The United States has massive and complex agricultural subsidy program that costs the

taxpayers and government $20 billion a year. The system is largely unbalanced, rewarding the
largest of farms while smaller ones get little to nothing. Subsidies can be given out without
regard to crop values or amount produced in the form of Direct Payment Subsidies. In addition,
some subsidies are still given to farmers not to grow crops. These types of subsidies benefit the
few and have no positive benefit for the rest of society who has to pay for these billions of
dollars of hand-outs. With the economy in a slump, the government running a deficit and the
national debt running out of control, there is no reason to keep these wasteful farm subsidies
around.
