Therefore, its design is commonly concerned as one of the core tasks for shipbuilding and shipping performance. Due to the competition of shipmarket getting so fierce, cost of fuel and manpower getting much expensive, result in the ship’s operation cost goes up too. Under this market condition, ships’owner raises much high requirement to the ship designer and shipbuilding enterprises. They require that the ships must have high quality and lower operation cost. So, it is very necessary to study the economy of ship design. ‘What is the economic ship design? Firstly, the ship’s operation cost should be lower, when you can’t to control the fuel price and manpower cost, you should do the best to make possible means to save energe and minimize the complement, thereby the ship’s owner can use small money to get biggest profit. Secondly, the cost of building must be lower. During designing, you have to make much accurate calculation and advanced techniques, so that the shipyard can use less material and manpower to build the ship, it means the shipyard can get the biggest profit also. Thirdly, to select the advanced equipment is also one direct means of improving ship’s performance and safety. This paper is base the designing of “Diamond 53k DWT Double Skin Bulk Carrier” and the performance features of this kind of existing ship to study and demonstrate ship design is the one of main means of improving ship’s economy.
