What is It
BEAR IN MIND!

Some changes in the materials have harmful effects to the

environment. It may pollute land, water and air. These changes affect the
living and non-living things as they interact with one another in the
environment.

Our Mother Nature is now experiencing the harmful effects of the

changes in the materials we use and consume every day.

Changes in the Materials Harmful effects to the environment

Smoke and toxin from burning tires

are released to air which contributes
to global warming and air pollution.

Burning old tire

Burning of plastics releases
poisonous chemicals that makes the
air polluted and that may cause lung
cancer and other respiratory
diseases.

Burning of plastics

Detergents used for washing clothes

contain toxic substances that can
pollute water and can kill living
organisms in the water like fishes
and water plants.
Washing of clothes in the river.

Garbage dumped in river, ocean and

creeks will pollute the water and may
serve as breeding place of pests.

Dumping of garbage in the

water

When land is dumped with garbage,

the land becomes polluted. Pests
that carry germs flourished in
polluted land hence dangerous to
humans’ health.
Dumping garbage on land
It affects the quality of air that we
breathe. It causes rapid change in
temperature. Rain level is severely
affected and soil erosion. Many
forest animals lose their habitats
because of deforestation.
Cutting down of trees

There is a great way to stop Earth’s destruction and it is to conserve

its resources and save our environment.
The following are some of the ways to prevent or minimize the
harmful effects of the changes in the materials into the environment:

a. Be responsible citizen. Practice the 5R’s (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,

Repair and Rot) at home.

a.1 Reduce – to buy and consume products which you only

needed the most.

a.2 Reuse – to use materials at home that are reusable like

container for storage, used paper can be used as scratch,
worn-out tires as fence for plants.

a.3 Recycle –items that can be made again into another

material (old newspaper to tissue or paper again).

a.4 Repair – appliances and equipment that have a slight

damage can be fix by electrician or in a shop.

a.5 Rot – Compose of biodegradable materials mix in the soil

that can be use as fertilizer to plants.

b. Follow the strict implementation of your city in waste management.

Separate the biodegradable, non-biodegradable and toxic
materials.
c. If you have space at your backyard, plant fruit trees or any
vegetables. You can also tell your parents to teach you how to plant
and regrow plants.

d. Never throw your garbage anywhere particularly in the streets or in

the river.

e. Keep your surrounding clean and plant more trees.

*Make it a habit to help our environment safe

What I Can Do

A. Let’s do a project this time. We will make a recyclable pot for our
plants at home. Come on kids, gather now your materials and follow
the instruction below.

Activity: Project Sagip Basura – Recycled Pots

Objective

In this activity, you will make a pot using recyclable materials. Instead
of throwing them away you can use this as a pot for your plants and
vegetables at home.
Materials Needed
Scissor
Plastic bottle (1.5 soft drink, mineral bottle and etc)
Seedlings/ flower plant
Optional (Paint or pintura)

Procedure
1. First, clean all the bottles you have collected above.

2. Next, prepare your scissor and cut the bottle into two. Please ask
an adult to help you so as to avoid cutting your hands.

3. Then, use a pentel pen/ball pen to form a pattern of petals just like
a real flower. Cut it out into four/five parts.

4. After that, make a small hole at the center and drill at least five
holes on the bottom of the other half of the bottle.
5. Lastly, put the flower to the hole of the other bottle. You can also
use paints (optional only) to color or design your pot. Fill up the
recycled flower pot with soil and place your
seedlings/vegetable/flowers into the soil.

Wow! finally you made it. You have now your own recyclable pots
using plastic bottles.

Note: Make sure you water your plants kids.
