My part of the written exam has 5 sections:

1. Listening comprehension - 10 points

2. Vocabulary - 10 points

3. Grammar - 10 points

4. Translation sentences - 10 points

5. Writing (description of a graph) - 10 points

Part 1 Listening comprehension

I will read a text on an economic subject which contains 15 blank spaces. As I read you must fill in
the blanks. I will read the text twice. During the reading I suggest that you write your answers on
the question paper and transfer them to the answer sheet afterwards.

Here is an sample text. The correct version can be found on the final page of this document.

Part 2 Vocabulary

This section consists of 10 sentences in which you have to insert the correct word or expression, or
simply give the English translation of an Italian term. Sometimes the initial letter of the word is
given, sometimes not, depending on the difficulty.

Examples:

1. The term m ___________ t ______________ refers to work which requires little skill and,
by some, might be seen as degrading.
(Correct answer: menial tasks)

2. The English for studio di fattibilità is _____________________________________

(Correct answer: feasibility study)

The focus will be on the specific vocabulary of economics and business contained in the units of the
textbook covered during course and in any other materials provided during lessons (e.g. listening
texts).

Section 3 Grammar

This section contains 10 multiple-choice grammar questions. Example:

1. Our boss said that by the end of the year they ………….. a number of junior staff to more
senior positions.
a. have promoted b. will be promoting c. promoted d. will have promoted
(Correct answer: d. will have promoted)

In my part of the exam you will ONLY be tested on the content of the grammar sections in the
units of “Business Partner” that we cover during the course. The “lettorato” part of the course –
with Dott.ssa Varuzza or Dott.ssa Dougherty – includes a review of grammar up to a low-B2 level
and you will be tested on this in their part of the exam.

Section 4 Translation sentences

During the course, after completing each unit in the textbook, I will give you 10 sentences to
translate from Italian into English. The intention of this exercise is to consolidate your knowledge
of the important lexis and structures of each unit. You will normally do these translations at home
and we will correct them together in class.
Of the total 50 sentences, you will have to translate 5 during the exam. I am aware that this exercise
is somewhat mechanical, but learning new vocabulary by heart has always been an important part of
language learning.

Example:

Quando mi hanno aumentato lo stipendio sono riuscito a ripagare il prestito fatto per
comprare la macchina e a trasferirmi in una casa più grande.

Correct translation:

When I got a pay (salary) increase (rise/raise) I managed (was able) to pay off my car
loan and move to (into) a bigger home (house).

Section 4 Writing

For this section you will have to write an accurate description of a graph representing, for example,
the sales or energy costs of a company over a 12-month period. You should use the past tense, show
a knowledge of appropriate verbs, adverbs and adjectives, and write approximately 100 words.

Useful materials for this exercise are provided in a separate file called “Writing task – Lingua
inglese 1”

opportunity to start to (5) quantify this surge."
Britain's Chancellor has said that the UK leaving the European Union will
kill off “tens of thousands” in the (6) financial services industry. George
