Veins are high-capacity blood
vessels that carry
deoxygenated blood from the
body's capillaries to the
heart.
Arteries are vessels that
carry oxygenated blood from
the heart to the capillaries
of the body; they have
thicker walls than veins.
Cardiac output or cardiac output
is the volume of blood ejected by
a ventricle in one minute.
Cardiac output is the end result
of all the mechanisms that are
normally involved in determining
ventricular function (heart rate,
contractility, synergy of
contraction, preload and
afterload).
The cardiac cycle is the
sequence of mechanical,
sound and pressure events
related to the flow of blood
through the heart cavities,
the contraction and
relaxation of each of them
(atria and ventricles), the
closing and opening of the
valves and noise production.
Heart sounds are caused by
blood turbulence or
vibration of heart and
vascular structures. This
turbulence is caused by the
acceleration or deceleration
of blood flow or the flow of
blood through a hole or over
a surface that is rough or
uneven.
It is the process that consists of
the contraction of the cardiac
atrial and ventricular muscle
tissue. Atrial systole is the first
step and is responsible for the
atria of the heart to contract and
give way to blood flow to the
ventricles. Ventricular systole
consists of increased pressure in
the ventricles and the expulsion
of blood stored within them.
It is the moment in which the heart
relaxes completely and allows the blood
flow, coming from the lungs and the
arteries, to re-enter the ventricular
and atrial cavities so that, later, the
cardiac cycle is repeated.
This period when the heart stops
pumping blood and goes into a resting
state while it fills and prepares for
systole takes just 0.5 seconds.
