AM1100 - ENGINEERING MECHANICS - ASSIGNMENT 4 – Virtual Work & Energy Relations

1. The position of lever ABC is controlled by the

hydraulic cylinder BD as shown in the figure.
For the loading shown, find the force exerted by
the hydraulic cylinder on pin B when θ = 70
degrees.

2. A drawbridge of weight W can be raised with

the aid of a cable (weight neglected) and a
counter-weight Q as in figure. Find the positions
of equilibruim.

3. Two pin-jointed rods of weights W1 and W2

are displaced from the vertical position by a
horizontal force F as in figure. Determine the
equilibrium configuration.

4. A solid of uniform density is made of a

hemisphere and a right circular cone which have
a common base of radius r as shown in the
figure. Determine the largest value of the height
h of the cone consistent with the stability of the
body in the vertical position.
5. The uniform link AB shown in figure has a
mass of 10 kg. The spring is unstretched when
θ=0°. Determine the angle θ for equilibrium and
investigate the stability at the equilibrium
position.

6. A combination of spring and torsion bar

vehicle suspension is shown in figure. The
spring constant is 150 kN/m. The torsion bar AB
has a torsional resistance to rotation of 5,000 N-
m/rad. When the vertical load is zero, the spring
length is 0.45 m, and bar AB is horizontal (0.4 m
long). Determine the angle α when the
suspension supports a weight of 5 kN.
