For Crafts:
Asharikandi Village, Assam

• A craft village in Dhubri district of Assam where male


and female, young and old of altogether eighty
families are always busy to shape and create a range
of fascinating terracotta and pottery items.
• NECARDO- North East Craft and Rural Development
Organisation that works for the preservation and
promotion of the traditional craft claims that
Asharikandi is one of the largest clusters of Pottery in
the North East India.
• Artistic skill, quality of Hiramati, climatic condition
and age-old tradition of potters of Asharikandi, has
enabled to retain a separate identity of Asharikandi-
style of Terracotta.

• Earlier, the needs of the Royal family for ware and


utensils of everyday-use were catered from this area
since this potter-community migrated to this place.
• Now they go out for selling their terracotta products on
the occasions like trade fair, exhibitions organized by the
various Govt. Departments and NGOs.
• Small Industries Development Bank Of India has
constructed one Office, Godown and Work-shed on 1200
Sq. ft. area on the land of the Artisans' Society to cater
the various need of the artisans.
• Assam Tourism Development Corporation Ltd have come
forward to help the craft and the craft-persons of
Asharikandi.

1. Town Square
• In 2004, the local government built a town square for peasants’
leisure on what used to be an empty piece of land along the
main road leading out of H village.
• Identified five needs that people are eager to satisfy in public
space: comfort, relaxation, engagement with the environment,
and discovery.
• During the morning and evening, some peasants go to square
to do some exercises. In the morning, there is a hockey group.
• In the evening there is a dance group, made up of elderly
women, doing traditional Chinese “Yangko” dance.
• They learned how to cooperate with other group member
during the exercises, reinforcing a sense of teamwork.

• The project aims to contribute to the empowerment
of the communities by the means of sustainability,
that strengthens and preserves their ecosystems and
their culture, benefitting their communal and social
well-being.
• Community Construction- These provide the
community with new knowledge and
practices, ensure a longer lifetime for the
structure, speed up construction time, reduce
costs considerably, and make reaching a
larger scale possible.

• The structure and the roof are built entirely with


endemic bamboo.
• The work with this material establishes a practical and
aesthetic relationship with the traditional
constructions, reinforcing the sense of belonging over
the structure and allowing the community to be
involved in the building process.
• The bases are made of metal with a concrete
foundation.
• The floor and retaining walls are built with local stone.
• It is run by groups of volunteers, social organizations,
and the community itself, making the most of the
collective brain and local knowledge.
