USING GOOGLE CLASROOM AS MEDIA FOR LEARNING ENGLISH: STUDENTS

PERSPECTIVE IN ENGLISH CLASROOM DURING PANDEMIC

ABSTRACT

This research investigates about students’ perspective of using Google Classroom as media for
learning English. The aim of this research is to investigate the students’ perspective of using
Google classroom as media for English Learning. In this research used quantitative research in
the form of a survey. In this research involved five classes which consist 30 of the student each
class, but the researcher take 15 students each one class. The research will collecting the data
using Google form for the student to filling it. Based on the result, the researcher found that the
students satisfy with the Google Classroom’s tool that were introduced in the class where all
ratios are above averages. In particular, comparative performance is good in the areas of ease of
access, perceived usefulness, communication and interaction, instruction delivery and students’
satisfaction towards the Google Classroom’s learning activities.

Key Words: Perception, Google Classroom, E-Learning

1. INTRODUCTION

Since the discovery of covid-19, the system in various fields has changed from offline to online,
include in education system. Therefore, the Indonesian ministry of education and culture has
issued circular letter number 4 of 2020 concerning implementation emergency education that is
E-learning. (Chandra, 2020).

E-learning has been recognized as an effective way to improve the quality of learning in schools
because of its variety in increasing student satisfaction, student interaction, and student
motivation. There are many kinds of platform that supported E learning such as zoom, Google
meet, edmodo even Google Classroom.(Arora, 2020). Google Classroom is to offer a platform of
blended learning in schools in order to simplify creating assignment and getting the grade out to
the students in a paperless way (Donald Yates, 2017). Google Classroom helps teachers and
students to communicate and can be used to organize and manage assignments, to go paperless,
for collaboration between students and between teachers, and so on. Google Classroom aims to
provide a platform for blended learning in schools to simplify the creation of assignments, and
ensure that students receive grades in a paperless manner. It is a popular Web 2.0 tool that comes
with lots of unique features and applications.
Form previous research has not presented more detailed and in depth studies on a specific
medium such as zoom meet, Google met etc. In this study will carried out Google Classroom to
fill the gap with the previous study.

The aim of this research is find out the perspective the using of Google classroom as media for
learning English and find out the difficulties of Using Google classroom as Media in Learning
English, it can find out what obstacles have arisen and can be fixed for further learning. At this
time we are entering the 4.0 era, which does not close the possibility that someday e-learning has
become a policy. It is therefore very important to carry out this research.

The expected results in this study are to help the online learning process to find out how students'
perspective the using Google Classroom as media for English learning. After knowing students’
perspective, its hope the teacher will find their stragies and method that suitable to teach
students thorugh e-learning.
2. LITERATURE REVIEW

There have been many research papers on e-learning, online learning, and blended learning;
however, the number of research papers on Google Classroom as a learning tool is still limited.
(Firouz, 2004) reported that eLearning platforms and make recommendations on how to improve
their effectiveness and efficiency. In order to more interaction between the educator and the
student is required to enable student involvement in a more active learning style. (e learnig
Platform jurnal). Related with other research, the study was carried out at the Faculty of
Technical Sciences at the University of Novi Sad in Serbia that involved 42 students from two
courses. The findings show a significant relationship between student performance and the use of
digital educational resources from the e-learning platform. As a result, the results revealed that
the best students are located in the network's core, as measured by eigenvector centrality.
Furthermore, the trend of the analyzed data indicates that students with similar performance are
in the same cluster and that the intensity of resource use correlates with the achieved scores.
(international) Therefore, in other words e learning can carried positive impact for learning
process.
One of the platforms to support e learning is Google Classroom. Based on the research of (Izwan
Jastini and Sarah 2017) that conducted the research about Google Classroom as tools teaching
and learning, who analyzed data from 100 students showed that the majority of students are
pleased with the Google Classroom tool that was introduced in class, with all ratios being above
average, In particular, comparative performance is good in the areas. (gc as teaching and learning). In
this research one way with (Rana and Mostafa 2018) research that talking about Students acceptance of
Google Classroom. Following analysis of the results of 337 students of Al Buraimi University
College (BUC) in Oman. It was found that The findings show that all of the factors have a
significant impact on both behavioral intention and actual use of Google Classrooms. As critical
features of Google Classroom, the emphasis is placed on familiarity, usefulness, and ease of use.
As Google Classroom serves as a facilitator to develop their learning activities, these two
features have a significant impact on the chosen sample of undergraduates' intentions. (studets
accepyence). Therefore, the using Google Classroom be can effectively to teching students
through E learning.

The benefit of Google Classroom, according to Lynch (2018) benefits of Google

Classroom as follows:

a. Accessibility

Google Classroom can be accessed from any computer via Google Chrome or from any

mobile device regardless of platform

b. Paperless

Teachers and student can complete assignment and assessment directly through Google

Classroom and their work is also save to drive

c. Time Saver

Google classroom can be access anywhere, teachers will have more free time to complete

other task. Google classroom can be accessed from a mobile device, teachers and

students can participate through their phones or tablets.

d. Communication
Teachers and students can send emails, post to the stream, send private comments or

assignment and provide comments or assignment, and provide feedback on work.

Teacher have full control over student and posts. They also communicate with parents

through individual emails or through classroom email summaries.

e. Feedback

Providing meaningful feedback to students is a valuable part of all learning. Teachers can

send feedback to each student on assignment.

3. METHODHOLOGY

This research uses a quantitative in the form of a survey. According Nazir (2005) survey

research can be defined as an investigation to obtain facts from existing phenomena and seek

factual information, whether about the social, economic, or political institution of a group or an

individual. According to Margono (2005), thus survey research method is a critical investigation

to obtain clear and good information on a particular area. This research involved 75 students of

five class from SMAN 4 Kota Serang. The research data are obtained using close ended

questionnaires. To collecting data, the researcher will use Google Form to gathering the data.

Descriptive statistical analysis intended to find a general description of the research data.

According to (Hasan 2001) explains that descriptive statistic are part of statistic that study how

to collect data and present data. Descriptive statistic function to explain the condition, symptom,

or problem.

the lowest mean score was seen in the statement “Google Classroom make them easy to
understand the system”. The statement have score 3.29 and TCR 65.8%”. According to This app
is easily accessible and usable by instructors and learners in both face-to-face and fully online
learning environments. This allows educators to more easily experiment with and influence
"flipped instructional methods, as well as automate and organize the distribution and collection
of assignments and communications in multiple instructional milieus." (Mary, 2014). Therefore,
Google Classroom can easy to sign and receive assignment to support e learning.

Suggestion

Based on the conclusion that have been stated above, the learning process can still be carried out
even though it is not face to face but in online system through Google Classroom. With it is known that
goole classroom is quite effective in using E learning. Then, for futher researcher, it is hoped that they can
continue research on the use of Google Classroom in online learning using other indicators.
