VI. Learning Experiences

A. INTRODUCTION
A. 1

What do you see in the pictures?

A.2
As you have learned from the previous lesson, different materials have different properties.
Can any of these things decay? Are there any that can be recycled?
How can these materials affect you and your environment?
B. DEVELOPMENT

Biodegradable Materials
 Biodegradable materials are materials that come from natural sources. They are
materials that decompose fast and easily, taking only days or weeks.
 Water, soil, and decomposing bacteria cause them to decompose
 When these materials decompose, they can be used to produce biogas, which is a source
of fuel. They can also be used as fertilizers and compost.
What are other materials that can be decompose or undergo decay?

Nonbiodegradable materials
 Unlike biodegradable materials, nonbiodegradable materials are man- made and do not
decay easily.
 Rubber, glass, metals, plastics, electronic parts, and medical wastes are example of non
biodegradable materials
 Most people prefer to use nonbiodegradable materials because they are readily available,
convenient to use, and sturdier.they are also disposable
 However, throwing them away can be harmful to the environment because most of them
contain chemicals that can harm organisms.
 Not all nonbiodegradable materials are wastes. Some of them can be reused.

Harmful Effects of Biodegradable and Nonbiodegradable Materials on

Human Health and the Environment

They can make you sick

 Biodegradable wastes attract plenty of disease- causing bacteria
 Nonbiodegradable wastes can also end up in your body and make you sick.

They decrease Earth’s resources

 Both biodegradable and nonbiodegradable wastes that are dumped in water forms might
contaminate the water and make them unsafe for use.
 Contamination will decrease the amount of water that you can drink to survive.

They contribute to global warming

 When biodegradable wastes decompose, they release a gas called methane.Methane traps
heat and stays in the atmosphere for 100 years.
 Nonbiodegradable wastes will release large amounts of these toxins into the atmosphere. As
these gases and toxins trap more and more heat, the temperature in the atmosphere
increases.
 Too much heat can make you easily dehydrated and more prone to heat stroke
 The harmful effects of too much on the environment can affect the composition and the natural
processes in different ecosystem.
Limiting the Harmful Effects of Biodegradable and Nonbiodegradable Materials

 When buying items, look for those that have biodegradable packaging

because they are eco-friendly
 Use cloth when you can (cloth bags )
 Instead of using plastic or aluminum foil, use glass containers or jars with
lids to store leftovers.
 Instead of buying sachets of shampoo, toothpaste, and deodorants, buy
them by bottle or tube. Buy the large packages and store them properly
 Instead of disposable batteries, use rechargeable ones which can be
charge many times.
 Switch to biodradable products only if they can be used more than once.

Example: Between a paper plate and a plastic one, which could be better to use?

C. ASSIMILATION
Answer the following questions.
1. What are biodegadable and non biodegradable materials?
2.What are the different harmful effects of biodegradable and non biodegradable materials on human
health and environment?
3. What will you do to limit the harmful effects of biodegradable and nonbiodegradable materials?
