3: FOCUS READING
1. Failure to tell the truth about news that is going to be broadcast can result in a
journalist betraying the public's confidence. "In my opinion, clear thinking and clear
statement, as well as accuracy and fairness, are essential components of good
journalism. I believe that a journalist should only write what he or she believes to be
true in his or her heart." "I believe that a journalist should only write what he or she
believes in his or her heart to be true," says the author. These statements imply that
journalists should exercise greater caution and responsibility when disseminating
information to the media and news organizations. They risk losing the public's trust if
they continue to muddle things up by gathering information and not communicating
clearly with the public.
2. What the author was getting at with this line was that having a good reputation and
being a pleasant public figure can help one's work become more trustworthy in the eyes
of the general public. For example, a journalist who has a sincere desire to become a
public figure can help to increase the public's trust in him or her.
3. I believe that the best journalism fears God and honors Man; is steadfastly independent,
unmoved by pride of opinion or greed for power, constructive, tolerant but never
careless, self-controlled, patient, always respectful of its readers but always unafraid, is
