Care for Africa Cont ...
It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs
on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no.
The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a
commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation.
My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at
https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw
I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad
to discuss it with you.
The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown,
please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order.
I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future.

WHAT’S ON
Back for a second year, Judi is exhibiting as a Solo Panel Artist at the NZ Art Show. This year she is exhibiting six of her New Zealand and Australian
bird portraits.
Held annually in Wellington, the NZ Art Show is New Zealand’s largest sale of original New Zealand art works. It promotes a wide range of art with
the aim of encouraging all New Zealanders to own original New Zealand art. Exhibiting around 3,000 artworks by about 300 artists, attendees are
free to view and purchase art in a dynamic and stimulating environment. More than 10,000 people visit the show over the four-day show period proving
that art is for everyone.

WHAT’S ON
https://www.montsalvat.com.au/whats-on-1/2018/5/23/exhibition-julie-powell-the-dapper-rabbit
I am heavily inspired by colour and texture from the Masters; Degas, Rembrandt and
Monet, with their use of light, colour and texture to add surrealism and atmosphere, giv-
ing the viewer a glimpse into another world. I wanted to add a sense of depth and time-
lessness to the pieces in this series, and old-world charm.
The Dapper Rabbit was born from a dream and has evolved into a beloved, albeit evil
character. It’s Jack the Ripper versus Jekyll & Hyde, a no good Victorian Rabbit that meets
with a foul end. The overall tone and themes explore the darker side of human nature,
from spousal abuse, gambling, murder and revenge.

WHAT’S ON
FOREST BATHING
Forest Bathing
Forest Bathing invites the viewer along a tranquil pathway away from the other world and into the rejuvenating solace of the woods. Ambient bou-
quets of cedar, maple and moss permeate dream states long after immersion in the velvety greens.
Viki Murray’s combination of sumi ink work and photography is a response to sensory replenishment through complete absorption in nature. Her
ethereal imagery explores dream states, waking states and the spaces in between.
I went to Kyoto and Nara in 2017 with the purpose of taking pictures in ancient gardens, walkways and forests. Time spent in the primeval Kazu-
gayama Genshirin forest, Nara, was nothing short of transcendental. To be dually drained and invigorated by intense humidity, visually drinking in
the intoxicating greens of maple leaves and moss while inhaling the musky scent of cedar and damp earth was almost sensory overload. For the
longest moments time stood still as I was engulfed in a silence, heaving with the loud presence of every pore of nature. I knew then and there the
kind of images I wanted to create, the visual tale I wanted to weave. Ironically it was only once back in Australia, chatting casually in a cafe about
the cleansing beauty of the Japanese forests; that I was introduced to the term forest bathing, or Shinrin Yoku. – Viki Murray, 2018.
Viki Murray is the winner of the 2017 Outback Archies, an initiative of Outback Arts, Coonamble, NSW.

2018 AWAKE
TASMANIAN GET TOGETHER
By Dean Hohn
The end of April saw the weather gods smile on 11 Australian AWAKE members and 5 partners, who all gathered in Launceston for a 4 day Get Together.
This was the ADU Group’s 2nd Annual Get Together and I’m now wondering where it will be held in 2019? The vote still has to be carried out!
Unfortunately there weren’t any of our New Zealand members in attendance this year, but hopefully some of them will be able to make it next year. Who
knows, we might be visiting the land of the “Long White Cloud” next year!
Everyone seemed to have enjoyed their time in Tassie. Some came early and explored the state, while others stayed on after the event. We had time to
spend chatting with each other, exchanging ideas and sharing our work with one another. It made for a long day, but Sunday afternoon and evening we
were hosted at Athalie and John Taylor’s house where we were able to display our work on their TV so everyone got to see what each other has been up to
and where some of us are heading.
It was so interesting to see how each of us is doing something different based on our personal interests and goals.
On behalf of Athalie and John Taylor, my wife Marilyn Patton and myself, we all thank everyone for taking the time and making the effort to come to
Launceston and share the wonderful experience with us.

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge
Join Judi on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy, and
creative/artistic photography is where her heart is, and she hopes to encourage more photographers and photo-artists to not just stop at the perfect wild
life picture but to take it further. These weekly challenges will encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for
our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling, creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development
(technical).
She has created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New
Zealand bias!). Most challenges can be achieved with just a camera phone. Don’t worry about catching up, just jump in at the current week.

JEN MADDOCKS DESIGNS
By Trish Hoskin
This month I have been in contact with the incredibly talented Jen Maddocks from Jen Maddocks Designs.
Jen is an American Designer hailing from Colorado. A busy mum of two teenage daughters yet still manages to find time to run a very successful digital
scrapbooking design business at the same time.
Jen started her Design company back in 2008 and provides fantastic kits, tutorials and writes great fun blogs.
Jen sells her products not only on her own site but via Digital Scrapbook Studio (links below article)
I first discovered Jen’s work via our Photo Artistry group, then Awake and Kaizen where Jen is a contributor each month to the supply kits provided as part
of being a Kaizen member.
The sites provide individual kits, that include brushes and elements as well as bundles that combine all of the linked kits for a great overall themed ap-
proach with styles – modern, artsy, natural and also one of my favourites – grungy.
One area Jen specializes in is called “Bricolage”. The google translation of this being ...
(in art or literature) construction or creation from a diverse range of available things.
“the chaotic bricolage of the novel is brought together in a unifying gesture”
• something constructed or created from a diverse range of things, “bricolages of painted junk”.
42
JEN MADDOCKS DESIGNS (Cont ....)
Well I certainly would not call it “painted junk”. It absolutely fascinates me and I love having a try at it myself. The combination of layers and layers of
elements, brush work and coloured backgrounds and textures all with an overall meaning or story is a pleasure to sit and discover so many hidden
features.
Her site hosts a Bricolage challenge each month where anyone who enters can download a sample of products and create a piece and enter in the chal-
lenge. Amazing to see what people can create with the same digital elements.
Jen’s offerings are so varied from ripped frames, text stamps, industrial building images to floral and bird elements.
Her kits are themed and vary from holiday features to more mood type ideas.
It is so easy to work with her digital offerings provided with kits from our group or purchases from her it is also great that some offer beyond the “personal
use” category so that they can be included in my end designs. I love the variety offered.”
I have a fairly decent supply of her work now and prefer to split the kits up once I purchase them or receive them from Kaizen into “personal use” and then
what I can put in any pieces I may go on to sell.
Once I have a kit, I then further like to break them up into sub folders so I can mix and match especially if I am trying a “Bricolage” type piece. I have a
folder for background papers, brushes, elements, swirls and smudges and one for Kit covers where I can readily view all in my stash to remember what it
is called.
Take a visit to either of Jen’s stores and I am sure you will be as hooked as I am with her Designs and want to create immediately with them.

After many years of struggling with depression and social anxiety and their impact on my health, career, relationships and aspirations, I have found
relief in a third condition made possible by recent retirement, financial security, an understanding wife, and the internet: agoraphobia.
Having once travelled and snapshot my travel, I now remember and imagine my travels in the still quietness of my house and for the greater part find
it enough. But in truth those travels contain so much not seen; sights and sites screened by panic, so much not done; possibilities avoided due to
anxiety; so much not learned and explored; enthusiasms withered by depression. I was there. I took snapshots. But I was not there.
With sequestration secured within my house, my remembered moments simplify and merge. The too many snapshots have become a manageable
handful of motifs. Photoshop arranges the motifs and layers them in myriad ways that suggest something (illusory meaningfulness!) but always they
reduce to shapes and placement and colour and for the greater part I find it enough.
I have moved through chatter, dialogue, and then monologue. I have done the hard work to become good company for myself and the hard work to
remain good company for myself. Of course, there was and still is the hard (not always honest) work in constructing the indestructible excuses used
to avoid socialising and the elaborate persuasions used to employ others in order to fulfil the inescapable social demands of citizenship.
I did not ask to be born. I have never been completely sold on the merits of existence, but I do look for the longest path to death with the least suf
fering. Godless and stunned, I rock back and forth between awe and terror. My art is scaffolding around nothing.
Today the agoraphobe’s last outing always strengthens the agoraphobe’s agoraphobia.

In the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) release last October (2017), Adobe added a very powerful feature called Range Masking. A the same time the feature was
also added to Lightroom, so this article is equally appropriate to both ACR and Lightroom.
In ACR, you use one of three tools to make local (as opposed to global) adjustments to your image. These tools are the Adjustment Brush, the Graduated
Filter and the Radial Filter. Once you have created a local adjustment with any of these tools, you can use the Range Mask feature to refine the mask for
the local adjustment.
The Range Mask options can be found at the bottom of the tool panel when using one of the above tools, so depending on your screen real estate you may
need to scroll the panel down to find them.
Please note that the drop-down will not be active until you have used the local adjustment tool to create a mask.
To refine the mask based on colours in the image, choose Color from the Range Mask drop-down.
[Fig 1 – Colour]
62
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ..)
Use the Eye-dropper to sample colours from your image, the mask will be refined by selecting only these colours. You can click the eye-dropper to choose
a single colour point, or you can click-drag it over a larger area for a more accurate selection. Once you have chosen your first colour selection, you can
hold down the Shift key and Shift-click, or Shift-click-drag up to another four colour points (five in total).
To remove one of the eye-dropper sample points, hold down the Alt(Option) key (the eye-dropper will change to scissors) and click the sample point.
To exit colour sampling mode, click the Eye-dropper icon (to the right of the Range Mask drop-down), or press the Esc key.
The Color Range slider, decides how narrow or broad the color range selected is. Move the slider left to narrow the range (only colours very close to the
points sampled will be included), or move the slider right to broaden the range of colours selected.
Holding down the Alt (Option) key while moving the slider will give you a black and white “mask view” of your adjustment mask.
[Fig 2 – Luminance]
To exclude darker areas from your adjustment slide the left slider to the right.
To exclude lighter areas from your adjustment slide the right slider to the left.
Holding down the Alt (Option) key while moving the slider will give you a black and white “mask view” of your adjustment mask.
Summary
With any one adjustment you can only choose either Color or Luminance, not both. Don’t forget though you can make as many adjustments as you like
with the Adjustment Brush, Graduated Filter and Radial Filter, and each of these adjustments can be refined with the Range Mask option.
This is a very powerful feature that Adobe has introduced, have a play with it you will be amazed.

MIST Y MORNING
I’m lucky to have enjoyed art and photography most of my life. I fell into a job at a photography studio soon after leaving school and
had my eyes opened to the wonder of photography and dark rooms, studio work and printing. I wish now, I thought to get photos of
those amazing old machines that seemed so magical back then. For a while I thought I might become a professional photographer,
but I left to fulfil a dream and travelled overseas for a few years.
Life got in the way for a while and by the time digital photography came along I had a small family. I dabbled in altered books for a
while and found this to be creatively freeing and very satisfying. By the time I could afford a decent digital camera I was already
looking to ways to combine art with photography.
I live in a very picturesque part of New Zealand. This is where not only Lord of the Rings was filmed but also many other notable films
(Narnia, Wolverine, Willow, Top of the Lake to name a few). This means there are also many, many talented photographers both living
here and passing through on a regular basis. I wanted to make my photos stand out from others so jumped at the chance to take the
Photoshop Artistry and Awake course offered by Sebastian Michaels.
My husband and I operate a small shop in the middle of Glenorchy and we invested in a digital, direct to garment printer (DTG) as
well as a Mimaki large format printer and a lamination oven. We now print on T shirts for the tourist market, and laminate images on
glass for the local market. These glass images can be used as splash backs in kitchens, windows, shower doors or just art for the wall.
We can laminate images that are very large, 3 meters by 1.3 meters and as a result I have needed to learn how to stitch images and
work on panoramic images big enough to be used as splash backs in kitchens, which is our main focus.
At the moment I am concentrating on building a library of images for our business. These are mostly stitched landscapes. I also take
time to make my images more artistic, often rearranging the features of a landscape, or adding artistic touches even if it is just a
few birds in the sky.

CR AZY ABOUT SHOES
My love affair with photo art began when my young daughter Sophie started school and I had some precious free time. My journey began with Paint Shop
Pro and I loved learning to play around with the software and creating quirky images using different heads on different bodies and making personalised
greeting cards for friends and neighbours, which I then began to sell. I was hooked!
When we moved to New Zealand from the UK in 2000, my first job was working for an import company and part of my job included working with a camera
and Photoshop. I was in my element.
I became a mature student at AUT Auckland and studied computer Graphic Design and began a new career as a typesetter. I have always enjoyed photog-
raphy and fell in love with the work from the Awake Students and just knew that this was a journey I would like to experience. I am an artist, so I would
like to be able to combine my own artwork within Photography. I purchased the Photo Artistry course and became very excited about working through the
various challenges and I just cannot wait to enrol for the next “Awake” subscriptions which start July the first and improve on my creativity. I have to admit
that I am just a little bit or maybe as my husband Paul would say, very much so, passionately obsessed with creating Photo Art. When I am creating,
nothing else exists around me, I am in my own little bubble.
I now live in Whitianga, a beautiful town in New Zealand on the Coromandel Peninsula. I would love to be able to create artwork that I am proud to exhibit.

My love for Venice has a long history. It started before I was able to visit Venice and see by myself the beauty of this place, architecture and heritage. As
an Architect I learned at the university about this unusual place, its construction and functionality.
From the decline of the Roman Empire Venice emerged as bustling, busy place of merchants, tradesmen, artisans and artists. Venice was a city/republic
and a major regional power since the mid 11th century.
It’s said that history of Venetian Masks started with the “Venetian Carnival” which itself was a celebration of victory of the Venetian Republic over a major
commercial rival in 1162. To honour and celebrate this victory people started the tradition of a mass “party” in the central place of Venice –San Marco
Place.
For that occasion, as a cover of their identity and to facilitate public mixing of members of different highly divided members of different social classes,
people started to use masks. The Masks become forbidden by authorities at the end of the 18th century but not for long - they resurfaced in the form we
know them today just after a few years.
The Masks have some meanings, they may be just face-screens but most of them are modelled on characters from traditional Italian “Comedia dell-Arte”
eg. “Colombina”, “Pierrot”, “Jester” and many others.

BRIEF MEMORIES FROM VENICE (CONT ....)
Venice is located on many small islands connected by canals and bridges. Burano and Murano are 2 smaller islands with their own famous history. Burano
is famous for production of lace and Murano is famous for production of unusual, amazing “Venetian Glass”. Both islands are also famous for very col-
ourful architecture of the fisherman houses. History says that the reason behind the amazing colours was to facilitate an easier way of finding the right
house for thefisherman’s coming back from night fishing trips.
My love for Venice is reflected in many of my watercolour artworks of Venice and in my collection of Venetian Masks.

SELF IMAGE - DENISE McDERMOT T
I was born and raised in Victoria, BC, Canada. I originally came to Australia to work and see the country on a short term basis. I got a good job and then
decided to make a new life for myself in Sydney. I love the scenery (although you can’t beat Vancouver Island for beauty), I love the weather, and I love
the people.
I am a photographic artist, now retired from working life and living in Port Macquarie. Photography is my passion. I’ve been a photographer since I was
a teenager. My dad’s hobby was photography and he taught me what he could, including darkroom work. I didn’t like the darkroom part much so when I
came to Australia in my twenties, I switched to slide film. I was ecstatic when digital photography was invented.
In the 1980s I joined a camera club and learned to fit in with conventional ideas about photography. I had other ideas but couldn’t express them. A few
years ago while I was still working, I discovered Sebastian’s course “Photoshop Artistry”. As soon as I read the course description I knew it was exactly
what I needed. I needed the skills to bridge the gap between my photographs and the ideas in my head. I did the course over the space of a year and
then revisited some of the lessons from time to time and worked on my skills. I pored over every issue of “Living the Photo Artistic Life” and visited the
various artists’ websites for inspiration.
I was already changing my photographic life into a more artistic one. I retired. I gained a new partner who is also a photographer. I began to create more
and more artwork. I knew I wanted to move on and do the Awake course. I enrolled in January and I’m so excited each fortnight to see what Sebastian
will present.
I went through a period where I entered National and International Photographic Competitions in order to see how my photography compared with oth-
ers. Now I only enter half a dozen or so that have a Creative section. As you will have seen on other pages, I’ve had a few successes recently. Next
month my partner and two of our friends (Photoshop Artistry graduates) are having a gallery exhibition of our work and we are so looking forward to
seeing what that will bring.
As far as photography goes, I shoot everything – landscapes, portraits, studio, macro, night sky, abstract, underwater. I enjoy finding abstract images in
nature and showing the viewer what the eye doesn’t ordinarily see - such as star trails in the night sky, a butterfly stopped in flight, a long exposure of
the river water.
My work often begins with a single image and grows to explore the possibilities of a theme. I carry my notebook with me so that I can capture an idea
as life presents it to me. My work is often presented as a single image which could be used as wall art. Occasionally I produce a series to illustrate a
theme.
The other side of my work is fantasy. I like to create mythical scenes and place costumed models within those scenes. These scenes can invite the
viewer to make up a story about the images and let their imagination take over. The possibilities are endless. As Sebastian said: “Inspiration shows up
when you do”.
