OPTIMAL CHEMICALS urges the recipient of the Chemical Safety Data Sheet to study it
carefully to become aware of hazards, if any of the product involved. In the interest of safety
you should (1) notify your employees, agents and contractors of the information on this sheet,
(2) furnish a copy to each of your customers for the product, and (3) request your customer to
inform their employees and customers as well.

3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Harmful if swallowed.
Inhalation
Move person to fresh air; if effects occur, consult a physician.
Skin Contact
Wash skin with plenty of water.
Eye Contact
Flush eyes thoroughly with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses after initial 1-2
minutes and continue flushing for several additional minutes. If effects occur, consult a
physician, preferably an ophthalmologist.
Ingestion
If swallowed, induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Never give
anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical attention. If medical advice is
delayed, and if the person has swallowed a moderate volume of material (+/- 50 ml), then
give approx. 100 ml of hard liquor, such as whiskey. For children, give proportionally less
liquor, according to weight.
Note to Physician
It is estimated that the lethal dose to adults is of the order of 1.0 – 1.2 ml/kg. Diethylene glycol
produces metabolites that can cause an elevated anion-gap metabolic acidosis and renal
tubular injury. Liver injury may occur, but not as severe as kidney injury. The signs and
symptoms in diethylene glycol poisioning are those of metabolic acidosis, CNS depression
and kidney injury. Urinalysis may show albuminuria, hematuria and oxaluria.

Exposure to the vapour may cause minor transient edema of the corneal epithelium. This
condition, referred to as ‘glaucopsis’, ‘blue haze’ or ‘blue-gray haze’, produces a clurring of
vision against a general bluish haze and the appearance of halos around bright objects. The
effect disappears spontaneously within a few hours of the end of an exposure and leaves no
sequelae. Although not detrimental to the eye per se, glaucopsia predisposes an affected
individual to physical accidents and reduces the ability to undertake skilled tasks, such as
driving a motorized vehicle.
5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES
Extinguishing Media
Water fog or fine spray. Carbon dioxide. Alcohol resistant foam. Dry chemical fire
extinguishers.
Protection of Firefighters
Wear positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and protective fire fighting clothing
(includes fire fighting helmet, coat, trousers, boots and gloves).
Environmental Precautions
Contain liquid to prevent contamination of soil, surface water or ground water.

Methods of Cleaning Up
Small spills: Cover and soak up with a suitable absorbent material.
Large spills: Contain with dike. Pump into suitable and properly labelled containers.
Storage
Store containers tightly closed in a well ventilated area. Store in accordance with good
industrial practices. Storage information may be obtained by calling OPTIMAL CHEMICALS
Sales or Customer Service Representative.
Engineering Controls
Provide general and/or local exhaust ventilation to control airborne levels below the exposure
guidelines. Use good housekeeping and acceptable industrial engineering practices.
- Skin Protection
Use protective clothing chemically resistant to this material. Selection of specific items such
as face shield, gloves, boots, apron, or full body-suit will depend on operation. Remove
contaminated clothing immediately, wash skin area with soap and water, and launder clothing
before reuse or dispose of properly. If hands are cut or scratched, use gloves chemically
resistant to this material even for brief exposures. When handling hot material, protect skin
from thermal burns as well as from skin absorption. Eye fountain and safety shower should be
located in immediate work area.
- Eye/Face Protection
Use safety glasses.
Conditions to Avoid
Excessive heat.
WARNING: Do not mix this product with nitrites or other nitrosating agents because a
nitrosamine may be formed. Nitrosamines may cause cancer.
Materials to Avoid
Normally unreactive. However, avoid strong bases at high temperatures, strong acids, strong
oxidizing agents and materials reactive with hydroxyl compounds.
Hazardous polymerization
Will not occur.
- Skin Contact
Prolonged skin contact is unlikely to result in absorption of harmful amounts. The LD50 for
skin absorption in rabbits is 13'300 mg/kg. Repeated skin contact may result in absorption of
harmful amounts. Massive contact with damaged skin or with material sufficiently hot to burn
skin may result in absorption of potentialy lethal amounts.
- Inhalation
At room temperature, vapours are minimal due to low vapour pressure. If material is heated or
mist produced, concentrations may be attained that are sufficient to cause irritation and other
effects.

Irritation
- Skin
Prolonged or repeated exposure is not likely to cause significant skin irritation.
- Eyes
Essentially non-irritating to eyes.
Developmental/Reproductive Effects
Diethylene glycol has caused toxicity to the fetus and some birth defects at maternally toxic,
high doses in animals. Other animal studies have not reported birth defects even at much
higher doses that caused severe maternal toxicity. Did not interfere with reproduction in
animal studies except at very high doses.
Mutagenicity
In vitro mutagenicity studies were negative. Animal mutagenicity studies were negative.
Carcinogenicity
Diethylene glycol has been tested for carcinogenicity in animal studies and is not believed to
pose a carcinogenic risk to man.
Other Information
Repeated excessive exposures may cause effects on: Gastrointestinal tract. Kidney. Liver.
Signs and symptoms of excessive exposure may be central nervous system effects.
Symptoms of excessive exposure may be anesthetic or narcotic effects; dizziness and
drowsiness may be observed. May cause nausea or vomiting. Observations in animals
include formation of bladder stones after repeated oral doses of diethylene glycol. Reports of
kidney failure and death in burn patients suggest that diethylene glycol may have been a
factor. The use of topical applications containing this material may not be appropriate in
severely burned patients or individuals with impaired renal function.
Degradation
Biodegradation reached in Closed Bottle Test after 20 days: 58.28 %. Material is expected to
be readily biodegradable in Closed Bottle Test in 28 days. Biodegradation is expected to be
achieveable in a wastewater treatment plant. Inhibitory concentration (IC50) in OECD
Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test (OECD Test No. 209) is >1000 mg/L.
Aquatic Toxicity
Acute LC50s for fish are in the range of >100-32000 mg/L. Acute LC50 for water flea Daphnia
magna is >100 mg/L. Material is not classified as dangerous to aquatic organisms
(LC50/EC50/IC50 greater than 100 mg/L in most sensitive species).
