1. Dance and dancing

As nouns the difference between dance and dancing is that dance is a sequence of
rhythmic steps or movements usually performed to music, for pleasure or as a form
of social interaction while dancing is the activity of taking part in a dance.

2. Folk dance and the objective of the Philippine folk dance

Philippine folk dances are a celebration of daily life, health, peace, war, harvest
times and other aspects of life. According to the National Commission for Culture
and the Arts, Philippine folk dances imitate nature and life because they are rituals
for social and spiritual expression.
The purpose of folk dance in our life
Compared to other forms of cultural and artistic manifestation, folk dance is the
one that appears most frequently at the level of a community's social life, for which
it fulfils certain ceremonial, ritual, or entertainment functions, as a means of
communication.

3. Classification of dances

There are three main classifications: classical ballet, neoclassical ballet and
contemporary ballet. This style of dance is used to tell a story. It relies heavily on
technique and requires an enormous about of diligence and dedication to perfect.

- Originated from Spain, this dance is commonly performed


at formal affairs like inaugural balls where prominent members of
the government participate and enjoy.

Cariñosa

- Cariñosa is a word that describes an affectionate, friendly


and lovable woman. This dance is performed in flirtatious manner
with fans and handkerchiefs to assist the hide-and-seek
movements.

La Jota Manileña

- It is a dance named after the capital city of the Philippines, Manila,


where an adaptation of Castilian Jota afloat with the clacking of bamboo
castanets played by the dancers themselves. The costume and the
graceful movements of the performers noticeably inspired
by Spanish Culture.

2. LOCAL DANCES found in specific locality. (e.g. Tinikling-


Leyte; Subli-Batangas)

Tinikling

- Tinnikling is considered the national folkdance with a pair


of dancers hopping between two bamboo poles held just above the
ground and struck together in time to music. Originated from
Leyte Province, this dance is in fact a mimic movement of
hopping over trees, grass stems or over bamboo traps set by
farmers. Dancers perform this dance with remarkable grace andspeed
jumping between bamboo poles.

Subli-Batangas

- This dance is one of the most popular dance in the


Philippines and the favorite in Batangas. This dance is simply
ceremonial in nature and this is performed as homage to the Holy Cross.
The Holy Cross is known by the locals as the 'Mahal na Poong Santa
Krus', and the Holy Cross plays an important role in the
development of the dance. In fact, the Holy Cross is considered at

 Stronger bones and reduced risk of osteoporosis.
 Better coordination, agility and flexibility.
6. Basic movement skills in folk dance
What are the movement in folk dance?
Folk dance steps are usually quite simple variations on walking, hopping, skipping,
and turning. (See above Folk dance.) Depending on the particular dance form,
these steps may be long, slow, and gliding or short, fast, and springing.
