I. TITLE OF THE STUDY
THE SPEAKING SKILL PROFICIENCY LEVEL OF FIRST YEAR BSED
ENGLISH STUDENTS USING ONLINE MODALITY OF RAMON MAGSAYSAY
MEMORIAL COLLEGES
A. Introduction
People prefer face to face exchange of communication, in academic and learning
aspect most of the students will choose traditional learning over online class. According
to Cathy Li and Farah Lalani, 2020, “different countries with different infected rates of
covid 19, worldwide there are currently 1.2 billion children’s in 186, countries affected
by school closures due to pandemic. With this sudden shift away from classroom in
many parts of the globe, some are wondering whether the adoption of online learning
will continue to persist post pandemic, and how the sich shift would impact worldwide
education.”
Online class is a huge challenge for the students in learning and improving, how online
modality can affect the speaking and other competence of the students. It is such a big
adjustment both for teachers and students, from traditional turns up into online. And
even years ago some of the students used online for their studies. Based to Allan Raper
(2007),” More and more, adult learners are finding the convenience and flexibility of
online learning a match for their learning goals and busy lifestyles. Online degree
programs, courses, and virtual universities targeting adult learners have proliferated in
the past decade. Although students can easily locate an online course or degree
program that's both convenient and accessible, they may face significant challenges in
developing a new set of skills for this type of instruction. Educators have speculated on
the development of student skills necessary to succeed in online learning, but relatively
few publications cover the topic from the perspective of successful online students. I
developed the study summarized here to provide this perspective and to identify useful
strategies that instructors can promote in their online courses”. Hence, Amer (2018)
made mention that online class become a platform of the teachers to overcome the
barrier in front of the learner. After all we are living 21st century whereas the
technology has been improved.
Even before the pandemic starts online learning and modality was already arisen. And
when the world was shaken by the pandemic, online become primary modality in terms
of teaching and learning. And some of the students, found online class as their
convenient in learning because they have easy access to the internet. However, this is
not applicable to all students, some students suffer from different challenges in online
learning modality. Moreover, together in the learning modality in online, students
should develop other competencies even in online. For instance, the speaking
competence of the students should improve as they improve their level of education.
Based on researchgate.net, speaking skills is a huge factor in learning second language,
in speaking skills it is important to know and learn the speaking ability of the learner.
And speaking ability depends on the two parts which are 1. Capability and character of
the learner and 2. Speaker participations. Character of the learner is what are idea and
background of the learner to the target language. Capability is how the learner receive
and treat the idea of the target Language. And in speaker participations is the
relationship of the speaker and the learner. Speaking documented that it able to share
opinion, argument, and intention to the other speaking, hence, speaking has a vital role
in communication, speaking requires audience and listener to receive feedback. And
there are factors that can cause of barrier to the students in oral skills, the anxiety self-
consciousness, anxiety, low inspiration, lack of motivation, poor participation, lack of
engagement, poor speaking exposure, and meddling from the first language as the
learner, and that is according to Zhang (2009). And these factors can still occur or even
worse in the online class, students tend to speak in participation in class, however these
factors affecting the students to speak up, that can causes not improving their speaking
competence.
Speaking is one of the major competences in language learning, and mostly of the
learner are having problems in improving their oral skills since their exposure to the
target Language is minimal. Learning English and becoming fluent in speaking is a must.
Social media is one of the platforms where people can contact their friend, colleague,
and family as well as people can share photos and interested materials, somehow the
technology expanded its function from bare entertainment, it uses now as one of the
primary modalities in learning and teaching, despite of the barrier and complications
such as, small screen, internet connection, and in presenting the presentation. The
different result of face-to-face interaction or teaching versus the in technology
mediated, the student’s effectiveness affected in the technology mediated. In the face-
to-face lecture it, more on teacher dominated approach, with less self-assessment of
the students, while in the online class students allows to give more time in
understanding and explaining the lesson by themselves.
III. Methodology
This chapter presents the methodology that was employed in this study. This includes
research design, research locale, data gathering procedure, instrumentation, and
statistical statement of the study.
A. Research Design
This study utilized the descriptive survey of research method. This was designed to
determine the speaking skill proficiency level of first year BSED English students using
online modality of Ramon Magsaysay memorial colleges. It is descriptive in a sense that
the data obtained are analyzed and comprehend. the Speaking is the main language
skill; however, majority of students and learners in EFL contexts struggle to overcome
their speaking difficulties since their exposure to situations where speaking skill could be
practiced is scarce (Agudo, 2019; Ding, Er, & Orey, 2018). Having recognized the
potential of technology-mediated learning for supporting students’ learning, we
examined how it may influence students’ learning effectiveness and satisfaction, using
online learning as a comparative baseline. Consistent with the analysis provided by Clark
(1994)
The purpose of the study was twofold. First, we examined components of speaking
performances of YLSs at different levels of proficiency to inform construct definitions for
YLS oral performance assessments. We focused on the domain of speaking because, as
noted, oral language is the essence of young learners’ language learning and central to
the language ability of young EFL learners. McKay (2006)
B. Research Local
This study will be conducted at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges, General Santos
City, located at Pioneer Avenue, General Santos City. This intuition in region 12 is the
only one accredited by the PACUCOA (Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities
Commission on Accreditation). This school was established since 1960. At present, is
headed by College President Mr. Kristoffer Franz Mari R. Mill ado, MA and College Vice-
President Mrs. Geraldine Rodriguez, Ph.D. along with the faculty and staff.
C. Key Informants
The participants of this study are BSED English student at Ramon Magsaysay Memorial
Colleges. The selection of the participants is based on who are available and willing to
answer the provided question prepared by the researchers.
Participants Description
Must enrolled BSED English in
BSED English First Year students Ramon Magsaysay Memorial
Colleges
Male or Female
Using online as primary modality for
its learning
D. Instrument
The prime objectives of this study are to identify, define, and discuss the effects (good
or bad) of using online modality in the speaking skill proficiency level of first year BSED
English students of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges. The research shall interview
the respondents in an online platform (preferably Google Docs) whereas the researchers
will provide the document for the questionnaire, and out of the gathered data and the
researchers’ critical scrutiny, the effects of using online modality in the speaking skill
proficiency level of first year BSED English students of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial
Colleges will be discovered and thoroughly identified.
