Activity No. 3.2

A. What does copyright law say about a work; e.g. photo, diagram, chart, or whole
journal article, which does not have © copyright symbol? How will you include
these in you project presentation?
 The UM Copyright Guidelines indicate that generally a copyright protected
work such as a chart, graph, diagram, figure, drawing, photograph or map
can be copied without permission for Fair Dealing purposes if the image
makes up less than 10% of all the images in the article, book, or website that
it came from.
 Charts, diagrams, graphs, and tables are not subject to copyright protection
because they do not meet the first requirement for copyright protection, that is,
they are not “original works of authorship,” under the definitions in the Act. In a
sense, yes, but in the sense that's important for copyright, no.
 I will include them in project presentation thru citing the author or the source
of my reference's, to obtain permission from the copyright owner.
B. Are patch writing and rephrasing good remedy to avoid obtaining copyright
permission to an existing work? Why?
 The Paraphrasing of copyrighted material may, under certain circumstances,
constitute copyright infringement. Whether a paraphrase is an infringement of
expression, or a permissible restatement of an idea, is not a binary question but a
matter of degree.
 The answer is no, paraphrasing without crediting the original author is a form of
plagiarism, because you're presenting someone else's ideas as if they were your
own. However, paraphrasing is not plagiarism if you correctly cite the source.
Paraphrasing is plagiarism if your text is too close to the original wording (even if
you cite the source). If you directly copy a sentence or phrase, you should quote it
instead. Paraphrasing is not plagiarism if you put the author's ideas completely in
your own words and properly cite the source.
C. What does copyright law say about a generally copyright protected work such as
a chart, graph, diagram, figure, drawing, photograph, or map? Can this be copied
without permission? Why?
 The copyright law say about a generally copyright protected work such as a
chart, graph, diagram, figure, drawing, photograph, or map can not copied
without permission because copyright guidelines indicate that generally a
copyright protected work such as a chart, graph, diagram, figure, drawing,
photograph, or map can be copied without permission for Fair Dealing
purposes if image makes up less than 10% of all the images in the article,
book, or website that it came from.
D. How is copyright infringement related to plagiarism? Why?
 Copyright Infringement. Plagiarism is using someone else's work or ideas without
giving proper credit. Plagiarism applies when ideas are copied; copyright violation
occurs only when a specific fixed expression (e.g., sequence of words, use of an
image) is copied.
 Copyright infringement and plagiarism are related, but distinctly different
situations. Copyright does not protect ideas. Copyright infringement is a legal
matter. Plagiarism on the other hand is when someone passed off the work of
someone else as one's own or without acknowledgement of the original source.
 The copyright infringement related to plagiarism because it is using
someone else’s work or ideas without giving proper credit. Copyright
violation occurs only when a specific fixed expression for example sequence
of words, use of an image is copied while Plagiarism applies when ideas are
copied.
E. Are the Filipinos covered by the Copyright Laws of the other countries? Why?
 There is no such thing as an “international copyright” that will automatically
protect an author's writings throughout the world but; the Philippines is a member
of several international copyright treaties and conventions and offers copyright
protection to foreign works in accordance with these treaties.

because Philippines is a member of several international copyright treaties
