Rated Nominal Current Module (Rating Plug)

Example:
3WL with I n max = 1600A
Rating plugs connectable from 250A to 1600A
IR = In x ......

Advantage:
- No time- and cost-intensive
transformer adjustments required

- Assured protective function at all times –

also with partial configuration!

SENTRON 3WL
Current Sensor with Rogowski Coil

SENTRON 3WL
Current sensor consists of: - Energy transducer
- Rogowski coil
The Rogowski coil is an air-cored coil.
Advantages:
- No saturation as opposed to iron current transformer
- High accuracy < 1% , also suitable for measuring purposes

Only one current sensor per size

Page 24 09 / 2008 SENTRON Guide / © Siemens AG 2008 - Subject to changes
SENTRON 3WL
Current Sensor with Rogowski Coil

Thanks to the Rogowski coil, the activation

limits for the trip unit are as follows:
Size I + II: Only 80 A (in one phase)
Size III: Only 200 A

Assured protection already with very small primary currents!

For comparison:
With “normal” CTs, approx. 20-30% of the nominal current are required!

Measuring accuracy:
Current: Rogowski coil and measuring function:
High accuracy of 1 % (referred to I n max)

Page 25 09 / 2008 SENTRON Guide / © Siemens AG 2008 - Subject to changes

SENTRON 3WL
Advantages Through Current Sensor + Rating Plug

1. Through combined transformer + rating plug

=> no exchange or adjustment of current transformers required!

+
2. Through combined transformer + rating plug + AO module + ammeter
=> accurate indication also possible in the low-load range
=> no separate current transformers required in the system

Application probably not with

+ + + “standard infeeds” with CT.
Possible solution for subsequent
Rotary coil instrument adjustments for [A]; [V]; etc.
(no moving iron)

+ + 4-20mA Utilization of 4-20mA as input signal in

the control station, e.g. for [ A] or [V]
=> Economization of a measuring
transducer

Basics Circuit Breakers
Short-Circuit Breaking Capacity

Rated short-circuit breaking capacity Icn

+ Icn is the generic term for Icu and Ics ,
+ Icu and Ics have to be >= than Isc" of the system
+ maximum short-circuit current to be switched off

Rated ultimate short-circuit breaking capacity Icu

Test sequence (old T1): I cu : O - t - CO
This current has to be switched off two times by the circuit breaker
without causing damage.
Subsequently, the device has to be replaced or revised.

Rated service ultimate short-circuit breaking capacity Ics

Test sequence (old T2): I cs : O - t - CO - t - CO
This current has to be switched off three times by the circuit breaker
without causing damage.
Subsequently, the breaker must be able to conduct the operating current.

Basics Circuit Breakers
Selection Criterion: Utilization Category

Utilization category A
1. Circuit breakers which are not especially dimensioned
for selectivity under short-circuit conditions
2. Without intended short-time delay
3. Without rated short-time withstand current Icw

Utilization category B
1. Circuit breakers which are especially dimensioned
for selectivity under short-circuit conditions
2. With rated short-time withstand current Icw over 50 msec
In < 2500 A: 12 x I n; however at least Icw = 5kA
In > 2500 A: Icw = 30kA

Protective Setting
Isd (LSI Function)

Protective setting of Isd

It has to be assured that the minimum short-circuit current
F1 Isc min is detected by Isd and switched off within the specified
Q1 time (5 sec or 0.4 sec).
Example: The Isd of Q3 has to detect the Isc min on the end of
the line (fault position F4) and switch it off within the tolerance
F2 of + / - 20 %.
Q2 Within the tolerance means:
Isc min = 120 % of Isd

F3 Conclusion:
Q3 The value to be set for Isd Q 3 is:
I sd Q3 < I‘‘sc min - 20 %
F4

Important: All selectivity considerations and protective settings always start at the consumer.

Basics
Key Data and Terms for Switching Devices and Distribution Boards

• Icu Rated ultimate short-circuit breaking capacity Effective value

Switching capacity test with switching sequence 0-t-CO

• Ics Rated service short-circuit breaking capacity Effective value

Switching capacity test with switching sequence 0-t-CO-t-CO

• Icw Rated short-time withstand current Effective value

Permissible effective value of the AC component of the unaffected short-circuit
current which can be conducted by the switching device over a certain period,
e.g. 0.05 – 1.0 sec (Æ thermal short-circuit strength)

• Icm Rated short-circuit making capacity Peak value

Maximum unaffected short-circuit peak value which can be switched on by the
device

• Icn Rated short-circuit breaking capacity Effective value

Value of the unaffected short-circuit current (effective value of the AC component)
which can be switched off by the device

• Ith Thermal limit current Effective value

Value indicating the thermal short-circuit strength (compare Icw).

• ip Impulse short-circuit current Peak value

Value of the short-circuit AC current plus the DC component (compare Icm ).
