LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO:_____1_____

Name of Learner:____________________________________________________
Learning Area and Grade Level SCIENCE -5
Reference Module: Quarter 1, Week 1 to 2
Date:________________

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT:
Everything around us is matter. They have different properties that make them
unique. These properties of matter make them good materials for producing useful
products while others have properties that make them harmful. Materials are said to be
Useful when it serve its purpose. A Material is considered harmful when it brings harm
to your health, environment and other organisms when not used properly.

The physical properties of the material are:

Brittleness is the ability to break easily

Conductivity is the ability to let heat and electricity pass through
Elasticity is the ability to return to original shape or size after being stretched, pressed,
or squeezed together
Flexibility is the ability of a material to be bent without breaking
Hardness is the ability to be rigid and resist pressure
Malleability is the ability to be flatten into thin sheets by hammering
Porosity is the ability of a material to absorb liquid
Ductility is the ability to be drawn out (as into a wire)

The Chemical properties of materials are:

Biodegradabilty is the ability of a material to decompose

Flammability is the ability of a material to ignite or catch fire easily
Combustibility is the ability of a material to burn

Today, you will learn some concepts about material.

II. LEARNING SKILLS FROM MELC:

At the end of the activity, you should be able to:

1. Identify the physical and chemical characteristics/properties of materials
2.Classify the materials whether they are useful or harmful
3.Practice precautionary measures in handling materials

III. ACTIVITIES:
ACTIVITY 1: Identifying Properties of Materials

Give the property of the materials below:

_________1.glass ____________6. rubber band

_________2.Wood ____________7. paper
_________3.Gold ____________8. flower vase
________ 4.Towel ___________ 9. tie wire
_________5,Gasoline __________10. stainless spoon

ACTIVITY 2: Classifying Household Materials

What to do:
1, Examine the pictures of sample materials below.
2, Identify the material used for the product.
3, Classify it as useful or harmful by putting a check on the proper column. (If the
material is useful and harmful, check both columns).
Number 1 is done as an example.

PICTURE OF MATERIAL USED USEFUL HARMFUL

PRODUCTS FOR THE PRODUCT

plastic

Flower pots

Rubbing Alxohol

Throw Pillows
Toilet Cleaner

Cap

Bleach

Notebooks

Eyeglasses
Knives

Disinfectant

Jar

ACTIVITY 3: HANDLING THE MATERIALS PROPERLY

Draw a happy face on the blank if the statement show proper handling of
materials and a sad face if not.

_________1. The five year old child is playing with the knife.
_________2. Mother put the disinfectant inside the hanging cabinet.
_________3. Liza placed the lighted candle near the curtain.
_________4. The kitchen essentials such as salt, sugar, and other seasonings are
properly labeled.
_________5. Used batteries were disposed properly.

Congratulations for finishing the activities! Did you get all the correct answers? Good
job. If you didn’t, don’t feel sad. There are more activities for you to perform in the next
lesson.
IV. REFLECTION:

Based on the activities you performed, what are the properties of useful materials?
Harmful materials? _____________________________________________________________________________
Why is there a need to know the proper usage and disposal of these materials?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
When do w say that the material is useful?__________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
When is the material considered harmful?____________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Remember:
Different household materials have their specific physical and chemical properties.
These properties of the material will determine their usefulness. A certain material may
pose danger or be harmful when mishandled. When one is combined with the other,
they may cause damage and harmful effects to humans or animals, health, and
environment.
