LEARNING ACTIVITY
IN
SCIENCE 4
Introduction: Every object around you has certain properties which help you identify it from all the rest. But
some properties are common to all and some are not. An object’s properties tell what the object is.
I. EXPLORE:
Pre-Assessment:
Direction: Identify the following pictures whether they absorb water, float, sink or undergo decay. Write
(ABSORB, FLOAT, SINK, DECAY) inside the box.
II. FIRM-UP
The materials that we see around us exist in different forms: solids, liquids, or gases. Like other materials, solids
have different characteristics or properties such as size, shape, color, texture and others. The solid materials
could also undergo changes when exposed to certain conditions such as temperature or when mixed with other
materials.
PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
POROSITY
What is porosity? Porosity is the ability of a material to absorb liquid. The cotton ball, paper, and face towel are
porous materials since they can absorb or suck up liquid.
DENSITY
Another way of grouping materials around is according to whether they will sink in or float on water. The
density of the material will determine whether it will sink in or float on water. Density is the quantity of matter
per unit volume.
BIODEGRADABILITY
Biodegradability is the ability of a material to decay easily or quickly. An object is said to be biodegradable if it
decays or rots easily or quickly. Fruit peelings, leaves of plants, and other materials that basically come from
living things are examples of biodegradable materials.
In disposing your trash, it is a good practice to segregate instead of to throw them together in just one bin.
III. DEEPEN
Activity 1:
Direction: Put a check on the blank before each number if it absorbs water and cross if it does not absorb water.
1._______ 2. ________ 3. ________ 4. ________ 5. ________
Activity 2:
Direction: Put a check on the blank before each number if the picture undergoes decay and put a cross mark if
not.
II. Direction: Read and understand the following questions. Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your
answer on the space provided before each number.
Unit 1: Matter
Unit Topic: Effects of Decaying Materials to One’s Health and Safety
Unit Standards:
Content Standard: The learners demonstrate understanding of grouping different
materials based on their properties.
Performance Standard: The learners should be able to recognize and practice proper
handling of products.
Most Essential Learning Competencies:
Identify the effects of decaying materials to one’s health and safety.
Learning Targets: The learners should be able to identify the effects of decaying materials to
one’s health and safety.
Value Focus: Responsibility
Introduction:
Decaying materials are things that are rotten and it can decompose because of bacterias that it absorbs or it has.
These materials can cause several effects to human health and safety if not disposed properly.
I. EXPLORE
Pre-Assessment:
Imagine all these decaying materials were not disposed properly. What do you think will happen to us if all
these decaying materials will be disposed anywhere in our community?

II. FIRM-UP
Decaying materials have good effects. When plants and animals die, their bodies start to decay. Eventually, the
decayed material will combine with soil. Soil that is enriched with organic matter is fertile and is a very good
source of nutrients for growing plants.
Decaying materials, however, have harmful effects. What are these unsafe effects?
3. Garbage or decaying matter is very ugly to look at and give off an unpleasant
smell.
5. Decaying materials can cause cholera. It is a serious bacterial disease that can
cause severe diarrhea and dehydration.
III. DEEPEN
Activity 1:
Direction: Fill in the blanks with the correct word. Choose your answer inside the box.
1. Decaying materials become breeding ground for ____________ and other _______________ that may
cause diseases such as stomach ache and diarrhea.
2. ___________ dumped on streets also has numerous decaying materials which can also be a __________
place for harmful animals such as rats, houseflies, and cockroaches.
3. Garbage or decaying matter is very __________ to look at and give off a _______________ smell.
4. Decaying materials causes _____________ when not disposed properly. Pollution is an action or process
that makes our air, water and soil ________ and not safe to use.
5. Decaying materials can cause ___________. It is a serious bacterial disease that can cause severe
diarrhea and ________________.
Activity 2:
Direction: Inside the box, draw what will our community look like if decayed materials can’t be disposed
properly. Color your work.
IV. TRANSFER
Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if not.
_________1. Throwing away decayed materials anywhere is okay for it can fertile the soil.
_________2. Garbage dumped on streets also has numerous decaying materials which can also be a propagation
place for harmful animals such as rats, houseflies, and cockroaches.
_________3. Decaying materials can cause cholera. It is a serious bacterial disease that can cause severe
diarrhea and dehydration.
_________4. Decaying materials can cause cholera. It is a serious bacterial disease that can cause severe
diarrhea and rehydration.
_________5. Garbage or decaying matter is very ugly to look at and give off a pleasant smell.
