VI. Learning Experiences

A. INTRODUCTION
A. 1

What do you see in the pictures?

What happens to ice cubes when they are placed in a glass of juice?
Will juice taste good after two days in open air?
A.2
What similarities did you observe among materials that float or sink?
What similarities did you observe among the materials that absorb water?

B. DEVELOPMENT

Matter is any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume.
It is anything that that has mass and volume

Mass is the amount of matter in an object

Volume is the amount of space that matter occupies

Some materials may sink or float and other may absorb water it is because of the other properties of
matter. Matter has other properties aside from mass and volume
:

OTHER PROPERTIES OF MATTER:

Ability to float and sink

Matter may float or sink on water. Materials that are lighter or less dense than water will float on it.
Materials that are heavier or denser than water will sink in it.

Ability to absorb water and other liquids

Materials can either absorb water and other liquids or not

To absorb means to “ take up or soak up liquids.”

Ability to undergo Decay

Some materials undergo decay. Anything that has life eventually dies and decay
To decay means to “ decompose or break down into other materials.”
