4. INTRODUCTION

Flooding is an overflow of a large amount of water beyond its normal limits,


especially over land which is usually dry. For example when there is an
excessive amount of rain, a river may become full to its maximum capacity and
the excess water overflows its banks and flows onto the nearby land .Flooding
has many causes some are as followed: prolonged rainfall , overflowing rivers ,
lack of vegetation, poor drainage systems in urban area and etc. Some
countries experience more flooding than others. Here are the top 5 countries
where the most flooding is recorded ; India , Bangladesh, China , Vietnam and
Pakistan.

Flooding can have major effects on us as human beings. Flooding can lead to
death because as these flood waters they can contain diseases or even large
objects which can trample a human being. Other than death flooding can affect
us in different ways, for example it causes lost of money and sometimes
property. When flooding occurs people who are not prepared can lose various
things such as : electrical appliances, life stocks , crops and etc.

What are the cause and consequences of flooding along Suchit Trace and
Debe Trace, in Penal, South Western Trinidad?

7. METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION

Where- The location chosen to conduct the research was Suchit Trace and Debe
Trace,Penal,Trinidad.

When- The research information was obtained over a one month period, in August
2021.
8. Presentation of data

Flooding in Debe and Suchit Trace is a problem that has been occurring during the
rainy season in Trinidad for many years. Trinidad rainy season last from June to
December. The average rainfall recorded in Trinidad is approximately 1700
millimeters per year.

Forty person were interviewed from the area affected. Twenty-eight of the forty
persons interviewed were males and twelve were females. The ages of the persons
interviewed varied from 21 to 50+ years . The families that were interviewed sizes
varied from 1 to 7+ members.
All persons that were interviewed were Highly Prone to flooding and have
experienced it for years. All persons house hold items were also affected by
flooding.

From the persons interviewed 7 lost vehicles , 22 lost agricultural crops , 5 lost
livestock pens and 3 lost driveways.
Out of the 40 persons interviewed 32 received assistance from the government ( and
out of the 32 only 15 received adequate reimbursement.

Below is a pie chart showing the approximate value of destruction to home or


property of persons interviewed.

The residents were asked what can be done to stop the flooding they replied
with the following:

•building of river banks


•Maintaining river banks
• Cleaning and Dredging of Rivers in the
area
• Wider and deeper drains in front of homes
• Installation of pumps
• Construction of detention dams
9. Conclusion

The Causes of flooding in Suchit Trace and Debe Trace, in Penal, South-
Western Trinidad according to information acquired is over flowing
rivers, clogged drains or small drains. Which consequences are lose of
vehicles, livestock pens, agricultural crops, driveways and some
household items.
