around the world as a first language, a second language, or a foreign language.

sectors such as government, law, and education. It also plays a role in different fields such as journalism,
film and television, and creative writing.

McCrum calls attention to the existence of many localized varieties of English in contexts where “the use
of English is no longer part of the colonial legacy but the result of decisions made since their
independence”. Examples include Indian English, South African English, and Philippine English.

Writers should know and follow the rules of Standard English. They should also use language that does
not discriminate against particular groups, whether in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, social class, age,
and disability.
