PRODUCT STANDARD GRADE ACCEPT. CLASS SUPPL. REQ.
Studs and Bolts ASTM A320 L7, L7M**

Nuts ASTM 194 7, 7M** S3, S4, S5

1. Scope This MDS specifies the selected supplemental requirements in the referred standards and additional
requirements which shall be added to the corresponding requirements in the referred standard.

2. Raw Material Bars from which the nuts are made shall be hot-wrought. The material may be further processed by
centerless grinding or by cold drawing.

3. Manufacturing Threading of studs and bolts may be done by machining or rolling. Thread rolling shall be done after heat
treatment.
Threads in nuts shall be machined.

4. Impact Test For ASTM A320 L7 and L7M shall be in accordance with ASTM A320 table 2.

For ASTM A194: Supplementary requirement S3 low temperature requirements shall apply (same
requirements than ASTM A320 L7 and L7M).

5. Chemical For ASTM A320 the chemical requirements shall be in accordance with table 3.
Composition Grade L7M, a minimum carbon content of 0.28 % is permitted provided that the required tensile
properties are met in the section sizes involved; the use of AISI 4130 or 4130H is allowed.

For ASTM A194 the chemical requirements shall be in accordance with table 1.

Positive Material Identification shall be performed for 10% of batch.

6. Heat Treatment For ASTM A320 shall comply with item 5.1(Heat Treatment).

For ASTM A194 shall comply with item 6 (Manufacture process).

7. **Sour Service** When sour service is specified by the purchaser, only Grade L7M/7M is acceptable.

The material shall be traceable in accordance with ISO 15156-2/NACE MR0175-2 section 9 and this MDS.

Nuts fabricated according to ASTM

Proof Test
A194/A194M−20
• Required for nuts of proof loads of over 160 000 lbf or 705 kN
DN ¼ up to 1 ½ as per item 8.2.1.
• Comply with table 3 and 4 of ASTM A194/A194M.
8. Proof Load • Required.
Testing • In case of lack of test capability, cross sectional hardness test
per Annex A3 of ASTM A370 may be applied instead of proof
load. It shall comply with item 8.2.1 of ASTM A194/A194M as
DN > 1 ½
well.
• A report with results shall be attached on material certification
signed supplier technician and approve by MODEC QAQC or
Engineering (T3).

9. NDE All products shall be 100 % visually examined in all areas of threads, shanks and heads. Discontinuities
shall comply with requirements specified in ASTM F788 for bolts/studs and ASTM F812 for nuts.

10. Marking The grade symbol to be marked shall be L7 for Bolt and 7 for nuts.
Each item shall be individually legibly marked.
11. Dimensions Studs and bolts:
− Threading shall be in accordance with ASME B1.1, class 2A fit for diameters 1 in and smaller (UNC series)
and 8 pitch thread series for 1 1/8 in and larger.

Nuts:
− Nuts shall be ASME heavy HEX-series, double chamfered.
− Nut threads shall be oversized to fit studs/bolts dependent of specified coating.

12. Coating As per specified on section 6.2.8 Bolting of Piping Materials Specification (2500-M380-00S1-0110-001).

13. Certification The material manufacturer shall have a quality system certified in accordance with ISO 9001 and the
system shall have undergone a specific assessment for the relevant materials.
Supplementary requirement S5 shall apply for nuts to A 194.

The material certificate shall be issued in accordance with EN 10204 Type 3.1, and shall include:
• Steel manufacturer of starting material;
• Heat treatment condition and its respective thermal curves.

The coating certificate shall include such items:

• QAC certificate or;
• WRC certificate valid with B117 salt spray test of current year.
• Salt Spray certificate shall clearly indicate the same coating required on purchase order.
• Salt Spray test should be performed and certified by third party test laboratory preferentially. In
case coating applicator performs the test, the result shall be certified by representative of
quality control department.
• Salt Spray Criteria:
Zn-Ni + Xylan 1014: min. 3000 hours (≤ 15% Red Rust)
Xylar 2 + Xylan 1014: min. 5000 Hours (≤ 15% Red Rust)
