OSRAM SYLVANIA is the global leader in lighting systems.
The most important trend in lighting technology is the move towards systems…we started this
trend with THE SYSTEM SOLUTION®, a family of optimally balanced energy saving lamps and
ballast combinations. We are now extending that trend with LED systems for the lighting market.
LED systems are quickly becoming the light source of choice for signage applications due to their rugged-
ness, reliability, long life, energy efficiency and low maintenance requirements. They have also opened new
avenues in lighting with their colormixing and color sequencing capabilities. They offer unique capabilities
for architectural enhancements and decorative lighting due to their small sizes and system flexibility.
OSRAM SYLVANIA has the competitive advantage in the arena of LED systems with years of experience
in designing and developing LEDs, LED modules and OPTOTRONIC® electronic LED drivers. Our global
network of design and manufacturing brings LED, electronics, and lighting systems knowledge together
to produce innovative, efficient, environmentally friendly and energy savings systems. Our LED systems
are covered by our comprehensive LED system warranty.
Hi-flux systems
DRAGONtape® and DRAGONpuck® LED modules offer an exciting possibility to use LEDs for
general illumination applications. These modules utilize the Golden DRAGONTM hi-flux LEDs from
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors which provide a luminous flux of up to 25 lumens per LED. Matching
OPTOTRONIC® constant current power supplies complete the system offering.
COLORMIX systems
LINEARlight Colormix and OPTOTRONIC® RGB Control system offers simple dynamic control for creating
colored lighting. LINEARlight Colormix modules feature a 3-chip LED with high luminous efficacy. Color
sequences or specific color tones can be generated with the OT RGB SEQUENCER or 3 CHANNEL
DIMMER. A pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme is used to mix the light output from individual red,
green and blue LEDs to create virtually any color within the CIE diagram. A connector is available for the
4 Colormix rigid module.
LINEARlight systems
Flexible LINEARlight flex reels are available with TOPLED or SIDELED options in a variety of colors.
The new HOW2TM, High Output White, second generation, flex products for white light offer a service
life of up to 50,000 hours and a choice of several color temperatures. The LINEARlight rigid modules
are an ideal choice for small and sleek luminaires. Optics and connector accessories are available for
the rigid modules.
BACKlight systems
Designed especially for outdoor signage applications the BACKlight system offers a versatile alternative
to neon for channel letter signs. It is also suitable for any application requiring LEDs oriented in a 3-
dimensional setting due to its flexibility. A wide variety of color and white color temperature choices are
available including the HOW2TM . This product is conformally coated and comes with an IP22 rating.
Along with matching OPTOTRONIC® 10V outdoor rated power supplies the BACKlight system offers a
versatile solution for signage.

Application Information (continued)
Application Notes
1. Module is intended for use with 350 mA constant current drive condition as is provided by the OT9/100-120/350 and OT9/10-24/350
DIM E (see PIB ECS052 for details). The module is not intended for use with constant voltage power supplies, including other OSRAM LED
power supplies.
2. For the white, blue and verde DRAGONtape products, the OT9 power supplies can power up to six LEDs (i.e. one complete module).
For the yellow and red DRAGONtape products, the OT9 can power up to 9 LEDs (i.e. 1.5 modules).
3. Installation of the DRAGONtape must include provision for thermal management to avoid premature failure of the product and to obtain expected
service life. Service life (i.e. lumen depreciation) is primarily a function of LED temperature which is to be monitored on the circuit board at the
designated “Tc-Point”. (A Tc-Point temperature of 40°C should be sufficient to enable a service life of 50,000 hours for the white DRAGONtape.)
4. There is no exact installation prescription to obtaining an appropriate Tc-Point temperature because every fixture design is different. In general, the
DRAGONtape module should be adhered to a clean, flat metal surface which has enough surface area to transfer the heat from the LED to the sur-
rounding air. The metal surface can be part of a conventional finned heat sink or can be part of the mass of the fixture itself. A very “ballpark” starting
point can be interpreted from the chart below which shows approximate heat sink surface area requirements for given service life expectations for
individual DRAGON LEDs (i.e multiply area values by six for an entire DRAGONtape module).
5. Concerning fixture design, it is important to understand that once heat is transferred to a “heat sink”, that heat must still be allowed to escape the
“system”. A heat sink transferring the thermal energy to the inside of an enclosed cavity may ultimately be of little use.
6. The fixture makers’ strategy should be to design a prototype fixture and test that fixture in an appropriate ambient environment while monitoring
the temperature at the Tc-Point which should be allowed enough time to reach thermal equilibrium. In the end, the heat sink areas from the chart
below only represent a starting point for initial design work while the Tc-Point temperature serves as the emperical test of proper thermal
management. Tc-Point temperature can be measured with a standard thermocouple in direct contact with the circuit board at the Tc-Point or
by use of ML4C Series non-reversible OMEGALABELS (www.omega.com) or equivalent.

Safety Information
1. The LED module and all of its components must not be subject to mechanical stress.
2. Assembly must not damage or destroy the conducting paths on the circuit board.
3. The LED Module incorporates no protection against short circuits, overload or overheating. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to operate
the modules with an electrically stabilized power supply offering protection against the above mentioned safety risks. For dimming applica-
tions, attention should be paid to the specific references in the “OPTOTRONIC Technical Guide”. OSRAM OPTOTRONIC power supplies are
specifically designed with protection features for safe operation. Use of third party power supplies is not recommended.
4. Installation of the LED Modules and OSRAM LED power supplies need to be made with regard to all applicable electrical and safety stan-
dards. Only qualified personnel should be allowed to perform installations.
5. Correct electrical polarity needs to be observed. Incorrect polarity may destroy the module.
6. All LEDs, up to the maximum number allowable for the power supply, should be installed in a single electrical series connection. Electrical
parallel connection can result in unbalanced voltage distribution resulting in damaging and potentially hazardous overload of some LEDs.
7. Pay attention to standard ESD precautions when handling and installing the module.
8. Only install according to the heat sinking parameters outlined in the Application Notes section.
9. Modules may be hot to touch; use caution.
Assembly Information
1. Solder connections should only be performed on designated solder pads at the locations of LED subunit marked “+” and “-“.
During soldering, do not exceed the maximum soldering time of 10 seconds and the maximum soldering temperature of 260°C.
2. The mounting of the module is facilitated by means of the double-sided adhesive on the back surface of the module. Care must be taken
to provide a clean and dry mounting surface, free of oils or silicone coatings as well as dirt particles. The mounting substrate must have suf-
ficient structural integrity. Take care to completely remove the adhesive backing. Once the module is appropriately positioned, press
on the module with about 20 N/cm2 (refer to application techniques of 3M adhesives transfer tapes).
3. The module should be installed onto flat surfaces to facilitate intimate thermal contact between the circuit board and the substrate material.
The module should not be installed onto curved surfaces.

Safety Information
1. The LED module itself and all its components must not be mechanically stressed.
2. Assembly must not damage or destroy conducting paths on the circuit board.
The LED Module incorporates no protection against short circuits, overload or overheating. Therefore it is absolutely
necessary to operate the modules with an electronically stabilized power supply offering protection against the above
mentioned safety risks.
OSRAM OPTOTRONIC power supplies are specifically designed with protection features for safe operation.
When using power supplies other than OPTOTRONIC the following basic safety features are required in addition to
any other application specific concerns and local safety codes:
• Short circuit protection
• Overload protection
• Overheat protection
• Correct output voltage, including consideration for ripple and spikes.
3. Installation of LED modules (with power supplies) needs to be made with regard to all applicable electrical and safety standards.
Only qualified personnel should be allowed to perform installations.
4. Correct electrical polarity needs to be observed. Wrong polarity may destroy the module and will result in no light emission.
5. Serial/electrical connection is recommended for 2 (white, green, blue) or 3 (red, yellow) modules. Parallel electrical connection is not
recommended. Unbalanced voltage drop can cause hazardous overload and damage the LED module.
11
6. Please ensure that the power supply is of adequate power to operate the total load. For the OT 09/100-120/350E and OT09/10-24/350DIM/E
power supplies, the maximum number of DRAGONpuck modules per power supply is 2 modules for the colors white, green and blue and 3
modules for yellow and red.
7. Pay attention to standard ESD precautions when installing the module.
8. Dimming of the DRAGONpuck is possible using the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) functionality of the OPTOTRONIC OT 09/10-24/350 DIM/E.
Dimming through the regulation of current amplitude will result in a spectral color shift.
9. Damage by corrosion will not be honored as a materials defect claim. It is the user’s responsibility to provide suitable protection against
corrosive agents such as moisture and condensation and other harmful elements.
10. Modules may be hot to touch. Use appropriate caution.
Assembly Information
1. The mounting of the module is facilitated by means of a M3x8 (8mm) screw which fits to a threaded hole in the rear of the DRAGONpuck housing.
The length of the screw depends on the thickness of the heat sink used.
2. The module should be in good thermal contact with the designed metallic mounting surface. Use of an appropriate heat sink compound is
recommended to eliminate air gaps.
3. To obtain maximum LED-lifetime please read carefully the recommended procedures concerning thermal management in our application
note “Lifetime of LED-modules” before beginning construction of luminaries. This application note is available from your OSRAM SYLVANIA
representative.
Application Notes
1. Module is intended for use with 350 mA constant current drive condition as is provided by the OT9/100-120/350 and OT9/10-24/350 DIM E (see

electrical and safety standards. Only qualified personnel should be allowed to perform installations.
5. Correct electrical polarity needs to be observed. Incorrect polarity will result in no light emission.
6. Any installation configuration involving more than one module or module segments should be electrically wired
in a parallel connection so as to maintain the 24 V operating condition.
7. Please ensure that the power supply is of adequate capacity to operate the load.
8. When mounting on metallic or otherwise conductive surfaces, there needs to be an electrical isolation between the module and
the mounting surface at the soldering points (and all subunit “break points”).
9. The maximum allowable run length of LINEARlight Flex OS-LM10L is 4000 mm. Any additional modules or module segments
should have power feeds going back to the power supply directly and not through another module.
10. Pay attention to standard ESD precautions when handling and installing the module.
11. The module, as manufactured, has no conformal coating and therefore offers no inherent protection against
corrosion. The ability to customize the length of the module by cutting at specifically marked points is a key feature
of the product and hence the reason for no factory installed conformal coating. For these reasons, it is recommended that the user
complete all module modifications first (cutting, wiring, etc.) and then apply a conformal coating in the final stages of installation.
12. Damage by corrosion will not be honored as a materials defect claim. It is the user’s responsibility to provide suitable protection
against corrosive agents such as moisture and condensation and other harmful elements.
13. For applications involving exposure to humidity and dust, the module must be protected by a fixture or housing with a suitable
protection glass. The module can be protected against condensation water by treatment with an appropriate circuit board grade
conformal coating. The conformal coating should have the following features:
– Optical transparency
– UV resistance
– Thermal expansion properties matching those of the module (15-30 x 10-6 cm/cm/K)
– Low permeability of steam for all climatic conditions
– Resistance against corrosive environments
Note: The “APL” grade conformal coating from Electrolube, Inc. (www.electrolube.com) has met the conditions
for the LINEARlight Flex in our tests.
Assembly Information
1. Solder connections should only be performed on designated solder pads. During soldering, do not exceed the
maximum soldering time of 10 seconds and the maximum soldering temperature of 260°C.
2. The mounting of the module is facilitated by means of the double-sided adhesive on the back surface of the module.
Care must be taken to provide a clean and dry mounting surface, free of oils or silicone coatings as well as dirt particles.
The mounting substrate must have sufficient structural integrity. Take care to completely remove the adhesive backing.
Once the module is appropriately positioned, press on the module with about 20 N/cm2 (refer to application techniques of
3M adhesives transfer tapes).
3. The minimum bend radius is 2 cm. The module may be bent over a smaller radius but only in regions of the circuit
board containing no electronic components and such bends should be made once and fixed in position to avoid
cyclic fatigue.
4. The thermal expansion coefficient along the length of the module is 17x10-6 cm/cm/K. When installing in environments with
large variations in temperature (e.g. outdoor applications) and operating lengths of more than 2 m, the use of metallic mounting
surfaces is necessary. Otherwise, it is advisable to use an additional thicker adhesive tape to absorb the stress of any mismatch
in expansion coefficients.

Theory of Color
A combination of all three primary colors of light (red, green, and blue) appears white to the human eye. Combinations of
two primaries produce the “secondary” colors — magenta, cyan, and yellow. The three primary colors can be mixed to
create almost any other color light. By mixing colors, the Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) may be adjusted to blend
with the surrounding environment.
The LINEARlight Flex Top Colormix can display almost any color by combining the light output of closely spaced RGB
chips. All three colors are placed within what appears to be just one LED.
Any color within the triangle below is achievable with the colormix system.

The OSRAM SYLVANIA LINEARlight Colormix provides LINEARCOLORMIX-OS-LM01M-RGB RGB
infinite possibilities for colored lighting.
LINEARlight Colormix modules provide dynamic control of
colored illumination. Each individual LED contains red, green
and blue chips in one LED package that can be controlled by
OPTOTRONIC® OT RGB 3CH DIM and OT RGB Sequencer
modules to yield an infinite choice of colors, including white.
This unique method of color mixing within each LED, achieves
better color consistency and uniformity than by combining sepa-
rate, colored LEDs. These dynamic features enable the systems
to be used in a wide range of large-scale applications, including
edge lighting of transparent and diffusing materials, illuminating
facades and coves and architectural applications. These modules

The LINEARlight Colormix can display almost any color by combining the light output of closely spaced RGB chips.
All three colors are placed within what appears to be just one LED.
Any color within the triangle below is achievable with the colormix system.

Safety Information
1. The LED module itself and all its components may not be mechanically stressed.
2. Assembly must not damage or destroy conducting paths on the circuit board.
The LED Module incorporates no protection against short circuits, overload or overheating. Therefore it is necessary to operate
the modules with an electronically stabilized power supply offering protection against the above mentioned safety risks.
OSRAM OPTOTRONIC power supplies are specifically designed with protection features for safe operation.
When using power supplies other than OPTOTRONIC the following basic safety features should be verified in addition to any
other application specific concerns and local safety codes:
• Short circuit protection
• Overload protection
• Overheat protection
• Correct output voltage, including consideration for ripple and spikes.
25
Safety Information
3. Installation of LED modules (with power supplies) needs to be made with regard to all applicable electrical and safety
standards. Only qualified personnel should be allowed to perform installations.
4. Correct electrical polarity needs to be observed. Wrong polarity will result in no light emission and may
destroy the module.
5. Please ensure that the power supply is of adequate power rating to operate the total load. Follow appropriate
NEC requirements.
6. When mounting on metallic or otherwise conductive surfaces, an electrical isolation is required at soldering points between
the module and the mounting surface.
7. The maximum length of LINEARlight Flex OS-LM10A is 13.8 ft. with a power feed at one end (11.5 ft. for HOW2
modules). The complete module (27.5 ft.) can be operated with a power feed in the middle of the module or with power fed
to both ends (23 ft. for HOW2 modules).
8. Pay attention to standard ESD precautions when installing the module.
9. The module, as manufactured, has no conformal coating and therefore offers no inherent protection against
corrosion. The ability to customize the length of the module by cutting at specifically marked points is a key feature
of the product and hence the reason for no factory installed conformal coating. For these reasons, it is recommended that the
user complete all module modifications first (cutting, wiring) and then apply a conformal coating in the final stages of installation.
10. Damage by corrosion will not be honored as a materials defect claim. It is the user’s responsibility to provide suitable protection
against corrosive agents such as moisture and condensation and other harmful elements.
11. For application involving exposure to humidity and dust the module must be protected by a fixture or housing with a suitable
protection glass. The module can be protected against condensation water by treatment with an appropriate circuit board grade
conformal coating. The conformal coating should have the following features:
- Optical transparency
- UV-resistance
- thermal expansion matching the thermal expansion of the module 15-30 x 10^-6 cm/cm/K
- low permeability of steam for all climatic conditions
- resistance against corrosive environment
Note: The “APL” grade conformal coating from Electrolube, Inc. (www.electrolube.com) has met the conditions for the LINEARlight Colormix in our tests.
Assembly Information
1. Solder connections should only be performed on designated solder pads (marked “24V +/-“). During soldering, do not
exceed the maximum soldering time of 10 seconds and the maximum soldering temperature of 260°C.
2. The smallest unit (5.5" – 10 LEDs) can be removed by cutting with scissors between the designated solder pads.
3. The mounting of the module is facilitated by means of the double-sided adhesive on the back-surface of the module.
Care must be taken to provide a clean and dry mounting surface, free of oils or silicone coatings as well as dirt particles.
The mounting substrate must have sufficient structural integrity. Take care to completely remove the adhesive backing.
Once the module is appropriately positioned, press on the module with about 20N/cm2 (refer to application techniques of
3M adhesive transfer tapes).
4. The minimum bending radius is 2 cm. The module may be bent over a smaller radius but only in regions of the circuit board
containing no electronic components. Such bends should be made only once and fixed in position to avoid cyclic fatigue.
5. The thermal expansion coefficient along the length of the module is 17 x 10^-6cm/cm/K. When installing in environments
with large variations in temperature (e.g. outdoor applications) and operating length of more than 2 m, the use of metallic
mounting surfaces is necessary. Otherwise it is advisable to use an additional thicker adhesive tape to absorb the stress of
any mismatch in expansion coefficients.

Safety Information
1. The LED module and its components should not be mechanically stressed.
2. Assembly must not damage or destroy conducting paths on the circuit board.
3. To avoid mechanical damage to the connecting cables, the boards should be attached securely to the intended substrate.
Heavy vibration should be avoided.
4. Detach each circuit board unit of the module only by severing the connecting cables (with power disconnected).
The LED Module incorporates no protection against short circuits, overload or overheating. Therefore it is necessary to oper-
ate the modules with an electronically stabilized power supply offering protection against the above mentioned safety risks.
5. Installation of LED modules (with power supplies) needs to be made with regard to all applicable electrical and safety standards.
Only qualified personnel should be allowed to perform installations.
6. Correct electrical polarity needs to be observed. Wrong polarity may destroy the module!
7. Parallel connection is highly recommended for safe electrical operation mode. Serial connection of more than 3 modules
is not recommended. Unbalanced voltage drop can cause hazardous overload and damage the LED module.
8. Electrical contact is achieved with the contact cables. A maximum of 3 modules can be installed consecutively from one power feed.
Operation with more than 3 consecutive BACKlight modules will reduce photometric performance and exceed the current carrying
capacity of the module. If more than 3 modules are connected in series (maximum 6), power feed should be to the center of the string.
9. The module itself is protected against condensation water with a polymeric conformal coating. Supplementary soldering on any solder
pad will destroy the conformal coating and with it protection against condensation water.
10. Operation in or under water is not allowed.
Assembly Information
1. Mounting of the LED module may be performed with screws or Snap-In spacer (e.g. from Richco www.richco-int.com)
by using 4 mm holes in the circuit board. See the “BACKlight Intallation Guide” for more details.
2. The mounting of the module is carried out by attaching it at the mounting holes. Mounting screws should be used with
synthetic washers to prevent circuit board damage and possible short circuiting.
3. A maximum of 3 modules can be installed consecutively from any power feed. Installation with more than 3 BACKlight Modules
may take the form of, for example, either 6 modules installed consecutively with a power feed to the center or with a splitting
of the power feed to contact groups of 3 modules.
4. To connect the LED modules with each other or with OPTOTRONIC Power Supply we recommend standard connectors
(e.g. WAGO 243-214 or 224-201).
5. Derate maximum LED load for remote mounting or exterior applications. Contact OSRAM SYLVANIA for details.
