministers, I have to remind you that King Saul lost his crown because
he refused to destroy God’s enemy. Walking in the Holy Spirit causes
us to walk in the fear of God. Without the anointing, we live in the
fear of men. Hollywood is not afraid of what the culture will think of
them when producing all kinds of junk to put in our theatres that

46
highlight witchcraft and the supernatural. People are hungry for the
supernatural, but the church is scared of what people will think. We
should obey Jesus to cast out demons, not live to please people. One
more thing is that if we are always quick to criticize deliverance
ministries, we will not walk in the deliverance anointing. If you attack
anointing, you will not attract anointing. You may not agree with or
understand some ministers who do deliverance, but please refrain
from attacking and criticizing them. Instead, find those who do it
right and learn from them.

How do I overcome pornography?

I am asked this question more than any other question from both
guys and girls. I struggled with this myself, so I pray that God will use
this to help you find freedom and hope.

A year before immigrating to the United States, when I was around

twelve years of age, I was first exposed to pornography. I never
thought about it again until one day while I was housesitting for the
neighbors after having arrived in America, I was exposed to it again,
but this time I became attracted to it and then enslaved by it. This
bondage continued for a few years through my adolescence. We are
exhorted to “lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily
ensnares us” (Hebrews 12:1). Pornography is one of those sins that so
easily ensnares. Jesus said, “whoever commits sin is a slave of sin”
(John 8:34).

I realized that making promises to myself like “I will never do this

again” only resulted in doing it even more. I learned that sin grows in
the dark, so I went and confessed my struggles to my pastor. I had to
“embarrass” that sin so that I could be free. James 5:16 says, “confess

47
your sins to each other…so that you may be healed”. However, even
after the confession, I fell again and again. I would feel an
overwhelming sense of guilt and hopelessness, so I would repent to
God and beg Him for mercy. In my desperation for deliverance, I
started to fast and pray more often, knowing that God is my only
hope.

In the process of seeking God’s help for my freedom, I started to

recognize that porn is not only an issue of the flesh, but demons were
directly causing this attraction. When Delilah was seducing Samson
to reveal his secret, she was incentivized and supported by Samson’s
enemies, who in fact were in the same house waiting for his downfall.
Demons are behind porn just the way the Philistines were behind
Delilah to neutralize Samson’s strength, rendering him blind and
ruining his calling. I understood that I needed more than discipline to
be free. I was in need of deliverance and freedom.

My path to deliverance was different than that of some people I know.

I did not have someone pray for me for deliverance. I did not manifest
demons. I did not scream, yell, or roll on the floor. Ever since my
deliverance, I have seen men and women alike receive their freedom
from this affliction with manifestations. But, mine was different.
During a seven-day fast, I renounced all hidden things of shame, I
closed open doors, broke any generational curses, waged spiritual
warfare against the forces of darkness, and cast myself on the mercy
of God. It was not my sincere pleas or fasting that made all the
difference, but it was the grace of God mixed together with my
desperation and the understanding that my problem was spiritual.

The Bible says that Jesus came to “proclaim liberty to the captives”
(Isaiah 61:1) and “set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke
4:18). Some get free by proclamation, others by being “set at liberty”.
I did not go looking for open doors just for the sake of finding
demons; I was desperate for God while urgently seeking His face. He

48
led me to an understanding that there was indeed an open door in my
soul, and it must be closed by repentance and renouncing. I felt that I
had been “set at liberty” by Jesus. Yes, I believed that I was freed, but
the battle wasn’t over. My deliverance freed me from bondage to the
flesh, but that threw me into a battle. I was removed from Egypt only
to be placed on a tough journey to the Promised Land. I had to move
from my deliverance to walking in dominion.

Jesus is the greatest authority on deliverance. In His teaching about

getting free from lust and immorality, He said to “cut off the hand.”
(Matthew 5:29-30). Jesus did deliverance but He said that the
remedy for lust is strict discipline. Since lust is not just a matter of
demons but also of the flesh and the world, we must fight the issue of
porn on all three fronts. Discipline and much self-control are required
in order to walk in freedom from pornography, according to Jesus.

Of course, we know that Jesus does not want us to cut off our body
parts since that’s not where the problem lies. It is a symbolic
illustration to cut off things that cause us to sin. I call those things
“trigger points.” A hand and eye are necessary and very useful, but
they can become a trigger point for sin. Social media, friends,
television, news, social gatherings, and many other things alike can be
good, but for someone else, these good things can be used as demonic
bait for sexual sin and immorality. We need to remember that
pornography is created by the devil who is the “father of lies” and he
presents immoral fantasies and illusions through wicked pictures.
These are his deceptive lies roaming around in your mind, in your
world of imaginations. He wants you to imagine the glamor of sin but
does not show you the ugly consequences of sinning, which include
addiction and bondage to his lies.

I truly believe if you are not willing to endure harsh self-discipline

equivalent to the pain of cutting your own hand off, then you are not
all that willing to be free from lust and porn. That’s what Jesus

49
thought, anyways. Not only do we need to remove trigger points,
whether they may be the media, places, or people, we must also apply
discipline in our lives to keep our flesh “on the altar”. There are
disciplines like prayer, fasting, scripture reading, memorizing
scriptures, working out, and waking up earlier which are effective
habits to apply in our daily lives while struggling with porn. We don’t
realize how much these small disciplines can lead to a more
structured spiritual life. It has a domino effect, one leads to another.
At first, you might not see much change when you start practicing
discipline, but it has a compounding effect as well. Discipline
becomes a habit, like watching porn can become a habit. Except,
discipline is a good habit which constructs valuable results. Discipline
must be built up in your life not only to defeat the flesh but because
you cannot be Jesus’ disciple without it (Matthew 16:24).

You don’t have to have discipline to believe in Jesus; in fact, it will

cost you nothing to believe. But, it costs you everything to closely
follow Jesus. We can’t follow Him without forsaking. You can’t be a
disciple without discipline.

Remove the trigger points you have identified. If it involves social

media, deactivate it. If it’s a TV series, cut it out completely. If the
trigger point for you is too much free time in the evening, then fill
your time with godly activities for this next season of your life. The
difference between Joseph not falling into sin with Potiphar’s wife
and David committing adultery with Uriah’s wife was that Joseph
went to her house to work but David went to the balcony to relax,
instead of being at war with his men. Maybe your ex, with whom you
had sexual relations, is a strong temptation when you are weak and
desire to have sex; block that person out of your thoughts. Get an
accountability partner from your local church. Put a filter on your
computer. Develop a habit of fasting for 24 hours once a week.
Schedule 30 minutes to 1 hour of prayer every weekday. Meditate on
the scriptures daily and read through the Bible from cover to cover in

50
one year. Get in a small group. Serve at your local church. This is not
just about getting busy, but getting on the altar so that our flesh stays
dead.

39

Will I be attacked by the devil if I pray for someone

else's deliverance?
There is a teaching in traditional churches that says that if you are
going to embark on the work of spiritual warfare, there will be
repercussions and consequences for doing deliverances. The devil will
fight back. He might use accidents, depression, heaviness, and
nightmares as a way of fighting back because you are walking in
authority. I have heard people warn young believers to be careful
about doing spiritual warfare because of a possible demonic
retaliation that might result from doing such activity. I know all these
cautionary warnings sound spiritual, but they are not scriptural.
Jesus said, “. . . nothing shall by any means will hurt you” (Luke
10:19). That was a promise of protection for those who will “trample
on serpents and scorpions.” Jesus didn’t warn his disciples to watch
out for some hidden sin or weakness of character that might cause the
enemy to come and attack them. The early followers of Jesus weren’t
perfect, yet they had authority that He gave them. The only warning
that Jesus gave us was not to rejoice in our victories resulting from
our authority but to rejoice in our eternal salvation which is the
foundation of that authority.

When I was a teenager, I believed in this traditional teaching more

than I trusted in Jesus.

I remember before any big youth meeting where we would expect a

huge harvest of souls and prayer for deliverance, we would devote

51
ourselves to intense, pious prayers covering ourselves with the blood
of Jesus against attacks of the devil because of what we were about to
do. Our error was that we expected the devil to hit us back. We told
our leaders we would be causing damage to the kingdom of the devil,
and the devil wouldn’t just sit there; he would retaliate and fight us
back.

Great revivals are followed by great attacks. We used the stories of

Jesus’ temptation after his baptism at the Jordan River and Elijah’s
battle with depression after attacking the prophets of Jezebel as our
proof that the enemy will strike back at us afterward. The interesting
part is that what we expected was what happened. Sometimes before
conferences, our people would get into bad accidents like flipping
over on the highway while driving to the event, or singers would get
so sick that they would have to be admitted to the hospital, or after
the events, our team would get physically sick. All of that would
confirm to us that what we were saying was true. All those mishaps
were caused by the devil attacking in retaliation for causing damage
to his kingdom of darkness. That’s what we sincerely believed, but
that is not what Jesus promised. He said that nothing by any means
will hurt us if we trample on the enemy. Jesus’ words have to carry
more weight than traditional teaching on warfare.

Ever since we have been teaching and standing firm on what Jesus
promised. We have done more deliverances in one weekend than we
used to do in one entire year. It’s not that the enemy doesn’t try to
attack, but we are victoriously carrying an invisible shield of faith in
the spiritual world that quenches all the fiery darts of the devil
(Ephesians 6:16). If our faith is in what Jesus promises us, that faith
becomes a shield in the realm of the spirit. And if the devil decides to
attack back, the shield of faith will stop his fiery darts. Now, this
doesn’t mean that some bad times may happen to those who do walk
in authority. What I am saying is that we can’t be afraid to bravely

52
exercise the authority of Jesus or worried that the devil will fire back
and we might get wounded by his shots.

40

Can demons enter me if I am seeing someone getting

delivered or ministering deliverance to someone?
First of all, if there is an open door of sin in your life, the devil doesn’t
need to wait until you see someone being delivered to take advantage
of the open door which your sin has provided.

Secondly, if during a deliverance session demons are cast out of one

person only to go to another person in the room, does the same thing
happen during the repentance of sin? Do sins go from a repentant
sinner at the altar to some other believer sitting in pew number two?
What happens during healing? Does the illness that one person is
healed from go to another quickly? That’s not true. The Scriptures
don't support that theory nor do our experiences. Behind all this
misconception is the enemy attempting to instill fear into God’s
people to keep them from walking in the authority they have in
Christ. Being in the center of God’s will is the safest place on earth.
Preaching the gospel, healing the sick, and casting out demons is
where we all should be. That’s where God’s divine protection and
covering are and demons know that. Now it’s time for us to accept
that truth and act on it. Our God has a better protection plan than
Geico which can save you fifteen percent or more on your insurance,
but God has full protection coverage paid by the blood of Jesus.

53
41

Why does your ministry post deliverances online and

perform them in public?
Jesus’ first deliverance happened in a synagogue and in the public
view of everyone (Mark 1:21-28). Jesus did not cast the man out of the
synagogue. Instead, He cast the unclean spirit out of the man.
However, in most churches today, if a similar situation of demonic
manifestation would occur, the possessed person would more than
likely be removed from public view or be accused of seeking attention.
Jesus was not afraid to do public deliverance. He also was not afraid
that it would glorify the devil in any way or embarrass the person
receiving deliverance.
When we understand the spiritual world, we know how to attack the
demonic forces affecting an individual, while not demoralizing or
embarrassing them personally. We want to be able to validate and
uphold their true identity in Christ.

Conclusion
There was a time when God had to correct me because I wanted to
tone down my stance on spiritual warfare. I knew it was not a popular
subject with mainstream Christianity, so I felt I had to water it down.
However, the Holy Spirit reminded me of the story of King Saul who spared
the enemy God had commanded him to destroy. When King Saul chose to
be too nice to the king of Amalek, Agag, it offended God, and He became
very displeased.

I quickly repented after such a rebuke, and I renewed my decision to

not give King Agag any more protection. Satan is God’s enemy; therefore,

54
he is also my enemy. I will act as Jesus did, and I will fight as Jesus
commanded. Once we resolve this in our heart, God will be pleased and the
devil will be outraged and subsequently, many people will be freed.

People around us, who are not followers of Jesus Christ, are hungry
for the reality of the supernatural and are not afraid of it. Movies, TV
shows, songs, and books are filled with the supernatural, plunging people
into deeper darkness instead of giving answers to their spiritual pursuits.
Deliverance must return to the church, and the people of God have to have
a fear of God that is greater than the fear of men.

But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of
God has come upon you. Luke 11:20
