Research Title: Knowledge, Self Care Management and Health Practices of Hypertensive Clients in Lipa City:
Basis of a Wellness Program
Porponent: Kenneth Myro D. Garcia, RN, MAN
Research Problem: The study is designed to investigate the level of knowledge of
hypertensive clients self care management and health practices of hypertensive
clients that will serve as a basis of a wellness program.

Rationale: Hypertension is a health concern of growing prevalence world and


nationwide and is thus a concern for health care providers. Hypertension is also
controllable with interventions. Health care providers work with hypertensive
individuals to control the condition and to prevent the deleterious side effects of
uncontrolled hypertension. As the focus of the health care industry shifts from
secondary and tertiary interventions toward primary prevention and education,
hypertension is a key target because of its chronic, silent nature and its role as a
modifiable risk factor for multiple disease processes. This lends credence to the
investigation of the particulars of its prevalence, impact, and effective interventions

Purpose statement: The purpose of this phenomenological study will be to explore


the level of knowledge of hypertensive clients regarding the signs and symptoms, risk
factors and potential complications and the self care and health practices of
hypertensive clients in terms of nutrition, exercise or physical activity, medications,
Research Problem stress management and other lifestyle practices.
and Questions
Research Questions:
Central/ general: This study is focused in exploring the knowledge, self care
management and health care practices of hypertensive clients in a selected Barangay
in Lipa City, findings serve as a basis to create a wellness program.
Sub-questions:
What is the profile of the respondents in terms of: age;bgender;bcivil status;
educational attainment; occupation; monthly income; and hypertensive years?
2. What is the level of knowledge of the hypertensive clients in terms of: signs and
symptoms of hypertension; risk factors of hypertension; and potential complications of
hypertension?
3. To what extent are the self-care management and health practices of the
respondents in terms of: nutrition; exercise; medications; stress management and;
other lifestyle practices?
4. Is there a significant relationship between the level of knowledge and self care
management and health practices of hypertensive clients?

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that hypertension accounted for
4.5% of the global disease burden and attributed the increase in hypertension to
increasing contributing factors and coexisting cardiovascular risk factors such as
obesity, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and smoking. Given the large scale and
modifiable nature of the problem, it certainly warrants the attention of the health care
community. Health care professionals are knowledgeable regarding different treatment
and management modalities of hypertension but the information lacks about the realm
Background why it is still a public health concern.
The setting: District Health Centers in City of Lipa
Participants: Purposively chosen hypertensive clients based on the criteria given in
this study
Data Collection Technique: Self constructed questionnaire and focus group
discussion
Plans for analysis: Statistical treatment of data using weighted mean, Pearson
Methods Correlataion, F test and Thematic content analysis
Ethical Issues Participants in the study are given adequate information regarding the objectives,
goals purposes, benefits and harm (if any) of the study. Prospective participants are
notified the different types of data to be collected such as the demographic profile,
level of knowledge and self care and health practices regarding hypertension. During
the distribution of questionnaire the participants received inform consent form which
states that the respondents will willing to participate in the study without reservations.
Costs of the project, e.g.: Travel expenses, Salaries of staff, Accommodation,
materials and other resources needed like skills: interpreting/translation data

How long is it going to take? Identify key milestones, such as completing data
collection, analysis, report-writing, holding meetings for stakeholders.
Time scale
Possible dissemination: Report in the City Health Office of Lipa, Seminars,
Conferences; Workshops on wellness
Possible target audience: Colleges of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences; City
Health Office, Department of Health, Rural Health Units, Community – local, and more
